It ,saw the death of our beloved pontiff, Pope Pius XII and the coronation of another Alter Christus, Pope John XXIII. This span of months also saw the demise of our respected Cardinal Samuel A. Stritch. To take his place, we gave up our own loved Archbishop Albert G. Meyer to lead the people of the Chicago Archdiocese. Recently we welcomed his successor, Archbishop William E. Cousins. And all this came to pass in the year wewere Seniors at St. Mary's. As loyal and faithful Catholics, we dedicate this memory book of our Senior year to those who now serve us in the name of Christ. Monsignor Joseph J. Heim, Pastor of Souls Archbishop William Edward Cousins, Shepherd of Souls Pope John XXIII, Pontiff and Vicar of Christ I O CONTENTS MEET OUR FACULTY ---- Page 3 HERE ARE THE GRADUATES Page 8 AND US AT OUR CLASSES - Page 20 WE HAVE ACTIVITIES, TOO - Page 28 THESE ARE OUR SPORTS - - Page 52 AND NOW OUR FRIENDS - Page 59 THIS IS THE WAY the Seniors of 1959 wish to keep the memories of their last year at Saint Mary's through the years to come. Graduation Day marks the end of an- other phase of your education and the beginning of a new experience in life. For some, it will mean the end of school daysg for others, it will be another step forward in the process of receiving a more complete formal education. For all, graduation from high school is an achieve- ment, which merits our heartfelt congratulations. During your school days at Saint lVlary's you have been guided, in- spired and encouraged by the zealous, dedicated members of the school faculty. Under their tutelage, you have been striving to realize in yourself the true goal of Christian education, as stated so aptly by Pope Pius XI: namely, to think, judge and act constantly and consistently in accordance with right reason, illumined by the supernatural light of the example and teaching of Christf' Please God, you will ever carry this noble ideal into all the future activities of your life. Page Four f4ndSd4z!ez77lcwyWeaamSag4- Just four short years ago, filled with ambition and eager to achieve, you enrolled as freshmen at Saint Mary High School. Day after day, you were guided with untiring zeal in spiritual, scholastic, athletic, and social activities, geared solely to help you form in yourself the ideal of a true Christian. This ideal, once formed, you must use all your powers of mind and soul to realize. That, we hope, you have been taught, is your life work - the only vocation that really counts. You have enjoyed all the blessings of a thorough Christian educa- tion in a Catholic High School. The ideals you have developed and the sound principles of morality you have learned to love, point out to you the path to true happiness and real success. With graduation comes your entrance into a new and strange world - a world that can be cold, indifferent, cruel, and unwilling to understand at times. In it there is only one bright guiding light that will never dim, nor cause you to be misled. Mary, the Mother of God, is your Mother, too. Not only is she concerned about your heavenly destiny, but she is a powerful and perfect advocate as well. Mary has given us a secure blueprint which she asks us to use. Perhaps, most powerful in this world of conflict, is her message at Lourdes and at Fatima. In her wisdom Mary asks us to pattern our lives on these prac- tices - Sacrifice, the Daily Rosary, the Consecration to the Immaculate Heart. Let her play a predominant role in your life. Seek her counsel, trust her, confide in her. Strive through Mary to ascend to Christ, Who through her descended to us. Keep close to Mary, and the God of Battles will place upon your head the victor's crown. Page Five REV. GERALD SCHMITZ REV. RICHARD SCHLENKER St. Mary St. Mary REV. RICHARD NICHOLS REV. RICHARD ALTENIIOFEN St. Thomas Aquinas St. Charles These are our tireless instructors in the science that really counts, the science of Religion. Tireless promoters of all that means the welfare of the students and their achievements, their interest and their zeal has been an unceasing inspiration and a deeply contributing' influence on all of the students in their years at Saint Mary's. Page Six We 1' Uqpi! cpmjfytbihgi fwlgjp i ,jc W Q fw as 1 9' ' Another year has gone by, and as graduation nears we feel more deeply the gratitude we owe our friendly, hard-working lay faculty. Stimulating and resource- fulness mark the labors of Mr. Hoffman, our bandmaster. Sportsmanlike attitudes, whether we win or lose, is the goal of Coach Vander Beke. Always waiting and ready to help in a friendly fashion, all of us know that Mr. Trost is the man with the smile and the cheery word. Quietly but efficiently keeping tab on health, Mrs. New- bury does a splended job the year 'round. MR. DELOS HOFFMAN MR. ROGER TROST Bandmaster Math and Science Teacher MR. EUGENE VANDER BEKE MRS. ALL geared to help the graduate take his place in the quickly changing and ever demanding world of today. Here English 4 students read the loved and lovely Catholic poem - F. Thompson's 'tHound of Heaven. Office Practice with this modern touch and equipment prepares for a profitable career. Monsignor .Heim gets a bit of humorlacross as he begins a Religion lesson with the Seniors. Trigonometry first, then the involving problems of Solid Geometry makes work like this engagingly attractive. Mr. Gene Zarek teaches Ameri- can Government class how to fig- ure their own income tax, and like doing it. Page Twenty-Four Father Altenhofen discusses moral problems with a serious and attentive group of boys. A little bit of this, some more of that, and . , . well, ask the Chemistry class about the result. Junior boys show that American History is the story of a real people throughout its many growing pains and difficulties. This is the Wa f the Juniors Go To School Religion is more detailed - there is some interesting Church History to be learned, more English and, perhaps, other languages, higher mathematics, more science, American and world history, art, mechanical drawing, introduction to business studies, and if you want, a course in clothing. Now we realize a little better, what high school is leading us into, and we make plans and chart our studies so that we will be the best and most loyal examples ot' Christian living. Juniors and Seniors who want a good knowledge of human relations study the currents of World History with Father Schlenker. Not even the photographer could disturb these Junior girls intent on learning the art of shorthand. Page Twenty-Five The question - What is evil? Sounds easy, but try to give a thoughtful and soul-searching correct reply. This is all that was given as a test in Geometry was being written. Know all the answers? English 2 takes time to study the photographic side of literatureg it makes understanding and re- membering so much easier. General Business offers a chance to study and practice on the modern telephone uses as you sec this group enthusiastically doing. Latin II has many inviting passages to be culled and pondered, but vocabulary is still there, too, to test even the best of us. Biology - The study of living things has led these students to spend hours preparing exhibits for the Science Fair which they entered and participated in. Page Twenty-Sin: RELIGION, the prime subject for the Freshmen. ML V- This was a baseball game in Latin I vocabulary. We don't know who won this one, but . . . And before we bake a cake, we learn in Foods class how to read the recipe and follow it. I Z Reading and writing Spanish can prove to be two different things as you may well judge from the lesson going on here. SPEECH, would you believe it? These students are learning when and how to speak, as well as to be good listeners and critics. THIS IS THE WAY of the Sophomores and the Freshmen, Always there is Religion: then there may be English and the languages, mathematics and science, art, home economics, all des- tined to make us men and women of to- morrow! TODAY we are the learners and then so soon it will be TOMORROW, and we must be the doers, and the world expects so much of US. Page Twenty-Scucn With the addition of new equipment, the girls are having a chance to indulge in the newer sports. Here a class of girls out for gym are using the new hockey club to play field hockey. Evidently good raw material for the Navy, this class of boys is practicing the age-old Tug-of- War and from the looks of things is enjoying it. After this we saw them, of all things, jumping rope - another old sport. Page Twenty-Eight RING DAY for the Class of 1959 THIS IS THE WAY Activities .. Activities . Here is the group of personality charmers, who solicited subscriptions, and ads and patrons. To each of these Workers the Stafl IS grateful. Most of the pictures in this book have been produced by the mem- bers of the St. Mary's Camera Club. The club does all the work necessary to bring these pictures up in fine shape. Members strive to make them- selves and others conscious of the many ways in which we are bound to work out our eter- nal destiny under the leadership of our Blessed Mother. Its activities are spiritual, scholastic, and social. Working for better scholarship, the frequent meetings stress the need of application to studies. Spiritually, the Sodality sponsors the Tuesday Commun- ion day, the annual Retreat, the Living Ro- sary, and the May Crowning. Socially, we note the Christmas party and blessing of the Crib, the Snowball, the Mission Party and Dance, and other social events. Tieing all these, and meeting with other Sodalists, St. Mary students participate in the Summer School of Catholic Action in Chicago, and the W.C.A.C. in Milwaukee. Rev.
