New at Saint Mary ' s this year is the values program , initiated by the resident counselor, Linda Haas, and implemented by the Student -Staff Ad- visory Council. Each new emphasis centered around a different value, and each focus was accompanied by discussions and class or individual projects . As students showed their special talents, gifts, and insights, it was hoped they would learn something about where they stand on some of life ' s important hurdles. A good first year, and getting better! The values focus began witn a kick-off assembly, a film perhaps, and then successive weeks of talks and projects. Subjects ranged from spirituality and sexuality to de- cision-making and self-esteem. One of the most creative months was one in which a girl adopted an egg for a week to learn about the risks and responsibilities of parenthood and decision- making. As members of each class participated in the activities, spirit points were attributed to that class and at the end of the month, a values dinner was held, announcing the winner for that month as well as commending girls who did outstanding jobs during that month ' s emphasis. 48 KAcemoseops da ys Variety h teaming K-Days are different learning exper- iences for the students of S.M.A. Our first K-Day was researching the history of the Peoria Diocese and Catholic educa - tion. Throughout the day, we scraped for information and then studied for a quiz- down competition later on that day . from Parishes Zo Pizza Our second K-Day was learning not only for the students , but the staff as. well . In the morning, the students spent their time making their own lunches , centered around them for their group. The after- noon was spent doing things such as ma- crame ' , exercising, and even ice-skat- ing. All these activities were mind-ex- panding and fun besides! What is it that we ' re living for? But then, sometimes we don ' t. It offers us friends to meet with and provides us with a not-so-quiet-place to go crazy in. Dormitories are strange. They ' re fun (and funny!) But often boring. They ' re confining. But they allow us freedom of thought and an environment in which to tap that hidden, and sometimes feared, resource of the mind. Dorms are okay, I guess, because they ' re a part of my life. 60 PA ZKOftS Ma. de la Luz Adame Vega, Queretaro, Qro. , Mexico Linda Allen, Nauvoo, Illinois Ambassador Lock Company, Chicago, Illinois Arthur F.
