Never before have youngsters from six to eighteen had the opportunities offered in present day schools. Wide educational fields from which to choose and mold one's individual abilitiesg opportunities in music and athleticsg experience from school publications and dramatics 1- all these are at their disposal. To everyone is given the chance to de- velop into a well-adjusted, welI-edu- cated individual, his progress barred only by his lack of diligence. Yes, we are fortunate indeed, espe- cially so here at St. Mary where the soul is fortified while the mind is de- veloped. From the religious principles inculcated over the years we learn to distinguish right from wrongg we are prepared to face the problems of life, to deal with them squarely. Thus, we the graduates of i949 go forth from the hallowed halls of our Alma Mater with a faith strong as death, a hope directed toward our eternal goal and a love set afire with zeal for God's cause . . . All for Jesus, through Mary? lt is our one and only endeavor to become more Christ-like and more Mary-like as the years go by. St. Mary, we thank youll 4L..1.,...--..,, u 62:9 Q Q? But our minds were far An unforgettable dav for us all, it marked from such noble thoughts on the morn ot September 5, trial-class day. Then, it was all we could do to hunt out that unfind- able Room 303, or 205. ln the following months, as the excitement gradually toned down, we could be found amid cries of Sum, esse, fui, futurus, x equals 5, and Who's in the morning civics class? But it was all fun, and soon our first high school year had ended. After three months of sunshine, we returned to our books as experienced Sophomores. There was little time for idle musing when so many things had to be learned. Back we went to Latin, English, and Religion. This was the year of our introduction to Biology and Geometry, those interesting fields which we were sometimes certain we would never understand. As if these were not enough, we found ourselves carry- ing extra-curricular activities, such as band. chorus, and sports. The year was filled with inspiring Sodality meetings, rousing pep sessions, a quiet, reflective retreat, movies, vocation-week speakers, and so work, spiced with good fun. As Juniors, we found ourselves on a dignified pedestal, or so we thought. We seemed to like the idea of being only one step away from the lofty position of Senior. We entered fields of our choice, such as science, commercial, or language. All of this balanced with social activities, includ- ing strenuous participation at games Cre- gardless of physical positionl, and the ex- citing preparation for and enjoyment of the Junior Prom. Again, whole-hearted support and good humor lightened the work. Our Senior days ticked by quicker than we would have liked. Over us all there seemed to hover the spirit of This is the last year - let's make it good. To our regular schedule of studies came the Renard jobs and the class playg we accepted them ener- getically, realizing that it would be the last time. We worked hard, not only at books, but also, at making more permanent the friendships we had formed through four years. We stored away innumerable mem- ories for future reminiscing. Now, as grad- uation looms ahead, we must look back and admit, Yes, these were the best years of our lives. Because we do not like to brag, we shall merely remark now, casually, that Ronnie Bull Rankin used his physical structure in athletics with Paul Zelinski marching along in the old Zelinski way, that Donna Mottel, Sis and Cathy Mayefski could lead more than the band, that Lee Murphy will soon compete with Louie Armstrong, that our basketball team dressed up in those blue and white suits gave Coach LeRoy ideas, especially after the Central B game, that Kathleen Le Bouton and Mary Ann Riese deserved all the A's they received during the yearg that we have bushels of raw material and some parcels of in- telligence. This stirring summons of our Holy Father could not help but find a generous response from St. Mary Sodalists be- cause they are aware that the Church has never been so ravaged, so hated, so attacked as now. As a consequence, Action is the keynote of the reorgan- ized Sodality this year. Action, yes, - but directed, guided action has been the prime considera- tion in establishing our new sodal- ity on solid ground. Realizing that first things come first, emphasis has been placed on the development of the in- ner life through frequent and daily at- tendance at Holy Mass, the daily re- ception of Holy Communion, and the promotion of more devotion to Mary, particularly the recitation of the Rosary. Reverting again to the communica- tion of Pope Pius Xll to Father Lord: No age more than the present has needed Catholic Youth moulded in the generous spirit of the Sodality of Our Lady to protect the interests of Christ and His Church in the home, in the school . . . but . . . let care be taken that each Sodality be securely founded and exactly developed accord- ing to the approved rules of the Sodal- ity. Only thus may the members hope to fulfill their task in the Sacred Apos- tolate assigned to them by Holy Mother Church. Accordingly, an earnest effort has been made by the Sodalists to live in conformity with Sodality Rules, this entails no little effort. The faithful attendance at meetings twice a month on Sunday afternoons provided more than enough opportunity for Sodalists to prove their worth. Perhaps even greater proof was given in the quiet but steady efforts made to be chari- table, to become more prayerful, to be Marian-centered and Christ-minded. The various mission projects have all been backed lOOfHn and carried through to a successful conclusion. We like to think, however, that when we contributed this year to the Old Clothes Drive: when we responded to the plea of lndian children for a Christmas remembrance, when we contributed to the campaign for medi- cal suppliesl and when we conscien- tiously saved stamps for the mission, we were particularly mindful of the fact that When you give to these, the least of my brethren, you give to Me. Surely this external activity is a manifestation of the internal develop- ment of a vigorous spiritual life. Rev. Joseph A. Becker, Sodality Director ltr'-W Sodality officers planning various projects Sodality members collected medical supplies for the missions. E S X , 7 I L n K Ag Q 2 V 4 1 JZ 4 5, A -A fi? Lack of fight and blocking, cost the Zephyrs their first conference set-back. St. Mary 34 Springs flfond du Lacl O The Zephyrs opened their conference sea- son with a decisive victory over St. Mary Springs of Fond du Lac. Playing their first year in the conference, the Fond du Lac eleven were not able to stop their more experienced opponents, The victory, however, proved costly to the Zephyrs, for Bert Preimesberger, left halfback received a serious back injury. Reserves played the greater part of the game as the Zephyrs took an early lead and kept it. St. Mary O St. John Military CDelafieldl 6 Although the opposition was the strongest that appeared in Menasha for many years, the Zephyrs gave a remarkable exhibition of foot- ball. But the Cadets capitalized on the breaks, and the Zephyrs fell in defeat by a one touch- down margin. St. Mary 6 St. Norbert's lDePerel 34 Next, the Zephyrs travelled to DePere. Here they took one of their worst shellackings , of the season, at the hands of the Green Knights. The Zephyrs played against much greater odds and managed to score a last quarter touchdown. Several times they threat- ened the Knights during this unevenly matched game. St. Mary showed her aggressiveness and sportsmanship throughout the entire game. Another victory was slated for us. Page 62 St Mary 7 Lourdes lMarinettel 6 Coming from behind in the last few minutes of the game the Zephyrs showed they had not lost their fight and spirit They scored a touch down and Bert Preimesberger s educated toe sent the ball through the uprights to give us our second conference win St. Mary l3 Campion lPrairie du Chien? 41 Two hundred milesl On to Campion! At Prairie du Chien ,the Zephyrs received a ter- rible setback in their last encounter of the sason, to the heavier and stronger opponents. Tom Maney, Gerry Birhng, Jim Moissem D PERSONALS Gerald lButtsl Birling- Butts backed up our line on defense and held down the left guard post on offense. Jerry always had the necessary spark for a football player, never giving up till the final gun. Manager Dick lskoosei Ciske--This young man's work started before the game, lasted dur- ing the game, and after the game. He was very reliable in his assigned duty. We counted upon him as the unsung hero of the grid iron. LaVaughn lButchl Gehring - Butch was a small lad for the fullback spot, but size made no difference to him. Opponents respected Butch for his drive and fury. Butch was our Mr, Inside. John lBasill Le Comte - John was one of the bigger men on our squad. He could always be counted on as a 48 minute player. ln the Little Chute game when John was out with an injury. the front line was seriously weakened and was one of the greater reasons for our downfall. Jerold fChick7 Lotzer-Chick was l4O lbs. of blocking and tackling dynamite. He played quarterback but also filled in at halfback. Chick went through the whole season without an injury, a remarkable thing for a boy of his size. Ambrose fLeftyl Magalski - Although his major interest is baseball, Amby did exception- ally well on the gridiron. Amby was our center with the ability to 'hike the ball back like Bulldog Turner. By the boys of the team, Amby was known as the jokesster. Dennis lMandyD Manderfield - Dennis held down the right end position. Mandy played most- ly on defense and occasionally on offense. When we met St. Norbert's we had a family affair on the field for Dennis was playing against his brother Moose Manderfield. Glen Moder-Glen was our regular right end, he was a rugged man on defense. But to top it all off, Glen added a little color to our games with his circus catches especially that one against Lourdes. Page 63 YY PERSONALS Jerry Birling John Le Comte Tom Otto Tom llshkei Otto - The smallest man on our first strin , Tom did an all around good job g . lshke only weighed l5O lbs., but he might just as well have weighed 250. The boys will never forget how much Tom got hurt. Robert lBertJ Preimesberger- He was our regular left halfback, a superb runner and an excellent kicker. His toe added many a point, after a touchdown. During the course of the season, Bert received a back injury that would have finished an ordinary boy, but after some days, Bert was going Strong. Robert Schipferling- Bob carried the mail from our right halfback spot. He gave us the most spectacular run of the year with his 87 yard gallop against Springs , Bob was badly in- jured in the St. Norbert's game and had to be removed from the starting eleven, weakening our team considerably. Jerome lSchmiddy7 Schmidt - Jerry was at the quarterback position, always a hard spot to fill in. Jerry did a great job. When there was only a few yards to be gained, Schmiddy was always game to call the qaurterback sneak. Jim lPercyD Vogel - Our starting left end had a little bad luck in the beginning of the year with his favorite end around play. He played many games under the serious handicap of a broken finger. Page 64 'x Jerry Schmidt Dear old St. Mary's we're true to you Our Alma Mater, to you is due Our loyalty and love: Vife ask choice blessings from above. MARY 32 KIMBERLY 29 The Zephyrs opened their '48-'49 basketball season with a well-earned victory over the Kimberly Paper- makers . The game was played at Menasha High before a full house. ST. MARY 54 ST. MARY SPRINGS, Fond du Lac 29 The opening conference game for St. Mary resulted in a smashing victory over the Academy five. From the opening whistle the Zephyrs had the game well cinched. ST. MARY 33 CAMPION, Prairie du Chien 34 lovertimel It was a hard fought battle on the banks of the Mississippi, and at the end of the regular four periods, the scare was deadlocked at 32-32. In the final seconds of the overtime the Zephyrs were edged out by a costly free throw. ST. MARY 59 ST. MARY SPRINGS, Fond du Lac 40 Again the Zephyrs tipped the Academy five by a con- siderable margin to make it two straight in conference play for the team. It was a revengeful victory after the heartbreaking loss to Campion. ST. MARY 28 ST. JOHN MILITARY ACADEMY 37 The Zephyrs were literally bombarded by the mili- tary quintet. The team just couIdn't seem to hit on their numerous shots and the result was defeat. ST. MARY 40 NORBERT'S 42 This was a stunning conference loss for the defending champs. Again it seemed like a strange court was a jinx to the team. The Zephyrs battled the Squires down the wire, but again in the final seconds were edged out. ST. MARY 53 PIUS Xl MILWAUKEE 45 In a double header at Green Bay the Zephyrs piled up a big score against the Big City Boys. It was in the 3rd and 4th quarters that the boys started to pull away. ST. MARY 28 NOTRE DAME, MILWAUKEE 33 In a game against the Milwaukee conference leaders the Zephyrs did a great job. lf there had been little more luck on the Zephyr side the score would have been re- versed. 68 ST. MARY 6I LOURDES, MARINETTE 41 Piling up the biggest score in the conference the Zephyrs overwhelmed the Lourdes team from upstate. The team applied a fast break which was very effective on the scoreboard. ST. MARY 46 ALUMNI39 In a game well appreciated by the fans the Zeph's overcame their old classmates. With such stars as Johnson, and Trish in their lineup, the Alumni gave the team quite a battle. A ST. MARY 40 CENTRAL CATHOLIC, GREEN BAY 36 In a see-saw battle the Zephyrs pushed the Bays into the defeated ranks of the Catholic confrence. This placed the conference in a three way tie for first. ST. MARY 39 KIMBERLY 50 In their worst defeat of the year St. Mary fell to the clubbing handed them by Kimberly. This tilt evened things up for the two schools, for the Zephyrs beat Kim- berly in earlier games. ST. MARY 57 MARYHEART, PITTSVILLE 32 The Zephyr reserves played the larger part of this game, doing a creditable job. They rolled the score up to 57 points and gained valuable experience for the com- ing year. ST. MARY 54 CAMPION, PRAIRIE DU CHIEN 44 The 'Zephyrs were out for revenge because of an earlier defeat. That one point mant a great deal. The Zephyrs rolled over the Jesuit school team. It was a fine exhibition of teamwork and smart basketball by the Zephyrs squad. ST. MARY CENTRAL, GREEN BAY In the final conference game, the Zephyrs dropped their chance for the Catholic Conference Champs. The team trailed all through the game, and no power on earth could change conditions, Therefore, the Zephyrs had to bow in defeat and acknowledge the Central Bays the victorious Champs of the Conference. ST. MARY 36 MARQUETTE IMILWAUKEEJ The Zephyrs had to meet a mighty opponent on the opening day of the Catholic State Tournament and sad to say, they were bumped out of the championship pic- ture by the Milwaukeeans. Thus endeth the story of the St. Mary basketball season. -Q ,.. .qxvf g vv+Ni.nQw A ,mmwwn . 'WIC Lal k Xa 1. Tennis Record The Record for the season ot the l948 team was l9 wins, and O losses. Team's record for straight wins now stand at 24. This equals the state record set by Neenah High two years ago. Should this years' team open with a win they will then have broken the state record. The team traveled over tive thousand miles which is the greatest record of any team in the United States. As a group these tive have won 33 and lost l match during a period of 2 years while playing for St. Mary's. Senior, Don Curtis, won all his single matches, totalling l9 in the l948 season. Junior, Jerry Schmidt won l8 and lost but one single match in the i948 season. The Curtis brothers as a doubles team lost but one match. The Yaley and Schmidt combination also lost one match in the season. Page 70 Tennis During Easter week, March 28 to April 9, the St. Mary Zephyr Net Squad made a trip to Washington, D. C. as a Wisconsin State Centennial Celebration feature. Traveling with Coach Hugh Strange were Captain Tom Yaley, Donald Curtis, Captain-elect Jerry Schmidt, Richard Curtis, and Eugene Hanson. On the eastern trip the team played two official matches with Woodberry Forest School at Orange, Virginia. The Zephyr netters won 5 to 2. They also played La Salle High School of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and this, too, w-as a victory of 5-O. At the United States Naval Academy the Team played an unofficial match against the Navy varsity which the final score was 9-2 in favor of Navy, lt was here that Tom Yaley scored his outstanding win of the season when he defeated Mike Vogel, the number one player of the Middies in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. ln June after school closed, the team again returned East, this time to the campus of the University of Virginia. Over their impressive record for the season, the Zephyr Netters had been invited to play in the National lnter-scholastic Tennis Championship. This tourna- ment was made up of the finest high school and prep school players in the United States. Tom Yaley and Don Curtis playing in their first doubles tournament as a team, managed to reach the quarter finals. As a result they were ranked as the seventh team in the United States for the year l9-18. They were defeated in a very close match which lasted over two hours. ln the singles Jerry Schmidt lost out in the second round after a three hour match at a temper- ature of 955' in the shade.
