Buras St. Martin's won their first district game played by edging past the Buras Wildcats 14-8. Quarter- back Gary Brewster and halfback Joey Durham led the Saints to victory by scoring a touchdown a iece. The Saints struck first in the openirgg perioda after Benton Gay recovered a blocked punt eep in the Wildcats' territory. The Saints' score came when Joey Durham crashed over the goalline from six yards out. The conversion attemcpt failed, Buras manage to put some Cpoints on the board before half-time with a 13 yar touchdown pass that capped a '70 yard drive. The tow point con- version was successful and Buras led at alf-time 8-6. The third quarter was a defensive battle, as most of the game was. Neither club was able to score in the third period. The turning ploint of the game ossurred in the fourth quarter w en Mike Sistrunk crashed through the Buras line and nailed the Buras runner in the endzone for a safety. This knotted the score at 8-8 and dgave the Saints the momentum that they nee ed. After an exchange of punts, the Saints fought '70 yards down to the Buras one yard line. Gary Brewster, sneaked across the goal line behind the powerful blocking of the Saint's offensive line, The conversion failed, leavin the score at 14-8. McDonough 35 The tough Saints added anoth- er victory to their record in beat- ing McDonough 35 by a score of 20-6 at Behrrnan Stadium. McDonough 35 surprised the Saints by posting a 6-O lead early in the second quarter. The Saints were quick to rally and knotted the score at 6-6 on a 5 yard burst by Monty Burlingame. The half ended with the score tied at 6-6. St. Martin's came back in the second half and played sjnirited ball. The Saints drove own to McDonothg1h's one yard line. Bill Ball got e nod and crashed in to put t e Saints ahead 12-6. Monty Burlingame ran in the conversion to up e score 14-6. The Saints clinched the victory when Keith Maxson rabbed a 29 yard pass from Gary irewster for the final touchdown in the last quarter. Q , , 5 ,I Q vvvvv W-FW --vmwwgmmarg Ben, Franklin St. Martin's Saints, having beaten Buras the previous week were stunned by a tie with the Ben Franklin Falcons. The Saints steadil ran up and down the field on offznse, but only scored once, Bill Ball blast- ed in for the Saint's only points of the evening, making the score 6-0. St, Martin's drove within the Falcon's twenty yard line four times, but stalled and failed to score. The Saint defense held the Falcons for the whole game, ex- cept on one drive in the fourth quarter when the Falcons mana ed to sustain a drive and score, Tiis knotted the tally at 6-6 and ended the scoring for the glame. The Saints marc ed up and down the field on offense following fine gerforrnances by halfbacks Bill all and Joey Durham, but were able to score but six points.
