The sunniest Sunday in sunny May was chosen for this procession in honor of our Blessed Lady. Glory Mae Laux, Sodality Prefect, was the bride who ascended Marys throne and encircled her head with the crown of garlands. Her court was made up of the Sodality officers. The whole high and grade school together, in this final honor to Mary, wove a picture of color and homage that must have been very pleasing to the Queen of Queens. EQ' Page 38 ag. IIEIIRT HOLY KIMBERLY S12 MARY FOOTBALL SQUAD Champions of the Fox River Valley Catholic Conference for the third consecutive year, the St. Mary football squad claims final ownership of the traveling trophy. We split a six game season, putting on the permanent records three defeats that are anything but a disgrace! Father Becker said that the spirit displayed at the Two Rivers game recalled a nick-name that was given the Zephyr team soon after it was organized. Giant Killers was the appellation used because they fought, win or lose, or draw, far beyond their capabilities as rndicated by their size. I'm sure that any and all spectators who saw this year's team in action would agree they deserve this very same nickfname. Hit by one of the breaks that are all a part of the game the team was a victim of several telling injuries this year. Veterans Sambo Verbrick and Bill Ciske were both laid up early in the season, while other promising underclassf men were also claimed by the injury jinx. The individual scores of each game are as follows: St. Mary 7 St. Mary I2 St. Mary zo St. Mary I3 St. Mary IQ St. Mary 31 Appleton I3 Neenah I3 St. Norbert 7 Two Rivers 24 Central 7 St. john o Hard continual practice under the expert guidance of Coach Trish showed up in a team that handled itself well. Particularly in the backfield where injuries necessitated a shifting of combination. Smoothness due to expert coach' ing was displayed at every game. The result was that the Zephyrs stood up to any high school team and gained credit as a wellfdisciplined organization. This has been proved in the past when schools with much larger enrollments have become our victims. Page 43 Bill Sladlcl' Bob Wcssenbcrg . Bob Wesseiiberg '-- 'iWessy was one of the co' captains of the 1944 squad. He played end and held down his position very capably. Besides being an excellent pass catcher and runner, Bob also leads his team in scoring . . . .Bill Zelinskef Zel's position was right halfback. He was a light back, but showed his opponents that size doesn't mean everything by doing some fancy running and cutting off long gains. Bill proved to be of great value to the team . . . . Bill Stadler+Bill is a husky lad who played tackle last year but was shifted to guard this season. He was a hard blocker and tackler, and handled his new position admirably . . . . Dick LoeschereDick was another husky guard who played the game well. He did a good job of tackling and blocking for his ball carrier. He was a vital cog in this year's linefup . . . . Ed Zimmerelid didn't get a taste of the big games but he was always working hard and supplied the varsity with plenty of opposition during scrimmage Page 44 Tom Schipfcrling Norman Sanders practice. Ed was a little guy with a big supply of spunk . . . Robert Bushman- Bush a tough little guard who didn't see a lot of action in the games, but on the practice Held showed plenty of stiff competition. Bob played in his Junior and Senior years, earning a letter in his last year . . . Robert Verbrick- Sambo started at end in his Soph and Junior years, but because of a serious injury early in the season was unable to play this year. This accident started a series of fullback inf juries which extended throughout the season . . . David Stratton- Dave was always an offensive threat and an excellent defensive player. He always seemed to be where the defense wasn't on passes, and in this way accounted for several touchdowns . . . Thomas Schipferling f Tom as the Senior Co' captain of the 1944 squad set a Hne example for the rest of the boys by hard work ar practice and keep' ing in training During the games he showed excellent ability in running, passing and kicking. HIGHLIGHTS: Out ofa 25 game schedule, which included many of the strongest prep teams in the state, our boys won 21 games, with only 4 going to the opposition. Cut twin victories over a strong Campion team and our 33 to 24 triumph over a highly regarded Neenah team on the Rockets own court, are the pride and joy of all St. Mairy fans. The new individual scoring record of gii points was set by Senior Bob Wessenberg, who climaxed his last season by being selected, for the second year, as the center on the Mythiciil allfstate tournament team at St. Norbert College. Bob Sambo Verbrick, Torchy Clark and Donny Criesbach also passed the loo point mark in the scoring column for the season. Our 41f4o victory over Messmer High of Iviilwaukee for 3rd place honors at the St. Norbert tourney after we bowed to the champion Edgewood team in the semifiinal round, gave us the beautiful Dr. Lenz trophy and gold basketballs for each ofthe boys on the tournament team. Richard Loescher was invested with the Eagle scout rank- the highest possible honor awardwwhen the Sea Scouts of the Good Ship Heron recently held their bridge of honor. This meet' ing was held in connection with observance of National Boy Scout week marking Scout movement in New York City. About 90 scouts, parents, friends and visiting ofhcials were present. Mr. Friend, W. H. Bethke, president of the Appleton Council, and Chris Larson, Appleton scout commissioner attended and were taken aboard the mythical land ship during the exercises. In a very solemn ceremony Dick was raised to this highest attainable rank in scouting and Mrs. S. Loescher had the singular honor of pinning the Eagle award on her son's uniform.
