DEDICATION In 1945 the Christopher movement was founded by Father james Keller, M, M. lts purpose is to encourage millions of individuals to show a personal responsibility in bringing the love and truth of Christ to the mainstream of life. We, the Seniors of Saint Mary Academy, wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Diocesan Priests, the Franciscan Sisters of Oldenburg and the lay members of our faculty for their understanding guidance and encouraging Christopher example. Upon our return to school in September we found new faces and new names on the faculty, among them our principal, Sister Marie. Although Sister Marie has spent only one year with us, she has gained our admiration and trust. Through her sincere interest and assistance in our endeavors, Sister is recognized not only as the administrator of our school but as a personal friend to each student. To Sister Marie, to those who assist her on the faculty, and to all our teachers of the past four years, we are deeply indebted. If we succeed in making the world just a little better, it is because they have shown us the way. change interests or relate humorous episodes Left to Rzgbl Barbara Amato Mary Toney Beverly Nelson Sister Marie O S F , and Rose Gordon 7 Informal meetings with Sister Marie give students the chance to discuss problems, ex 7 I , A I V I' , , , , . . . . ,.M 'P'-5 r- :sway . hi . ,Q . HARD WORK . . . has no substitute if you wish to achieve the fullness of education. A complete education includes intel- lectual. cultural and spiritual training to which each of you has a God-given right. Purpose makes the difference. You are motivated by a love of God and your fellowmen to be zealous. to put forth unceasing effort in your studies. No matter what your limitations are, your noble purpose and your deep and satisfying conviction that, by Gods grace, you can be an instrument in bringing Him to men and men to Him will lead you on to greater heights. Realize that within each of you there are great potentialities-a growing resourcefulness and alertness, a keen- ness of observation, and a capacity for work which might remain dormant unless you do something about it, As Christophers of the Classroom your work is important. The opport- unity is yours to bring Christ's love and Christ's truth to fellow students who do not possess them. So much depends on you young people, you students. A large share of the fate of the world hangs on what you do now in these years of preparation and on what you will be doing in the future. Seriously consider the fact that you are playing a vital role in shaping the des- tiny of the world through your . . . CLASSES No daydreaming in junior religion class as all focus attention on Father Reidy, Artistic freshmen, Barbara Cmehil and Pamela Steatl, compliment Lu- ann Zimmer on her exquisite drawing of the liturgical cycle. The sparkle in Father Elford's eyes indicates that another hypo- thetical case has been presented by his senior religion class. 'IO l I RELIGION There is no true education which does not prepare man for what he must be and for what he must do to attain his last end. Religion is not just another subject in our curriculum-it is the basis and reason for studying all other subjects. The result of a religion course should be evident in daily high-school life, reflecting itself in the students' realization of the importance of the spiritual over the material. At Saint Mary Academy the study of our Catholic religion is our preparation for a sound. Christian life. Group guidance has a definite place in the freshman classes. One class each week is devoted to thinking over topics prepared by students. The topics are then developed by members of the class, and finally their convictions are put into action. By talking over school life, education, personality. vocational planning, family life and social life. the freshmen gradually acquire zest and enthusiasm for the life and activity which con- stitute the real spirit of St. Mary's. In the sophomore, junior and senior classes, the vital importance of discussion, an essential part of ed- ucation, is not overlooked. Wfe students of St. Mary's are encouraged to think about. discuss, absorb and act on the matter presented in the frequent discussions of the religion classes, Applying the principles instilled, we discover that way of life which makes us good citizens and better Christians. As citizens of two worlds, we are preparing for both. 1 Two contestants seek a final check on their essays befflfe fYPiUll them. Deeper appreciation of good literature, as- signments to broaden knowledge and pro- fitable leisure-time reading are also given special consideration. Under the guidance of our English teachers, literary talent is de- veloped slowly but surely. Wlith constant encouragement and helpful suggestions many students have improved their writing ability and have earned recognition in national essay and poetry contests. The journalism class provides opportunities for those who have a flair for writing. It is a thrill for them to see their own words in print in our school pub- lications and in local papers. Use of the school library is encouraged in all classes, especially in our English classes. BUSINESS The business field offers numerous op- portunities for pleasant work and advance- ment. Many students realize that a knowledge of typing. shorthand office practice and book- keeping will make their future more secure. Practical demonstrations of machines by local companies added to the general know- ledge and experience of the business students, while certificates of merit were earned by those attaining the required speed and accuracy in typing and shorthand. Industrious students diligently practice shorthand outlines. Barbara Hammond receives some excellent tips on the duplicating process from Sister Mary Xavier in office practice class. Sister Mary assures Shirley Moran that her books will balance if she makes one minor adjustment. Mr. Thomas Hacker takes classroom inventory before giving a timed writing. Living in the spirit of St. Francis teaches Third Order members that real comes with living a life of moderation and striving to give good example. Last summer five Tertiaries attended the Third Order Youth Congress in Olean, New York. Sheila Shine. Cecilia Stevens and Suzette Glenn delivered speeches on the topic, XY'hat Youth Can Do To Sanctify the Sunday -for God, for the family, and in recreation. In November, 1958, Sister Emmanuel, Moderator of Third Order, notified the girls that their speeches had been published in the Franciscan Herald and Forum. 'l' The main objective of the members of the Young Christian Student Movement is to take a progressive step toward helping themselves and other teenagers live a more Christlike life. The aim of Y. C. S. is to create in the high school student a respect for learn- ing that will blossom into enlightened Chris- tian leadership. The members study particular teenage problems, decide what action is tO be taken, and then devote all their energy toward effecting a change. Wfeekly meetings are conducted by Thelma Bishop, president, Mary Hermann, secretary, Barbara Hill, treas- urerg and Nancy McCracken, co-ordinator. Sister jean Gabriel as moderator suggests pro- jects and activities for both Y. C. S. and the Sodality. Copy work progressed while the art staff sketched possible layouts and combined original ideas and suggestions. Photographers were kept busy taking snapshots of the latest happenings. XY'orking together during the year made the staff members realize the importance of teamwork. Creating a lasting contri- bution to their alma mater became the one aim of this years VISTAS staff. It is our sincere wish that the contents of the 1959 VISTAS will enrich your life as it has ours. At each meeting the members were expected to contribute some helpful hints to facilitate good picture taking. The test of learning in photography is resultsg each month members of the club displayed their recent efforts and welcomed suggestions from fellow members. In this way the am- ateur photographers learned to recognize errors and improve the quality of their snap- shots. SPANISH CLUB. Members of the Spanish Club, organized this year, named their month- ly publication La Estrellitaf' Articles were written by students in the Spanish class, and members of the club compiled them for the paper. In addition to writing, traditions and customs of Spanish-speaking people were discussed at club meetings with Sister Benira, Moderator. MATH CLUB. Sister jean Gabriel assures her students that the purpose of the Math Club is to show that mathematics can be fun. Each week Sister had new puzzles and games to prove her point. At one meeting these young mathematicians found that there if such a thing as a one-sided surface. See if you can figure out this one: A mathematician confided That a Moebius band is one-sided And you'll get quite a laugh If you cut it in half, For it stays in one piece when divided. LEGION OF DECENCY. This organization is part of the national movement to promote patronage of good movies only. Movie-goers are aided by the notices circulated throughout the city by the legion workers. Patricia Tietz, chairman, hands the recent listing of local movies to co-chairman Rita Davis. Marilyn Gazvoda, Betty Tolly and Evelyn Carrico, contact managers, are responsible for obtaining the list of current movies from the theater houses. Notices are sent each week to the various Catholic schools, and movie ratings are filed for future reference. PEP CLUB. Three cheers for the gold and blue! Nancy Dezelan, Barbara Hill and Kathy Mobley lead the Pep Club in backing the fighting Irish from Cathedral High School. At each football and basketball game the pepsters unite in cheers and songs to spur the players on to victory. RED CROSS. Under the direction of Sister Marita members of the American junior Red Cross worked vigorously on a number of projects in accordance with the aims of the Red Cross- for country and for humanity. At Christmas, activities in- cluded the making of Christmas stockings, tray favors, calendar pads, joke books and yuletide decorations for the less fortunate. Gifts were distributed to the patients at Veterans Hospital, child- ren at General Hospital and old folks cared for by the Little Sisters of the Poor. Later in the year an exhibit kit of papers and pictures of U.S. teens and their activities was prepared for better foreign relations among students. 'Qu- .,-f v . 1 L... 1' WE THANK OUR . . . patrons and advertisers for helping us bring to a darkened world the light of Christian principles. In the rush of modern life. there is a tendency to leave God Himself out of the running of His own world, Involved with incidentals, men some- times overlook what is essential for the very foundation of society. The role of the Christopher is a simple one. He goes into the market- place, into a job of his own choosing, without fanfare or flag waving, with- out doing anything sensational. His simple task is to insist on truth where others are intent on furthering false- hood, to establish order where others are spreading confusion. You can start in your home. school. office or farm and reach from there to the world.
