MARIETTA Whene'er I see 8 stretching hue of blue on summer day, I fancy it the sky of Marietta land where slow Muskingum Flows. Here once the ancient Indians trod the Sacred Way, Or oft disturbed the quiet hills with festive beat of drum, Where macabre figures whirling leaped and ritual fires glowed. Now all are gone, only their mounded dead give testament To the heartache and sweet love in the redman's breast of old. Oh, could the green-leafed elms but speak a plainer sentiment Than the whispering winds o'er head, what a song they'd sing! Yet it is easy to imagine in such a land as this An Indian maid waiting where the sun-flecked waters bring Her sweetheart brave with paddle deeply dipped for eager trystg Or some warrior scarred in woodland fight nursing his wounds in the noonday sun, Turning his eye in slow pursuit of a lazy Sparrow hawk, Now amused with the village children who stalk the bear in their fun, Half listening to the women's praise as they skin his beast and their talk . And so in that mystic atmosphere of chaste enchantments All things viewed seem somehow richer in the sun's daylight: Yet when the circling shadows of the eve close the airy casements, I call by name the selfsame fires that had elsewhere charmed my sight, The rolling earth and plain is one under the starry night.

DEDICATIO 1 On November 23, 1955, the honor of Protonotary Apostolic was bestowed on our pastor and principal. In recognition of this honor, and in an attempt to express our gratitude for the interest he has given us, we, the Senior Class of 1956, wish to dedicate to him our volume of the Marian. As years go by we shall always look back and remember the outstanding figure of our school days, and shall eternally thank God for giving to us -- Monsignor Edwin F. Murphy.
