Shaw. Carry on is the slogan of the Martian staff this year. In years past the College has managed the publication. but with most of our would-be college men in the armed forces. the high school has shown the Martian reading public that it can do a commendable job of editing. Mr. Michael Contris. moderator for the last several year. undertook to mold inexperienced men into a capable staff. and. judging by results. we believe he did the 'job' well. An editor-in- chief has to be a man who likes work. even drudgery. one who is persistent- the selection made. Ray Schmalz. was a good one. Ray not only did his own work well, but saw to it that articles were written and ready when needed. Bruce Hodgert and John Collins were the able associate editors. Feature editors were men of past journalistic experienceflom O'Grady. Jack Hutchinson, George Casey and .lack Fick. Jack Harvey. college Junior. doubled as college editor and business manager. doing a near perfect bit of work in both positions. Sports were variously and capably handled by Art Marchetti. Frank Shovlain, Bill Kenney. Roy Benefiel and Bill Hausmann. Bill Kruger and Stanley Vifoolard were the faithful circulation managers. Reporters were Jerry Lamm, Leonard Rochon. Tom Mallon. Sam Levinson. Larry Roberts and Jerry Shaw. The number of men interested in the Martian this year. augurs well for next year when the great majority of them will return to continue their journalistic endeavors. A feature of the Martian this year has been an expanded Alumni column in which our men in the service were kept in contact with one another. Through this medium more and more soldiers. sailors. marines. air corps men the world over who attended S.M.C.-,- many of them hope to come back when uit is all over -received news of their Alma Mater-for the Martian is sent to all Alumni in the armed forces who keep the school informed of their address. Formerly a bi-weekly. the Martian was published monthly this year. More editorial experience and better Hnances may result in a bi-weekly publica- tion again next year. Q C-',,-. 3 ' :,.. The Hanger Grirssbaw SITTING. left to right: O' Grady. A. Miller. Mallon. Har vey. Hodgert. Hausmann. Mar- chetti, Siebers. Kruger. STAND- ING: Kenney. l.amm, Rochon. I The Ranger Crossbow makes its bow to the public this year, continuing the story of student life and activity where last years SAMARCO stopped. The name has been changed because this is predominantly a High School venture-and while the High School and College have always cooperated in certain school activities, they maintain separate journalistic publications. It is also a tribute to our College men. who are now scattered over the world in service of a common cause. XVe are leaving the SANIARCO for the College to continue. XVe also harbor the hope that the High School will be large enough to maintain an Annual of its own in years to come. Many of us are novices at the art of producing a yearbook. At times we wondered if our Ranger Crossbow would ever attain reality. But through the untir-ing efforts and encouragement of our Moderator, Father Meinrad. our plans have taken shape, and we are finally ready to go to press. A special expression of appreciation is due to Father Abbot Raphael who has contributed to the artistic makeup of the book, and to Father Sebastian, who has spent many long hours helping in the photography work. The editors. .lack Harvey for the College and Bruce Hodgert for the High School. were outstanding contributors to the Mcirlzicm. qualifying them- selves for more detailed work on the annual. Tom O'Grady, Feature Editor. has participated in every journalistic venture in his four years of high school, developing a fine knack for writing. He was ably assisted by Jerry Lamm and l.eonard Rochon. Sports writing was in the capable and experienced hands of Bill Haus- mann. aided by Art Marchetti and Bill Kenney. Carl Siebers bore the brunt of the Art work and arranging. Art Miller, noted school car- toonist. and Bill Kruger, clever penman, backed Siebers in his work. Unsung heroes of many yearbooks are the business managers, and ours. Dick Patten and Tom Mallon, rate among the best. To all the students who aided in any way, our sincere thanks. Mr. Miller, of Johnson-Cox Co., a friend of annual staffs at St. Martins for many years, was generous in his assistance and advice. His suggestions helped n inexperienced staff over many difficult spots. Mr. Emerson, of the limerson Studio, Olympia, is to be congratu- lated on the fine photographic work he did. Any successes this first issue of the Ranger Crossbow scores can be attributed to the willing- ness and cooperation of the whole staff and the students: any deficiencies to the inexperience. To everyone who in any way aided us to attain our goal. a sincere vote of appreciation. I XIHLR MLINR,-XD GAUI.

Shaw Courtney and Xlaglatlrx' ol the Altec Class inspecting a model ot the- BYYI-ll. Two new classes in the High School curriculum attracted much attention this year-Aircraft Recognition and Radio Code. Taught by Father Sebastian Ruth. OSB.. in this his fortyanrst year of teaching at St. Nlartins both classes drew a maximum attendance ol' enthusiastic students. Father Sebastian himself is an expert in both these fields. and his own knowledge ofthe subject plus the appeal of the material set some kind of record for perfection in class work. Many of the air-rec class formed into the Ranger Flight Club. This organization engaged in the building of model airplanes. At the end of the first semester an assembly was held for the student body to exhibit the abilities of both the Air Rec Class and the Ranger Flight Club. ln the Model Airplane contest which Father Sebastian sponsored. many excellent models were shown. Chief among these were the models built by Jim Baxter. Andy Litwin, George lolenly, Jerry Shaw. George l.andeis. Pat Gordon. Joe Traynor. Benny Schwab and Phil Downey. The Air-Rec class showed its skill by naming off in quick time the type of plane flashed on the screen. The radio code class is developing the ability to read and send messages in code-and will be a valuable aid to many lads who intend to enter some branch of the service. 6 C L-ls!
