This is hopeful and reassuring in a sense, but we adults must not delude ourselves into thinking that the dis- enchantment of young people with the way we in authority are running things is but a passing fancy. They want a world of honesty, justice, and compassion. They want a world more concerned with the human condition in contrast to success spelled out in terms of the accumulation and proliferation of 'things. ' lt is essential that as adults we, too, turn the corner in our attitudes and thoughts. Wemust come to recognize that the complexity of existing problems are of our own making, And wemust be flexible, honest and intelligent enough to redesign our priorities. At the same time we must provide those educational opportunities for our youth which will enable them to gain the background and determination to manage the problems which are threatening them and to point toward a more helpful future for all mankind, ZMWJHZ 0. ws Sew QW' alfa' if Top: ROBERT L. The chief function of the En- glish Department is to foster under- standing and appreciation of our language, as well as to provide instruction in the preferred forms and structure of this language, Since this discipline is repeti- tive and cumulative, efforts are made to correlate the work on all levels, In addition to basic in- struction in literature, composi- tion, and grammar for all students in the upper school, members of this department have also assumed responsibility for the school pub- lications and dramatic activities, Top Center: SUZANNE P. Foreign, Language Three years of a foreign lan- guage are required toward gradu- ation at St, Martin's School, , The students have a choice of either French, Spanish, or Latin. Latin is being gradually phased out and will eventually be replaced by either German or Russian. In the Modern Languages, we try to teach the students to under- stand, speak, read, and write the language - with special emphasis on understanding and speakingf To fulfill those aims, the direct ,approach is used to avoid as much as possible the use of English in the classroom, Top: MITCHELL BERARD, Depart- ment Head, B, A, , University of Southwestern Louisiana, C, D, F., University of Bordeaux, France, Center-Left: ISABEL L, ANGLADE, B, A, , University of Puerto Rico, M, A, , Tulane University. The science teaching of the past decades is most inappropriate for the world we live in today and will be even less suitable for the world of tomor- row. We are undergoing a revolution in sciences. A close partnership has been developed betweell science and the economics, social, educational, and N political issues of our time. Today there are few problems in any of these areas that can be discussed to their fullest meaning in the absence of a scientist. Today all over the world and among all peoples there is an awareness that scientific literacy is essential to an understanding of the nature and events of contemporary civilization. For the 1970-71 year, we have offered calculus for the first time. This is an advanced placement course and may earn col- lege credit for those who pass the ad- vanced placement exam with a suf- ficiently high score, Only those stu- dents who have taken Math IV in their junior year will be qualified for the calculus course. Their two point conversion was good. ln the second quarter, the Saints fought their way down to the Mandeville one-foot line. On the Very next play, Mandeville back Danny Thomp- son raced 99 yards for a touch- down. Their conversion attem t failed, The scoring ended in the fourth quarter on a four yard run by Sams of Mandeville. The tow point con- version was successful and Buras led at alf-time 8-6. The third quarter was a defensive battle, as most of the game was. Neither club was able to score in the third period. The turning ploint of the game ossurred in the fourth quarter w en Mike Sistrunk crashed through the Buras line and nailed the Buras runner in the endzone for a safety. This knotted the score at 8-8 and dgave the Saints the momentum that they nee ed. After an exchange of punts, the Saints fought '70 yards down to the Buras one yard line. Gary Brewster, sneaked across the goal line behind the powerful blocking of the Saint's offensive line, The conversion failed, leavin the score at 14-8. Barthe, however, tallied 24 of their 32 points in the second quarter, despite several outstanding defensive efforts by Saints. The second half was a much more evenly fought ball game. They defeated tough St. Bernard to gain the Riverside Championship for the second year in a row and they won the Port Sulphur Holiday Invitational, Their December recordtwas 12 wins and 3 losses. District play started in January and the team got off to a bad start by losing their first two district games. However, theyc am e back strong by winning the next three district games. In both efforts against arch-rival Newmang however, the team played exceptionally well losing the first in overtime and losing the second by one point, lf they had played as well against the other district opponents, they would have gotten into the state play-offs. I would like to thank co-captains Phil Hatch fall district honorable mentionp and Gary Brewster fall district 2nd teamj for their fine efforts this season. Also thanks go to seniors Mike Kantor, John Corder, Ty Cook, and Keith Maxon. These boys had a 19-12 win-loss record this year and a 23-19 record their junior year giving them a 42 win and 21 loss record for their varsity careers.
