The shining example of this outstanding personage has influenced and awed those within and without his realm. Throughout the Christian world the Vicar of Christ is hailed as the Greatest Leader of our Times , a title that portrays him as a follower of the King of Kings seeking to increase the number of his Master's fold Now, as theme of the 1957 Victoria, we, of St. Martin's humbly present Pope Pius XII: 9 K' ope of MKTUWIJWA 11-in-in-71 His Excellency MOST REVEREND DANIEL J. FEENEY, D. D., LLD Bishop of Portland The spiritual guardian of the Church in Maine, an Apostle of the Church, Bishop Feeney represents the Pope in the diocese of Portland. To him we pay our token of respect and offer our heartfelt prayers and good wishes edic ation The Victoria 1957 is dedicated to those parents who have complied with the laws of the Church and the wishes of Our Holy Father the Pope, in seeing that their children have received a Catholic education. In appreciation for this priceless favor we dedicate this book to them. God bless them all! The Papacy. . . Truth and wisdom forever. Fountainhead of continuing inspiration and guidance for the faithful. It is true to say that the present Pope is one of the most outstanding Pontiffs to have oc- cupied the throne of Peter in modern times. To his vast learning and erudition is added a degree of sanctity that is striking and impresses even non-Catholics when they are received in audience by him. From the outset of his reign, he was call- ed the Angelic Pastor, and such, both his writings and his speeches show him to be. Pope Pius XII was born Eugenio Pacelli, in Rome, in 1876. Even in his childhood, he exhib- ited his love of the God who had created such a wondrous world. Frail and sickly, Eugenio was only eighteen when he entered the seminary., His health was not goodg but within five years of in- tense study, Eugenio Pacelli, by the grace of God, became Father Pacelli, Little did he realize that forty years later, he would assume the pas- torate of Peter's See, as Pope, on the anniversary of that great day. This is the first chapter in the life of the Greatest Leader of Our Times. Faculty THE Q SPEAKS 'You have the future within your control be- cause in your hands are fashioned those who shall dominate and mold future generations. These generations will succeed in forming and mastering a new society for the greatest good of the human family. This depends on your action, for no action patterned on that of the family home has a more lasting effect on the soul of young people than the school. Here is the importance of your task. If this was a great honor, it was a greater responsibility, for now he had to deal with the rulers of every nation in the world. It was through Cardinal Pacelli that Italy was forced by public opinion to stop its persecution of the Church, and through the same medium, the Pope's warning about the Nazis was made lmown to the German people. Often referred to by the Pope as the 'Trans- atlantic Cardinal, Pacelli visited South Amer- ica where he was representative of the Holy Fa- ther at a Eucharistic Congress. One year later he was chosen to represent the Vicar of Christ at the shrine of our Lady in Lourdes, France. It was here that he preached that 'No one can stop the Church from doing her work. The following year found Cardinal Pacelli on his way to the United States. Once more he ex- hibited his diplomatic ability and his love for his people. Shortly after his return from Amer- ica, Cardinal Pacelli made a trip to the shrine of St. Therese, in France, with the sole purpose of praying for Pius XI who was nearing death. Two years later in 1939, the chair of St. Peter was vacated, and the Church mourned a strong char acter while preparing for an even stronger per- sonageg that of Pope Pius XH. Seniors - . K X 1 'With our mind's eye we see the innumerable ranks of the young people, as bud opening to the first light of the davsm. Marvelous and charming is this germination of youth from a generation which almost seemed doomed to extinction-a youth new and vibrant in its freshness and vigor, with eyes fixed on the future and also with an un- restrainable impulse directed to the highest idealsg a youth determined to improve on the past and obtain more solid conquests of greater value to the progress of man on earth. Pope Pius XII PATRICIA ARSENAULT, Patsy Commercial The shy girl with the charming disposition, who has a lot of school spirit is our Patsy. Tall, slender and frail, she plans on entering Husson College in the fall. We know that she will make a good secretary for someone. DORIS BLANCHETTE, Doris Commercial Courteous and co-operative, Doris is well-liked by all at St. Martin's. A good dancer and school-spirted, D. never misses a social and is on hand to root for the home team. Doris does not say what she plans to do, but we are quite certain that she has a special someone waiting. EDWARD BOUCHARD, Eddie General Eddie's blushing ability is a help to his good looks. Though quiet and rather timid, he, nevertheless, figures well in the best of company. He claims to be college bound, but we strongly suspect that he'll stop at Rox's instead. ANN MARIE BOUTAUGH, Ann General Some people think the world is made for fun and frolic... Ann is our own personal package of mis- chief. She is a real live wire and has had her antics all through high school. Let us hope that success will light up her life as easily as her smile has lit up ours. DOROTHIEA BRUNETTE, Dot College Here comes our most studious senior. She has also done a swell job as prefect of the sodality and co-editor of the YB. She may look meek and mild, but she has quite a temperg we think it will come in handy, since she plans on becoming a school teacher. Valedlctorlan DONNA CARUSO, Donna Commercial If you see a Ford Beach Wagon rumbling down the road, head for the hills! Donna has the distinc- tion of being the first Senior girl to get her license. She holds the title of being an A one typist. She is thinking of entering Husson Col- lege in the fall. We wonder why she wants to be a sec...??? N. MICHAEL COLOMBO, Mike General Mike can always see the funnier side of things, even when it isn't to be seen. Quietly mis- chievous, Mike is the man with the ad libs and his specialty is stirring up laughter in the back seats of the classrooms. We suggest that he try television as comedian after graduation. MARY JEANNE CORBIN, Mary Jane fins, Commercial Meet our Patron Queen! The top salesman of the class. It is surpris- ing to all that M. J. has a temper like an Irishman even though her hair differs in color. In her Junior year, she added vitality to the cheer- leaders squad. We think Mary J. will go a long way. PATRICIA DAIGLE, Pat Commercial Rolling eyes, a roving heart, this brown-haired Miss is friendly to everyone. Her fine sense of humor adds enjoyment wherever she goes. Pat joined us only in the Junior year. She has an interest in the University of Maine, We won- der if she is Frank about it. JOYCE FRIEL, Joyce General Tall, pleasant and smilingg rhat's no one but our Joyce. Always willing to co-operate, she is known as the most helpful member of the Senior Class. Although she has not yet revealed her ambitions, we are sure her path will lead her to Matrimony. ELLEN CALVIN, Ellen College Ellen is the calm, collected ty-pe the typical bookworm. Even though she dislikes to speak in public she nevertheless can hold her own in any discussion. As to conversation, gabbing is one of Ellen's natural gifts. In her career as a lawyer,.it will certainly serve her well. 1 JOSEPH JAMIESON, Joe General The witty, barrel of fun Irishman of St. Martin's. Joe's favorite pas- time is Clowning. Wherever you find Joe you're sure to have a laugh a minute. He spends his spare time with his best friend: his Chevy. With his innocent grin and winning way, joe is all set for the future. JAC QUELINE KING, jackie General Whenever there's fun, you'll find Jackie. Until recently her pet peeve was being late for school. Addicted to hill-billy music, Jackie also proved her acting ability in the Senior Class Play as the Red-Headed Stepchild. She might exchange her diamond ring for a commerical course. CHARLES LANDRY, Charlie College Charlie is the happy go lucky type, who looks upon worry as a nuisance. He is a swell guy for those who like teasing. He is en- dowed with both looks and intelli- gence, a. good combination for a future that promises to be success- JOHN LAPLANTE, John General Here comes the handsome lad of our crew. An outspoken fellow he is. Whenever you hear music he is bound to be right there. We think Laplante will be the first to break the sound barrier in his car. Enjoy your driving while you may, John. ful THERESA MARTIN, Teresa College Theresa is a sociable, quiet girl well liked and always near at hand if anything is to be done. An honor student, her amibition is to become an R N. With her natural ability, she is sure to attain her goal. Good luck, Teresa. ETHEL MCDOUGALL, Ethel General The attractive green-eyed girl, who adds color to the senior Class is none other than Ethel. Her hobby is singing those good old western tunes, but this year she has spent her spare time learning home-making. We wonder if this has a special significance... we have it on the air as July??? Salutatorian Q LW T 3' so HARRY RUSH, Buddy College Buddy is the tall -man of the class. Ambitious, an honor student, and a 10096 co-operative fellow. His was no easy task, for Ger- many was wavering unsteadily in the service of the Church under the terrors of war. During these years of strife, His Holiness spent most of his time doing works of mercy, extending a. help- ing hand to the suffering and needy. When the Great War ended, the conditions in Germany grew worse, and the influence of Archbishop Pacelli was especially felt. Revolt spread through cer- tain sections of the country and in this trying time, he exercised his ability as a foreseeing diplomat and statesman. At the formation of the German Republic, the Archbishop served as papal nuncio to Germany and was beloved and respected for his piety and learn- ing. His every moment was spent in the interest of the Church, visiting as he did, nearly every part of that country. In all, he spent twelve years in Germany and in that time wrought much for his Master. When the word arrived from the Pope that Archbishop Pacelli was to become a Prince of the Church, a Cardinal, the love he left behind caused one child to run to him pleading, Please, come back! The Archbishop could not hold back his tears, such was his devotion. Classes 'A believing youth is one who has a lofty ideal and who is deeply convinced of the reality, the power and the value of this ideal. You possess this high ideal. You wish to work for the cause of God. You wish to work for the cause of Christ and His Church. The teach- ings and the grace of Jesus Christ, of which He has made the Church the custodian and the dis- penser, the Catholic faith and Christian prin- ciples have always constituted the essential foundation for the happiness and greatness of your people. Help to maintain this indispen- sable foundation in your native land-this is the ideal which you pursue. Pope Pius XII Juniors With the passing of this year, the Juniors have in- creased both in their knowledge and know-how. As a class, they have been co-operative in accepting the responsibilities and duties which accompany the task of climbing to the goal at which they are aiming. Thus, on March 2, 1939, on his sixty-third birth- day, the present Sovereign Pontiff was elected as successor to Pius XI, taking the name Pius XII. The personal life of this prominent leader is one of austerity and sacrifice. In the midst of his functions as Father of Christendom, he pre- serves the humility that has always character- ized him. His dealings with all are abundant in gentleness and kindness, so deep is his reverence so profound his piety. The Holy Father has no peer, yet he himself prefers to be a servant to those who serve God. He gives unstintingly of himself for the welfare of his people, and he is recognized as an eminent authority in decisions that affect the destiny of the entire world. From his home within the Vatican walls, Pope Pius XII, as God's Ambassador of Peace, has used every weapon of peace to com- bat assailants who are determined to undermine the Church. The eighteen year pontificate of this dedicated Father has indeed been a labori- ous and fruitful one. Let us, by our prayers, help him in his work for the greater glory of God, and for the salva- tion and sanctification of the number of souls confided to his pastoral care.
