If this was a great honor, it was a greater responsibility, for now he had to deal with the rulers of every nation in the world. It was through Cardinal Pacelli that Italy was forced by public opinion to stop its persecution of the Church, and through the same medium, the Pope's warning about the Nazis was made lmown to the German people. Often referred to by the Pope as the 'Trans- atlantic Cardinal, Pacelli visited South Amer- ica where he was representative of the Holy Fa- ther at a Eucharistic Congress. One year later he was chosen to represent the Vicar of Christ at the shrine of our Lady in Lourdes, France. It was here that he preached that 'No one can stop the Church from doing her work. The following year found Cardinal Pacelli on his way to the United States. Once more he ex- hibited his diplomatic ability and his love for his people. Shortly after his return from Amer- ica, Cardinal Pacelli made a trip to the shrine of St. Therese, in France, with the sole purpose of praying for Pius XI who was nearing death. Two years later in 1939, the chair of St. Peter was vacated, and the Church mourned a strong char acter while preparing for an even stronger per- sonageg that of Pope Pius XH.
