Montesano, who proved to be League Champ. proved just a little too much St. Martins. as the Rangers saw a fourth quarter rally fall short in a wet and rr contest played at Montesano. After a weak first half. the Ranger line and backfield gave the Bulldogs plenty of trouble during the remainder of the game. Pain went 10 yards in the last period to score for St. Martins. Fumbles hurt both teams. Although they produced the play-of-the-week in Wlashington State. in their battle with Raymond. the Rangers were held to a 19-19 tie on the Seagull field. Steve Ryder took a second place in Oratory and the team of Francis Patnode and Leonard Mills won second place in B Division debate. The next tournament attended was our own St. Martins 2nd annual Forensic Tournament. Three trophies were won and much experieneed was gained. Steve Ryder again took .1 second in Oratory while he and his partner. Ken Dolan. teamed up to win a second place in A Division debate, Two freshmen debaters, joe Partington and lid X'v'artelle won a second place in B Division debate. Then came the Seattle University debate tournament. Here one member of the St. Martins debate squad stood out for his fine performance. This was Steve Ryder who won two first place trophies in Oratory and Impromptu. This merited him a one-year scholarship to Seattle University. At the next tournament at Gonzaga University the Rangers did not fare too well. Although three teams won 16 out of 18 debates collectively none were able to crack the finals or bring home any trophies. At the Grays Harbor College debate tournament the Rangers, again plagued by bad luck, managed to win only one trophy. That was a first place in Extempt, won by Joe Partington, a freshman debater. However, valuable experience was gained by all in attendance. Besides trophies the St. Martins debaters this year have also won other various awards. Al Englebert placed first in his district Voice of Democracy Contest. The fol- lowing debaters have won certificates of merit for their achievements: At the Seattle University tournament the teams of Patnode and Mills, Partington and XVartelle won certificates. At the Grays Harbor tournament Schorno and Peterson also Partington and Whirtelle won third place certificates in debate. lid XX'artelle also won a third place certificate in Extempt. The following debaters have shown promise this year and should do well in the next: Peter Beeson and Dave McDonald are promising debaters in Lincoln-Douglas style debate and should come home with many trophies in this division next year. Others are john Rotchford, Francis Patnode, Leonard Mills, joe Partington and Ed XVartelle. Checking Ballots Partington, Patnode. Wfartelle S.M.H.S. Most of the students learned many fascinating things as they viewed the various exhibits and roamed about the Fair Grounds. Many returned with prizes of different kinds and virtually everyone came home penniless. but with a feeling of satisfaction in a day of fun well spent. 1- ' I -N 3,5 l1'ld Ill -13 Q ,ggi ,Q - Q in .- 7 I ' '-'i s L art fl' l -rl 1 yr: 4 . The rooms on the second floor de- signed for greater living comfort and bet- ter study facilities were anything but pri- vate this season, with constant traffic from buddies who camped between Private Roomers classes and during free time in these rooms Many pies and cakes and liter- ally gallons of pop were consumed by way of between class snacks in these hall side havens on second floor, Portico capers on the off limit roof was the challenge to every roomer, be- cause it took a bit of careful planning to avoid Father Conrad, the prefect, who demanded that a fine be paid each time one was caught on the portico roof. 1, g -- if ' 4 -2-75 Y' ,,M, I .A I ,u,. , 'J' uf Patrons MR. 8: MRS.
