-.i..-.-.....-u Sam Barthe PEPPER HATCH JOHN KIMBLE HAM LOB BAYARD MILLER Haltback Center Tackle Tackle Martinez Leads Hornets By JAY, HANDELMAN Halfback Billy Martinez scored two touchdowns, one on a .spectacular tackle-breaking 73-yard dash with a pass re- ception, to lead the Class B Barthe Hornets to an 18-0 win over the Class A St. Martin's Saints Friday at St. Martin's. Martinez, a solidly built 175-pound senior, performed his feats of running magic before scouts from Alabama, Tulane and LSU who were on hand to view his talents. The Hornet also received strong rushing support from teams with 80 yards. Martinez Kenny Miller, who led both teams with 80 yards. Martinez netted 57 rushing while the Saints' Carl Muckley ran for 70 yards. Martinez scored his firi touchdown on a four-yard burst off left tackle in the opening quarter shortly after the Horn- ets had put two points on the board by blocking a St. Mar- tin's punt in the end zone. The Jim Wade to Martinez 73-yard pass play, plus anoth- er safety in the second quar- ter, capped the scoring and set the stage for a defensive- dominated second half. Leading 9-0 early in the sec- ond period, Barthe took over following a St. Martin's punt on the Hornet 27-yard stripe. On the first play, Wade hit Martinez with a flat pass at the line of scrimmage. Martinez was immediately hit by two would-be tacklers, but the churning legs of the strong runner broke him loose. Five yards upfield he ran into a gang of Saints defensive men and seemed stopped for good, but he rolled, turned, kept his legs constantly in action and 0ver Saints amazingly broke away fron the stunned crowd of tackler: and rambled onward to the goal. There will be few, if any runs to match it this season. David Paine blocked Carl Muckley's punt early in the game to set up the safety. Muckley recovered the ball behind his goal, tried to run it out, but was hit by Miller before reaching the goal stripe. Barthe had 153 yards rushing and 106 through the air as Wade clicked on four of six passes. St. Martin's netted 85 byards rushing and 113 througlt the air. Barthe is 3-0 for the season While the Saints are 1-1. Barthe .. ... 9 9 U 0-18 ST. Mcirtin's , 0 0 D 0-0 Scoring: Sutetv iPcine tackled Mucklev behind gooli.
