S?1'ggf?S:Qi3'Qg Newman St. Martin's ended the 1970 football season on a grand note by smothering the Newman Greenies 20-14, Bill Ball and Gary Brewster led the mighty Saint offense as they overpowered the strong Newman defense, After holding Newman following the open- ing kick-off, the Saints wasted no time in scorin . On the second play, Bill Ball romped throug a huge hole in the line for a '79 yard touchdown. Willie Hatch grabbed a pass from Gary Brewster for the 2 point conversion. Recovery of a Newman fumble put the Saints deep in Newman's territory. Ball a ain ran over the Greenie's defense, this time Ear a two yard score, giving the Saints a 14-0 lead. Newman, no ushover, came back late in the first quarter far a one yard touchdown. Newman again managed to squeeze by the tough Saint defense with 2 minutes left in the first half for another one yard score, knotting the score at 14-14. The second half of the ame was all for the Saints, a Newman was held scoreless. New- man had the ball for only one series of plays in the third quarter as the Saint offense con- trolled the game. Gary Brewster scored the winning touchdown by dashing in from the five yard line. The Saints now led 20-14. Willie Hatch saved the game with a timely interception, stopping a Newman drive late in the fourth quarter, The Saint offense then proceeded to drive down to the Newman six yard line and, with 46 seconds left in the game, let the clock run out. The score was set at 20-14, the Saints having beaten Newman for the first time in seven years. Philip Hatch and Mike Sistrunk were the de- fensive stalwarts for the Saints. .lg M.
