Holy Mother Church has always encouraged sports as a means of en- hancing the body as a masterpiece of God and the temple of the Holy Ghost. Pope Pius Xll has often praised the physical and moral value of organized sports programs for youth. His immediate predecessor as Holy Father, PiusXl, epitomized the Christian attitude toward sports when he said to a large youthful assembly: I bless with all my heart your games and amusements. I approve of your gym- nastics, for these pastimes will keep you from the idleness which is the mother of every vice, and because friendly contests will be for you the symbol of emulation in the practice of virtue. No statement better summarizes the moral significance of sports in the Christian plan for care of bodily health. ln stressing the importance of organized athletics, it is neces sary to inject a warning note. Over emphasis on sports, on the part of the individual or of the school, is detrimen- tal to the moral significance of worthwhile recreation.
