7 F if An Act to incorporate the town was passed by the Leg islature and approved by the Governor on March 16 1901 and on the 18th day of April the same year, the first town meet ing was held for the purpose of acceptmg its charter and of elect mg municipal offlcers In 1907 the Millinocket Trust Compa ny was established, the present bank, thoroughly modern structure was erected At the annual meeting, 1n March 1919 the town voted to raise the sum of 52,500 to es tablish a Free Memorial Library To this the Great Northern Paper Company added a gift of S1 000, and other numerous donations made it possible, up to this fiscal year, to have some 50 000 books in circulation In the year 1937 the Federal Government made a valuable addition to the Community Up to this time the Post Office had been housed in various rented places The well kept lawns and hedges of our Post Office make it one of the most attractive features of the business sec tion Previous to 1939 the need for more adequate quarters for the Fire Department had long been recognized, and so this year a new station was constructed The distance from Milli nocket to other large size Penobscot colmty towns made such equipment a necessity In April 1951, a real monument to progress sprang up as the beau tiful Municipal Buildmg was erected This piece of architecture I cannot be matched by any town of comparable s1ze m New England. The year 1955 witnessed the opening of our Community Hospital which has a capacity of 31 beds, 10 bassinets, and a standing staff of 6 doctors This fully equipped modern hospital took the place of the Millinocket Gen eral Hospital which was in charge of Dr. Ernest T. Young, and the late Dr Martin Grumley. As far back as 1910 a private hospital was maintained by the late Dr. Charles Bryant. f ' nl' :-' :-'2:it. ' 'L'.
