As he sees it, the desire is awakened within him to twist, knead, pinch and smooth the surface of that substance until it appears as a work of art. What more flexible material is offered to parental sculptors than the soul of a daughter entrusted to theml Through the pages of our yearbook, we will show how our parents and those delegated by them have attemped the creation of a masterpiece. Time and circumstances will tell if its value is temporal or eternal. lt has been slow, tedious work, but any sculptor knows that to produce a masterpiece it must be thus. Our sculptors used the tools effectively and efficiently. The finished work reveals the touch and method of the artistic fingers that did the modeling. Character that has been formed in the shadow of the Cross of Christ and under the mantle of Mary, His Mother, must express the beauty and dignity of Christian living. A living so dynamically Christian that it will bring forth a new age that encourages the social, industrial, and scientific achievements to lead all people toward a human happiness that culminates in eternal love of God. CAROL KRAMER, Editor N1 Q M f ..Lf my X NW! GI' Fl Km-1. D Within the family circle the molding of our Christian personality for democratic living was begun by our mothers and fathers - our first teachers, our first counselors, our first spiritual directors. As an ex- pression of our love and appreciation for their unstinting sacrifices and selflessness we affec- tionately dedicate the 1956 VISTAS to our parents. Mr. John J. Roach, president of the Fa- thers' Club, selected a SMAer for his Iife's partner. His daughters, Marilyn Margaret, and Car- olyn complete the circle. Zore fzomz'lePenafSd4ta7fl.Zdeaz To the Seniors of '56 - lt is with a deep sense of joy that we, your faculty, i endorse the dedication of this l956 VISTAS to your parents. We join in thanking your good fathers and mothers for their enthusiastic, whole-hearted, loyal support of our scholastic, spiritual, and social program lt has been a privilege to collaborate with them for four years in the training of your minds and hearts, for we believe that the work of education, both in the home and the school, is as near to that of creation as anything can be. While it is true that we cannot make something out of nothing, we can help you to make the most of your lives. It was not an empty urge that prompted your parents to send you to a Catholic high school, nor was it merely a following of the crowd that brought you here. Rather, it was the beneficent Hand of Providence that guided you personally into our sphere of influence. In accepting you, we accepted a grave responsibility. Now it is with reluctance that we see you leave for your various vocations. As the blind man of Jericho pleaded for light to see his way, we pray that you, too, receive from Christ the gift of vision to dis- cern the true from the false, - the genuine from the counterfeit, - the good from the bad. May the God of Light keep your young eyes open and ever fixed upon eternal horizons, so that after a life of service dedicated to Christ and His Mother, you come surely and safely to the eternal vision of triumphant glory. Throughout the ages sculpture has fulfilled the important need of creating forms and figures which incor- porate the ideals and the beliefs of people and of the times in which they live. Religion, legends, events, and achieve- ments have contributed sub- jects that were expressed in a permanent medium. What better material could have been contributed for the act of modeling than human beings created to the image and likeness of God. Slowly, patiently, joy- fully and many times pain- fully our parents turned, twisted, bent us so as to express the ideal girl they hoped to make of us. From babyhood, childhood, on through adolescence this process has been underway. The informal lessons of our home life, coupled with the formal lessons in the classrooms developed the contour ofa well-modeled repre- sentation which gave beauty, dignity and reverence to an unfolding form. 2 Woaafw Wane '75, X Seniors, Left Row: A. Grasping the clay in their hands they kneaded it until a general outline ofa figure was modeled. Our parents, realizing their limitations in giving us a com- plete education, delegated part of their privilege to the Sisters of St. Francis. At the Academy the religious, academic and social life continued the work of development. Mary days, annual retreat, CSMC, Third Order gave an excel- lent approach to the formation of simplicity, strength and soli- darity in the figure. The sculp- tors smoothed the rough edges and hewed out the unnecessary particles of this pliable material with the tools. Musicales, dra- matic performance, and extracurric ular activities conveyed balance and proportion while social activities added detail and interest to the developing master- piece. All is forgotten in the realization that the goal has been achieved. Since the primary aim ofa sculp- tor is permanency - what more permanent can be designed than the everlast- ing value of an immortal soul shaped by the sacra- mental hands of Christian parents?
