I don ' t want to keep on a closet shelf A lot of secrets about myself, And fool myself, as I come and go, Into thinking that nobody else will know The kind of a ' woman ' I really ami I don ' t want to dress up myself in sham. But whether cultivated or ne- glected, it must, and will, bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed seeds will fall into it, and will continue to pro- duce their useless kind. Just as a gardener culti- vates his plot, keeping it free from weeds, and grows the flowers and fruits which he needs, so may a man tend the garden of his mind, weeding out all the wrong, useless, and im- pure thoughts, and cultivat- ing all the right, useful, and pure thoughts. By this pro- cess, a man sooner or later discovers that he is the master gardener of his soul, the director of his life. NO. 325 Prowlers And Callers The date is October 31, 1979. The place is St. Mary ' s Academy, where the annual Halloween Party is taking place. Here we see a variety of funny and spooky creatures. As we visit the Tunnel, where the Seniors are holding their annual Spook House, we see Jeanine Silas dressed as Dracula, and Jo Barrett and Kathy Travis in the jail. Sr. Marlene and Diane Franqueare patroling the scene as two Keystone Cops. Also, St. Mary ' s held a phonethon this fall to try to reach a $10,000 goal. Many hours of dedicated phoning and horn-honking resulted in pledges totaling over $13,000. Prizes were given to Marty Hopp for the most money raised, and to Sue Teichman for making the most calls in a given time period for the Academy. 46 _ 47 Parents Day It ' s another typical parents day at Saint Mary ' s Academy, girls running with tear tilled eyes, parents smiling with open arms, and then a quick embrace and the day begins. Many events occur throughout this special day. From mass and sports exhibitiions to school conferences and drama productions. It ' s a fun filled adventure. But, all too soon, the day must end. Girls and parents reluctantly part. 48 Actors Studio Actors Studio consists of 5 actresses, I costume designer, lights and stage crew, and a director, Pam Houston. They not only entertain us, but, also other people as well. They travel to schools and compete in competition which they have received rewards. The actresses seem to have a good time doing what they do best. 49 50 Spirit Week Spirit Week was a great success this year. It not only promoted much spirit, but also provided fun. This year ' s schedule of Spirit Week is as follows: Monday - Clash Day Tuesday - Gangster Day Wednesday - Saint Day Thursday - Blue S White Day Friday - Occupation Day All grades attained a great deal of spirit during the week, but the sophomores won this year by a slim margin. Twas the night before Christmas, when all through our pad, not a creature was stirring, not even my dad. The gym socks were hung by the chimney at noon, in hopes that Mother would wash them soon. My sister was nestled all snug in her bed, while visions of John Travolta boogied through her head. And Mama and her cold cream and I half asleep, had just settled down after watching The Deep. When out on the sundeck I heard a big smash, I jumped from my bed while grabbing my cash. Away to the window I ran like a sprinter, tore open the shutters and got a big splinter. The moon shinning brightly on the week-old snow, lit up the screen of the drive-in show. When what to my blood- shot eyes should appear, but a minature sleigh and eight giant reindeer. And a little old driver with a long white beard, I thought to myself, Man he is weird! More rapid than trains running down their tracks, he whistled and shouted and jumped on their backs. Now Crasher, now Dasher, now Dancer, now Nixon, on Comet, on Stupid, on Downer, and Fric- tion. To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall, Hurry up you mules! Come when I call! As dry leaves that are blown in the fall, his team was un- organized, trying to stall. But up to the housetops, those reindeer flew, St. Nick was behind them whipping his crew. And then in a flurry I heard on the roof, the stomping and pounding of each giant hoof. As I itched my head and was turning around, down the chimney he came with an earthshak- ing sound. He was dressed all in fur from his head to his feet, his clothes were all covered with ashes and sleet. A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, he looked like a shoplifter filling his sack. His eyes how they smoldered, his dimples how deep, his cheeks were like roses, his nose like a beak. His droll little mouth was drawn up all nice, the beard on his chin was all covered with lice. The stump of his pipe he held tight in his dentures, although he took them out many times for adventures. He had a broad face and a square little turn, that popped when he laughed, like a piece of Bubble Yum. He was chubby and fat, a right jolly old bum, I laughed when I saw him and choked on my gum. With a wink of his eye and an order to his elf, he tripped on the rug and hit his head on the shelf. He spoke not a work, but went straight to his work, he filled all the gym socks, while I thought, What a jerk! And laying a bill on the side of the table, he said, Send the money by mail or by cable. He sprang to his sleigh, to his herd, gave a lash, and away they all flew, when I saw them all crash. But I heard him exclaim, as he drove through the sleet, Good-bye, I ' m going home now, to soak my poor feet. An Irish Blessing 79 The 1979-80 Yearbook Staff Leaves Us With A Portion Of The Past, And A Foot Into The Future, I have a garden which I love, Once in awhile it looks perfect. All the watering, feeding, pruning and love add up to a moment of beauty. Then I think ... if only I could keep it this way, preserve this moment forever. But my garden is alive. Time and seasons bring changes. Living things must change. A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. This book is dedicated to a thought, not new, but durable ... I am a living thing which must change. If I can accept the changes, I can accept myself, and when I accept myself I can enjoy the changes and the beauty of the changes in the garden of my life. Leonard Nimoy 80 ■r , i ' y T cf Au rux vac.
