Here once the ancient Indians trod the Sacred Way, Or oft disturbed the quiet hills with festive beat of drum, Where macabre figures whirling leaped and ritual fires glowed. Now all are gone, only their mounded dead give testament To the heartache and sweet love in the redman's breast of old. Oh, could the green-leafed elms but speak a plainer sentiment Than the whispering winds o'er head, what a song they'd sing! Yet it is easy to imagine in such a land as this An Indian maid waiting where the sun-flecked waters bring Her sweetheart brave with paddle deeply dipped for eager trystg Or some warrior scarred in woodland fight nursing his wounds in the noonday sun, Turning his eye in slow pursuit of a lazy Sparrow hawk, Now amused with the village children who stalk the bear in their fun, Half listening to the women's praise as they skin his beast and their talk . And so in that mystic atmosphere of chaste enchantments All things viewed seem somehow richer in the sun's daylight: Yet when the circling shadows of the eve close the airy casements, I call by name the selfsame fires that had elsewhere charmed my sight, The rolling earth and plain is one under the starry night. 'Nw DEDICATIO 1 On November 23, 1955, the honor of Protonotary Apostolic was bestowed on our pastor and principal. In recognition of this honor, and in an attempt to express our gratitude for the interest he has given us, we, the Senior Class of 1956, wish to dedicate to him our volume of the Marian. As years go by we shall always look back and remember the outstanding figure of our school days, and shall eternally thank God for giving to us -- Monsignor Edwin F. Murphy. February 18, 1956 Dear Mary Margaret, Yesterday you were one of us. You sat with us in the classroom. You helped us with our homework. You worried a little, perhaps, over your own. You snitched a snack between periods. You jitter-bugged during noon hour. You posed reluctantly for a last-minute candid shot for the yearbook. Then you worked late -- a little feverishly, perhaps, in an effort to finish the writing, the pasting, the proof-reading of the book you were never to see through the press -- the book of which you were such an integraland vital part. ' Yes, yesterday you were one of us -- studying, laughing, planning an exciting weekend. But God had other plans for you, about which neither you nor we hadihe least notion. Your death is not the tragedy it seemed at first to be. By it, you have shown all who knew you that you had learned well the lesson of life -- the most im- portant lesson of all -- that one dies as one lives. You lived the life of a modern girl in an exhilarating happy way, working hard when it was time to work, playing hard when it was time to play, but always working and playing according to God's will. And so, as the angel of death descended from heaven to meet you on a Marietta highway he found you prepared to go with him to God. The fact that you had fast- ed from midnight in order to receive Holy Communion this morning has been the one shining comfort to all who mourn your loss -- the comfort that can come only to those whose heavy hearts are lightened by the glowing fire of faith in a loving God Who knows what is best for each of His children. Goodbye, Mary Margaret. May we be as well prepared as you to accept the invitation to heavenly glory when it comes to each one of us. Our home-room teacher was Sister Mary Nora, and the rest of the faculty included Sister Sebastian, Sister Gemma, and Father Adams. Our first big day was initia- tion. we were all fearful of what our Never lovingw seniors would do to us on Judgment Night, but we all pulled through and were really made to feel at home in high school. we elected Bill Albrecht, Fred Scharff, Irene Walter, and Marlene Dimmerling as class officers. Our first big affair was a nMilitary Dancen in the Church hall, and everyone had a grand time. The year came to a close with our class picnic at Lake Hope. we were sophomores before we knew it! This year Regina Strahler and Howard Danielson joined our class. we lost one member, Larry Gazlay, leav- ing our number at twenty. Our home-room teacher was still Sister Mary Nora. The only new member of the faculty was Father Battocletti, who took Father Adams' place as religion instructor. Our class officers for the year were Martha Dyar, David Conley, Irene Walter, and John Moening. The Bishop's Ball, the basketball games, and the graduation breakfast we gave the sen- iors all helped to make this a wonderful year. We had had so much fun at Lake Hope last year that we decided to go there again for our class picnic. we were sorry to see our sophomore year end, and were locking forward to our junior year when we would get our class rings and go to Washington. As juniors we walked into a sparkling new school that first day in Sep- tember. How proud we are of it! we have never ceased to marvel at the spa- cious halls and the beautiful classrooms. The faculty for this year in- cluded our home-room teacher, Sister Sebastian, Sister Gemma, Sister Rose Clement, Father Battocletti, and Father Kramer. we chose Irene Walter, Marlene Dimmerling, Sharon LaVallee, and Marguerite Huck as class officers for the year. The members of our class still numbered twenty. Our class rings arrived around the first of December. We'll probably never stop showing them off. The year passed quickly with all the activities, and it wasn't any time at all until we were on our way to Washington for a glorious five-day trip which we shall never forget. Nor will we ever forget that Monsignor Murphy made the trip possible. The year ended in a flurry of pre- parations for our last year in high school. Seniors! You may wonder how we ever made it, but here we are at last. We began the year full of zest and vigor. We were determined to make the most of OUT l8St days ih high school. we Wglcomed Our new h0me-r00m teach- er, Sister Mary Leah, and two other new members to the faculty, Sister Veronica and Father Wenda. Bob Kern deserted our ranks to start his television career. The freshman initiation was our first project. we elected John Moening, Pat Tobin, Sharon LaVallee, and John Davis class of- ficers. About the second month after school had started, we undertook the task of editing the yearbook. we hope you like it! The Bishop's Ball, the basketball SHYYIGS and the Valentine Dance are already over, and we are look - ing forward to the time when this issue of the MARIAN will be out. We are also awaiting the outcome of the tournament and all the graduation activiti- es . And last, but not least, we are waiting for the moment when we will be walking down the aisle to receive our diplomas. we pause now to thank all our teachers for all they have done for us and to tell them how much we app- rgciated them' We will always think of St. Mary's with fond memories and will look back to these never-to-be-forgotten days with gratitude and affec- tion for all those who made them what they have been -- the happy carefree days of our youth. ., ffsmwsemwsxwgkw ,WS I A In wt K ' Lf? ::' 9, fr Q, ry, ,., ,Simi Nm- 1 Y .,.,.z. .i. . mf , .,,, L. f ,, L, Oy.
