IQ57 Too swiftly the years have fled for us. Too soon has the time come for us to venture into an unexplored world with far-stretching horizons. We wonder what lies ahead. Now as we prepare to set out upon 1ife's highway, we ponder on the many friends and memories we shall leave behind us . But, we have learned much since our first days here. We have learned what we are not likely to forget. Now with God as our guide, we are ready. Wish us good luck .......

His was no easy task, for Ger- many was wavering unsteadily in the service of the Church under the terrors of war. During these years of strife, His Holiness spent most of his time doing works of mercy, extending a. help- ing hand to the suffering and needy. When the Great War ended, the conditions in Germany grew worse, and the influence of Archbishop Pacelli was especially felt. Revolt spread through cer- tain sections of the country and in this trying time, he exercised his ability as a foreseeing diplomat and statesman. At the formation of the German Republic, the Archbishop served as papal nuncio to Germany and was beloved and respected for his piety and learn- ing. His every moment was spent in the interest of the Church, visiting as he did, nearly every part of that country. In all, he spent twelve years in Germany and in that time wrought much for his Master. When the word arrived from the Pope that Archbishop Pacelli was to become a Prince of the Church, a Cardinal, the love he left behind caused one child to run to him pleading, Please, come back! The Archbishop could not hold back his tears, such was his devotion.
