Prior to the year 1901 the re was no town organ 1zat1on On May 2 1901 appropriations were made for Municipal purposes cluding a building serving both Grammar and High School this burned on November 13 1921 A course of study was a dopted and schools opened w1th George W Snow as Principal and George W Stearns Superintendent In 1907 a wooden school was built on Oxford Street In 1914 a modern brick school was erected on Aroostook Avenue In 1919 four rooms were added to the Oxford Street School In 1922 23 the George W Stearns High School containing twenty four rooms was constructed Tlns was one of the most up to date school in the State of Maine In 1926 the gymnasium was completed and has played an important role in the recreational 11fe in the commtuuty In 1931 another school was built on the site of the former Millinocket High called the Katahdin Avenue School This was completed with eight class rooms and a capacity of 320 pupils In 1938 funds were raised among Catholics for the building St Martin of Tours School which was erected 1n the rear of the church on Maine Avenue Twelve years later, in 1951, the first class of ten students was gradu ated from the High School. In 1941, an auditorium seating more than 1200 people was added to Stearns High School. A General Shop Course was start ed at this time. A bus was purchased to transport students who had been previously conveyed by private busses. In 1943, the Oxford Street School was closed, and later the build 1ng was turned over to the V. F. W. In 1954, our latest building, the Granite Street School, was thorough ly equipped for all modern school purposes, and is a credit to the town officials. l gf f 1 f 2 9.
