Vandebilt The Vandebilt Terriers of Houma led by quarterback Fritz Rau, outpowered the Saints 33-14. St. Martin's surprised the favored Ter- riers when Gary Brewster hit Keith Maxson on a 6 yard pass for the first score of the game, giving the Saints a 6-0 edge, The mighty Saints defense hel Van- debilt on t e ensuing series and regained possession of the ball, A Saint 's fumble was scooped up by a Terrier who raced 66 yards for a touchdown, putting Vandy ahead '7-6. Not Cgiving up, Bill Ball literally ran over 3 efenders on his way to a 42 yard touchdown jaunt. The conversion pass from Gary Brewster to Willie Hatch shoved the Saints in front, 14-7. Van- debilt came back late in the second per- iod on a 21 yard scoring pass by outstand- ing quarterback Fritz Rau. In the final moments of the same quarter, Rau again connected for a lO yard score, putting the Terriers ahead, 20-14, The Saints were a ain pla ued by Rau in the second half as fre led tie Terriers to two more touchdowns, ending the game with Vandty ahead, 33-14, The Saint de ense put up an excellent effort, being led by Willie Hatch, David Hesse, Carson Llewellyn, and Foster Duncan. Hatch and Hesse intercepted several key passes, stalling Vandebilt drives. Bill Ball led the Saints offense, grind- ing out 88 gyards against the overpowering Vandebilt efense. St. john, Aroused by a smashin defeat at the hands of the Sam garthe Hornets, the St, Martin's Saints celebrated homecomingl by liter- ally crushing the St. Io n Chargers in a 40-6 romp. The Saints capitalized on the long scoring play several times. St, John's lone score came in the third quarter on a 43 yard touchdown. The rest of the game was all for the Saints. Bill Ball started the scoring spree for the Saints on the fourth play of the game when he crashed through the middle and raced 49 yards for a touchdown. The sec- ond quarter's scoring consisted of two Saint touchdowns. Gary Brewster broke loose for a 33 yard touchdown jaunt, Keith Maxson added the finishing touch for the first half by breaking several tack- les and racing for another 33 yard touchdown on an end-around. Gary Brewster crossed the goal line again in the third quarter, this time on a 65 yard long scamp- er to set the score at 28-6. The final period saw Ball crash over from the one yard line for his second score of the game, Richie Rusch scored his first touchdown of the year on a 43 yard sprint, ending the Saints' scoring contest. The Saints offensedgroun out 395 yards on the groun and 17 in the air, The Saints offense was by no means the only decisive factor in the game. The stout St. Martin's defense crushed the Charger's offense completely, allowing but one score, Defensive stalwarts for the Saints included Mike Sistrunk, Philip Hatch, Carson Llewellyn, Mike Kantor, and David Hesse. S?1'ggf?S:Qi3'Qg Newman St. Martin's ended the 1970 football season on a grand note by smothering the Newman Greenies 20-14, Bill Ball and Gary Brewster led the mighty Saint offense as they overpowered the strong Newman defense, After holding Newman following the open- ing kick-off, the Saints wasted no time in scorin . On the second play, Bill Ball romped throug a huge hole in the line for a '79 yard touchdown. Willie Hatch grabbed a pass from Gary Brewster for the 2 point conversion. Recovery of a Newman fumble put the Saints deep in Newman's territory. Ball a ain ran over the Greenie's defense, this time Ear a two yard score, giving the Saints a 14-0 lead. Newman, no ushover, came back late in the first quarter far a one yard touchdown. Newman again managed to squeeze by the tough Saint defense with 2 minutes left in the first half for another one yard score, knotting the score at 14-14. The second half of the ame was all for the Saints, a Newman was held scoreless. New- man had the ball for only one series of plays in the third quarter as the Saint offense con- trolled the game. Gary Brewster scored the winning touchdown by dashing in from the five yard line. The Saints now led 20-14. Willie Hatch saved the game with a timely interception, stopping a Newman drive late in the fourth quarter, The Saint offense then proceeded to drive down to the Newman six yard line and, with 46 seconds left in the game, let the clock run out. The score was set at 20-14, the Saints having beaten Newman for the first time in seven years. Philip Hatch and Mike Sistrunk were the de- fensive stalwarts for the Saints. .lg M.
