K f , - H31 In Memoriam We dedicate the 1955 MARKSMAN to the memory of Frank E. Mosher who was for 13 years the re- spected Head of the St. Mark's French Department. Mr. Mosher, along with wife, Hugette a member of the S.M.U. faculty and their son, Bill, an outstand- ing student at St. Mark's lost his life in a tragic auto- mobile accident in August of 1954. p Mr. Mosher was respected by all who knew him, both for-his ability as a teacher and his thoughtful- ness as a councilor. His quiet, kindly manner and his deep insight admirably equipped him for his station in life. Those of us who knew Frank Mosher may judge ourselves fortunate, for a man of his calibre is but rarely seen. FRANK L. MOSHER As schoolmasters appraise their graduating classes, they tend to isolate the signal characteristics of a whole group . . . and remember this class for its fine scholar- ship, or that one for its strong leadership, or another for its contribution to sports and activities. ' The Class of 1955 will have special honor, in the faculty mind, for certain personal triumphs of individual boys who, since they came to St. Mark's, have made long advances towards a condition of readiness for adult life, which few years ago seemed doubtful of achievement. A growing insight of their triune obligation . . . to their God, to their fellow men, to themselves . . . has brought to pass this good fruition of latent gifts that now should mature in service, the loftiest function of educated men. For by curious paradox, our only durable or valid happiness will accrue from willing subservience to a body of disciplinesg spiritual, social and intellectual, in that order of precedence. At the head and cornerstone of them all is our common Creator. cui servire est regnare To serve Whom is to reign. R 3.2t..0aoLnih JM THE HEADMASTER ROBERT H. They began by taking over the school paper at the close of last year and during this year have made it one of the most popular aspects of school life. Besides this the Juniors have been well represented in all major sports: football, basketball, soccer, and baseball. They have also held their own in the academic field with at least three Juniors always appearing on one of the honor rolls. Two members of the class took an active part in the Student Council, and others were represented in the choir, glee club, and band. With this excellent record behind them the school can be sure of a commendable senior class for the coming year. First row, left to right: Scurry, Christian, Adams, Henry, Moore R., Gay, Hedge. Second row: Murray, Rudman, Mr. Caldow, King, Pearcy. The Sophomore Class 0. The Class of '57 is well represented in all school activities. We are fortunate to number among our members the holder of the Upper School's highest academic hon- ors, an array of Honor Roll habitues, a number of bandsmen and a solid corps of athletic award holders. This year's outstanding class activity was the traditional Sophomore Dance. The French Night Club motif . . . beautifully executed by a committee of mothers ably assisted by an eager group of second year men . . . drew high praise from all. If the past academic year is indicative, in any respect, of things to come, We may look forward to a highly successful future. I g , Left to right: Schoeneman, Rife, Yancey, Fleet, Tygrett. Second row: Burrow, Hazelwood, Evans, McLean, Creenhall. Third row: Fields, Swan, Mr. Neville, Denning, Spencer. Fourth row: Gutter- sen, Brown, Crawford, Lane. The Freshman Class The class of 58, as eighth graders, gave evidence of greatness in many fields of endeavor: flj by winning the Annual Field Day, Q21 by scoring a record number of points in Field Day Competition, C31 by organizing its own end-of-the-year ban- quet, and Q4-J by publishing its own class paper. Now, as freshmen, under the able leadership of its class officers, the class of '58 has won the respect not only of the faculty but even of other classes. The freshmen already have won more than their share of varsity letters in the four major sports, they have placed many of their members on honor rolls, they have solidly supported all school activities. The biggest class in school, the ninth grade hopes to be the best. If this school year is any indication, the class of '58 promises indeed to fulfill its charge Hto set records of academic success, school loyalty, and athletic prowess that will last for many, many yearsf' First row, left to right: Jeter, Smith, Carr P., Childers, Foxworth, Williams, Higgins. Under the competent direction of Mr. Norman Blake, our new choirmaster, activities began with choral evensong held on alternate Sundays. Following this, the choir filled many engagements in churches throughout Texas. During the first half of the year, the choir visited the Northway Christian Church and the Church of the Incarnation. On December 17, they left on a tour of churches in West Texas and New Mexico, singing the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. As in previous years the Ceremony of the Boar's Head, with its traditional pro- cessions and carol singing was celebrated at the home of Mr. Neil Mallon, one of the trustees of the school. The highlight of the spring term came on March 23, when the choir presented a recital of selections they had sung throughout the year. JJ The Instrumental Music Department The Instrumental Music classes made greater progress than ever before, especially in general interest and numbers. Beginning in the Lower School, instrumental groups included the First Grade Flutaphone Players, who also learned songs to sing and play on several instruments, the Second Grade String Orchestra, the Third and Fourth Grade Orchestra, the Middle School Orchestra, the Concert Band, the Dance Band, and several training classes. There was also an enthusiastic Faculty Beginners, class, some of our dads dusted off the old horns and came out to join the fun. Several recitals, which included a number of Mrs. Epstein's piano pupils, concerts, and other appearances of our musicians gave the cause a boost. The still new Music Building has overflowed with applicants for practice or instruction at all times of the day. GMI Anyone for Crusades? How gone can you get! For me . . . Upper School Boarders This year the boarding department of the school has had its face lifted. Students and faculty alike were very much impressed by the new Checkerboard tile floor, the newly painted rooms, the new water cooler, and the new Commons Room furniture. The Mothers' Club, moreover, has refurnished our Commons Room with better lighting, a new ping-pong table, and easy chairs. Eagerly anticipated were the planned activities of the boarding students. These activities included football games, Fair Day, skating parties, Middle School dances, and Upper School visits to Pygmalion, Theater '54-'55, and the Mural Room of the Baker Hotel. A most welcome innovation in school life was the later hour for Sunday morning breakfasts. First row, left to right: Chaplain Thomas, Mr. Foote, Dickinson, Mrs. Fulton, Mr. Dunbar. Second row: Swindell, Gray, McDade, Gibbard, Cureton, Sweeney, Oliver, Koch. Absent: Lea. Middle School Boarclers The hoarding department has representatives from New Mexico and Mississippi, as well as Texas . . . and one boy is from Mexico, another from Colombia. There are eighteen Upper Schoolers, nine Middle Schoolers, and two Lower Schoolers. Day students occasionally become transient boarders and generally like the ex- perience of boarding. In addition to the House Mother, Mrs. Fulton, the housemasters include Messrs. Foote, Dunbar, Nelson, and Connolly and Chaplain Thomas. How can a guy be so smart? Following the opening kick-off, the Lions scored on the third play from scrimmage. Behind brilliant blocking, halfback John Adams swept right end for 80 yards and a touchdown. lVloore's conversion attempt was wide. In the first half the light, smooth-working Meunster team found big holes in the St. Mark's defense to score three first-half touch- downs. The St. Mark's team made sizable gains on the ground, but each time penalties set them back, stalling their drives. The second half proved to be quite different. St. Mark's had corrected their mistakes and held the Red and White scoreless for the remainder of the game. Thwarted on scoring threats the Lions counted late in the fourth quarter on a fifty yard punt return by fullback J im Aston. Bob Cutler, Felix Goodhue, Raysh Aldredge, Ken Kaufman, and Hugh Moore all shined defensively. Handicapped from the start by the terrible heat and oppressive humidity, the Lions played a spiritless game. After the opening kick-off the Lions found the going rough. Their ground game 'was bottled up by a hard charging Lutheran line. The Lions' passing, however, showed great promise with fullback Jim Aston connecting repeatedly on quick passes to ends Ken Kaufman and Hugh Moore. ln the second half the unpolished St. Mark's defense jelled to hold the powerful Lutheran running attack to two touchdowns. This display of determination greatly heartened the coaches of the badly under-manned St. Mark's eleven. Guard FOXWORTH End MURRAY Tackle PICKENS Back SWAN Tackle Playing on their own field in the drizzling rain, the St. Mark's Lions lost a heartbreaker to the Buckner Home Hornets. The first half was highlighted by goal-line stands made by both teams. Neither team's offense could function effectively in the slippery mud, hence the score at half-time was 0-0. As a result of a blocked kick the Lions found themselves backed up to their own goal early in the third quarter. 'Holding the op- ponents to three yards on three plays, the Lions put up another tremendous goal-line stand, but on the fourth down the Hornets managed to power the ball over the line by a scant three inches. The Lions retaliated beautifully by shaking fullback Jim Aston lose around right end, who behind sharp blocking scampered 65 yards for a touchdown. The middle of the line headed by Pat Henry, Raysh Aldredge, and Felix Goodhue opened a hole to out Aston into the end zone for the extra point and a 7-6 lead. Much to our disappointment the visitor pushed across the winning touch- down late in the fourth quarter. , 5 'IUZTJLBYYG ,'4f'5fK.Zi,w,1, i:' ffl?5'-fx'f-'I1i'f-4-Milli'nil?-WLSZIW5f'f f'filf!WM'Wi'7'7 ff3Q?713f'f?wEi':-V ffjf-'7lz'Si1tPf5i7fl-'filyivl9'WL4!75-W5-ff?.i,'fifx, W- 2 -H354-nvv- i -? f:4i'1fL 716' W-W-1if51',3Q:'L'1 Luk-Q swf d!1f?f'W1Q:5-lui 9 yi? : Q '- :m..s,s..,zf.,1.t,L ,.,,.4-.7lsl:.,'w-...,.,t.- .7 i,:.f.-.f..w.,,-N..4m..4..f . .series ,...,i,-ki.,.,,', It,,4W.,-,i.f.,.ig,,,.,w.5 ,im...Q-ww.-mfe7.+,,f...r ,.4,4..7r, -my W w,w7.fiw4,...n.f, fy . , Q Q33 .awgfq-.4'ftwyefswe-' 1.-,mi7-5,g.1reYaL3fsg3a.a,,wz.,:.fL...',a J H.. 11aww-x1.getf,a-ngessim-Ham.wituw, '.1.-,-:i7.M..+-gm. With lots of spirit still left, the Lions stormed back for two touchdowns in the third quarter to almost catch the Ranchers. Fullback Jim Aston tossed to end Hugh Moore for the first touchdown. Following the kick-off and a Rancher fumble, tailback John Adams skirted left end on a fine run for 65 yards and the second Lion tally. From there the score stood at 20-12 until the closing minutes of the game when Boy's Ranch scored twice on long passes, leaving the final score 34--12. Joel Hedge, John Foxworth, and Felix Goodhue were outstanding on defense. Pat Henry, Jim Boren, Jimmy Childers, and Hugh Moore played well on offense. MAYFIELD Guard R. Unable to cope with the larger St. Stephen's eleven, the Lions went down to de- feat in a 39-7 game. St. Mark's was unable to muster a sustained drive until late in the fourth quarter when Raysh Aldredge, replacing injured Jim Aston, tossed to Ken Kaufman on the St. Stephenis 25 yard line. On the next play Aldredge passed to Hugh Moore, who went over for the only Lion score of the afternoon. The extra point try was good. The highlight of the game was perhaps the way in which Aldredge took over Aston's post and played so well thereafter. Other outstanding players included Good- hue, Henry, Pickens, Reimer, and Cutler. St. Markfs defensive play was sharp and held Casady to one touch- down before the first quarter. In the second quarter, despite numerous goal line stands, Casady scored twice. In the second half, both teams displayed their hot tempers and the loss of Moore and Kaufman tore a hole in the Lions' defense. Passes and short gains sparked the St. Mark's offense however, and the Lions rested on Casady's ten yard line as the final gun sounded. I , .ygyykzhm ,Sic K5pE:Hv:,m,1m A I ., .P it Y., MW! St. Mark's closed its 1954 season against its traditional rival, St. John's of Houston. Although the game ended in a defeat, it was much closer than the score indicated and many seem to think that it was the best game played by the Lions all season. Trailing 7-0 early in the game, end Hugh Moore lattareled to tailback Ken Kauf- man who scored only to have the play nullified. From then on the Rebel defense held and the game appeared to be a rout as St. John's jumped to a 14-0 lead. On the first play after the kick-off, Ken Kaufman rambled 70 yards for a score behind beautiful blocking. The score read 14--6 but St. .lohn's scored again to keep its two touchdown lead. Again Kaufman scored on an 85 yard jaunt up the middle un- touched. St. John's piled up its lead and going into the fourth quarter the scoreboard read St. John's 33-St. Mark's 12. With the ball on their own 4 yard line, the Lions scored behind Kaufman's third T.D. St. ,lohn's scored once more before the end of the game. MARK'S BASKETBALL 1954--55 The St. Mark's Lions ended the first part of the 1954--55 basketball season with a good record of 6 wins in 8 starts. Included in the Highlights of '54-U were decisive victories over Buckner's Highland Park Bn, and Muenster Sacred Heart. One of the top efforts of the Marksmen ended in an overtime loss to Lake Worth of Ft. Worth in the first game of the Everman Tourney. Leading the Lion scorers was Hugh Moore with a top point production of 37 against Avalon in the Italy Tourney. Forwards Ken Kaufman and John Adams con- tributed 14- points against Buckner's in addition to an outstanding floor game in the second encounter with the Hornets. Freshmen John Foxworth, Bob Thornton, and Jim Boren helped in the point production and improved each game. Richard Scurry, Plack Carr, Les Denning, Richard Burden, Bill Egan, Jimmy Williams, Bob Pickens, Kenneth King, and Dixon Christian showed promise in the Bw contests. Manager Houston Higgins usually had his hands full of basketballs and uniforms in caring for the team. The Lions faced tough competition in the early weeks of 1955 and won over a tough foe January 4 in Frisco, conqueror of Pleasant Grove in the -Cotton Bowl Tourney. The Marksmen showed top form in using their fast break to run up a 30 point margin over St. John's of Ennis, a team that later defeated our squad by 3 points. The varsity squad lost the services of Hugh Moore and Ken Kaufman after mid- term and lost several days of practice due to virus and colds during the month of January. Unable to overcome these obstacles, the inexperienced Lions took their losses in the remaining games of the season. The Lions were defeated by Lutheran, Casady, and Friendswood in the ATP's tourney in Houston to end the season with a record of 7 Wins and 8 losses on the regular schedule and I win against 5 losses in tournament play. MARK'S-2 CASADY-0 St. Mark's opened its 1955 soccer season against The Casady School on their home field. The game was played A in a steady downpour which proved a handicap to both teams. St. Markie kicked-off and on their first drive re- ceived a corner kick. Tom Gay kicked a beautifully placed ball in front of the goal and Jose Uricoechea headed it into the net. For the remainder of the half St. Mark's skill and aggressiveness dominated the play, but the Lions could never put one into the net. Midway of the second half on a stirring fast break center forward Jose Uricoechea blasted one past the Casady goalie which wrapped up the scoring. This first game was a good in- dication of St. Mari-Us amazing. hustle and spirit. A fullback with more skill than most linemen ST. MARK'S-1 DALLAS CHIROPRACTORS-1 St. Mark's met the Dallas Chiropractors, a city club, at Exall Park. This team proved to be bit stiffer competition and also St. Mark's was somewhat off their game. The game was an evenly played match until ,lose Uricoechea broke loose on his famous fast break to score all alone. In the second half, St. Mark's missed several good chances to wrap up the game. The 4'Chiropractors scored late in the second half on a corner kick followed by a scramble in front of the goal, when the ball seemed to bounce in. The game ended in a tie, a true indication of how the game went. J IM HOOKER Most improved player on the team. Here starts that unbeatable spirit. JIM CHILDERS ST. MARK'S-3 ALLEN ACADEMY-1 St. Mark's got revenge and won their most satisfying victory of the season when they played Allen in the mud and freezing rain. St. Mark's opened the scoring when Jose slipped one past the goalie. Allen retaliated on a nicely placed kick into the corner of our goal. When the second half opened St. Mark's seemed to be a greatly inspired ball club. Soon the out-come of the game be- came apparent. ,lose scored perhaps the most beautiful shof of the season when, with his hack to the goal, he kicked the ball over his head and over the surprised goalie into the goal. St. Mark's elation was indescribable. Later, wing Tom Gay received a pass in the clear and scored for St. Mark's. The crowd went wild! George Swan played an outstanding game in the goal making almost impossible stops. This victory alone made the sea- son a success. Goalie-Baiter ST. MARK'S-3 BREMOND HIGH SCHOOL-0 The Lions repaid Bremond for their win a week ago. This was accomplished by Jose's three goals. Very soon after the game started he received a corner kick from Tom Gay and put the ball into the net. Later in the half the Lions took advantage of a break, as ,lose scored a penalty kick. Midway of the second half he scored the last goal on a pass from left wing, Ross Reimer. The score was by no means an adequate indication of the Lions' complete domination of play. First year half Joel Hedge and Jim Hooker relieved Bob Cutler of his year-long, fine defensive play, as they both played outstandingly. BILL BURROW Say, that little fellow's pretty good. Giving the second string some experience. ST. MARK7S-4 DALLAS CHIROPRACTORS-2 By dint of a very successful season, St. Mark's for the first time in its history of soccer, was allowed to en- ter the State Tournament. ln our first game we met the Dallas Chiropractors. The opponents took an early lead on a series of good passes and a good shot into the goal. This advantage seemed substantially safe until the start of the second half. The rejuvenated line struck like lightning. Jose Uricoechea scored twice on passes from Childers and on a fast break. Ross Reimer, playing an exceptional game, scored once by bulling his way in to the goal and again on a pass from Aldredge. The stunned Chiropractors managed to tally again before the end of the game. ST. MARK'S-I NATIONAL SECURITY LIFE-3 Overtime In a game witnessed by the largest crowd ever to attend a St. Markls game the Lions met bitter defeat in the semi-finals of the State Tournament. Cars ex- tended from one end of the field to the other and spec- tators, who cheered for us throughout the match, lined the side of the field. The players were greatly encour- aged by this and appreciated it beyond words. With a very strong wind in their faces, the Lions held the opponents to one goal in the first half. After intermission, the wind to their advantage, the home team controlled the ball for all but a few seconds of the second half. We missed scoring opportunities time after time. final- ly Uricoechea took a pass from Aldredge and scored from in front of the goal.
