We arrived in the fall of 1985 and before we knew what was happening, they loaded us onto a bus and sent us to Mt. Manadnok, in the first of many organized events we ' d be subject to during the next four years. On Groton night, while we hauled the captains to the bonfire, we ran into a ditch and unfortunately (He, He, He) the captains fell into a puddle of mud, sending terrified III formers fleeing in all directions. The dorm life in our little 111 form havens, on either side of route 85, ran as any other normal year, with usual torment from our VI form prefects (perhaps still holding a grudge from Groton night). Berzansky and Cutler were almost tarred and feathered when the VI form found their uncensored edition of the face book. During our last night in Coe House, we sent Stauff on a mission to find Jeremy Meltzer in the other hallway, both ol whom returned to find a massive wall of cushions and shaving cream. This was obviously too much for Mr. Garfield, who resigned as Coe dorm master after only one year with us. Alas, IV form came and we were no longer tread upon by everyone. Both returning and new IV formers alike, all got to meet each other on a beach, somewhere m Rhode Island, where a small group of devoted hackers discovered the wonders of the Hacky-Sack. Those of us lucky enough to be in Sawyer House had a great time with Rob Schmidt and his tormenting roommate from the South, Win Hartley. Mr. Danzigger kept us under close watch with room restriction almost every night (although Chris Tyler did manage to sneak some cookies and magazines out of his apartment) while Mr. Tabrisky just asked us: Guys, what the hell. ' ' harly on in the year, Ted Lyman was removed from the community, when he was caught out of his dorm, trying to make one last kill for the infamous school-wide game of Killer. Tim, on the other hand, defied the odds and avoided the repeated attempts of the SDC to remove him. As our form settled into the year, certain people like Marc and Robin excelled in their sports, while on the other side of the spectrum. Mo was cut from JV squash and forced to play Jerry Ball. By the time spring arrived we were looking forward to being V formers, but we engaged in one last fling of pure fun. at the V form dance, where Fuller, who was so excited to be there, fell through the scenery, while the rest of us threw pretzels and soda at each other. We arrived next fall looking forward to yet another year of good times, however we soon came to realize we had a great deal of things to worry about, usually in the form of the college process, achievement tests and the SATs (and more SATs and more . . . ) We took a wonderful form trip with our new advisors, Ms. Desprez and Mr. Acampora to Newport for a shopping spree and a cultural tour of the city. The only thing we didn ' t think about was that it was Sunday and raining outside. Still, the year progressed, and some of us discovered the joys of the new campus; mainly hacking after study hall in the Ritz and staying up all night for physics roller coaster labs, and much more. Spring came to St. Mark ' s and so did outer space with our own original, amazing incredible V form dance. Mr. Acampora and Ted Bovey showed us their amazing climbing skills by scaling the ceiling of Benson auditorium, while the rest of us wandered around painting flourescent stars on everything in sight and wondering how on eanh we ' d finish it all before the dance began. The fall of 1988 and what we had waited three years for finally came. VI FORM. However, before we could settle in, we were rounded up for just one more trip, this time for a weekend of rough, country livin ' up at Brantwood Camp in New Hampshire. While there, we cooked meals for each other, shared shacks, and had a nice, quiet time around the campfire. Our stay there would not have been the same without the marvelous marshmailow fight between Tim Smith and the entire form and, of course, Bogart ' s hilariously amusing story of the candy bars ( On the corner of 5th and Clark . . . ) We welcomed our new headmaster Mr. Mabley (and showed how attentive we were in school meeting) by relocating his office to a more central location, namely Forbes Center. Although, we ' ve finally gotten used to all of our new found privileges, not one of us can deny that life is much better without study hall. Looking back on our four years here at St. Mark ' s we can be proud to say that we truly never let our schooling interfere with our education. 15 16 T 17 yMiiHi Ic? 10 «( «V ' -.M 4 W 1. Dear Mr. Yung, Mr. Pectus, and the future girls soccer team of 1989, We just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed the season and to wish you good luck next year. Although we know that most of us were sucking wind in the beginning of the season trying to catch up to Mr. Yung on those early morning runs, we promise that we faithfully ran our four laps every day. We ' ll always remember Mr. Yung ' s httle jig before the games, even though they usually went too fast for the cheers. Hopefully the newly formed tradition of giving out awards at the end of the season will successfully continue! Good old Fritz will never be able to produce another winning season. This was our motivation. Aided with a little luck, the St. Mark ' s squad compiled a 9-3-3 record. Special, rigorous training techniques invented by Mr. Wiedergott turned a bunch of basketball and hockey players into a wicked Euro soccer machine. Marc Berzansky, the captain of this unit, led the team with his style of finesse play. Others like Hugh O ' Donnell and Marshall Farrer just used their intimidating bulk to scare opposing penalty kickers into missing A little thanks should go out to the St. Paul ' s goalie who showed a true lack of discipline. Another special thanks should go out to Mr. Dehler for getting us in shape tor the Belmont Hill game, then leading us on to victory with his strategic change ot game plan (thanks, Hugh). In the same game Jason Fuller put in a tremendous goal which somehow squeaked by the goalie, the goal was set up by a so-so assist from Brett Paredes We won t mention Thayer, we still aren ' t quite sure if it actually occured. The rwo highlights ot our season had to be the last second heroics of Brett Paredes against Milton on parents weekend and the tremendous win at Groton. Ten seconds on the clock and down by one goal Topher Nutso Willis goes down with a leg injury and St. Mark s is on its way to losing its first place position that it shared with Milton. The coach gives Mike (He-Man) Cohen the call. Berzannsky throws it in, Tyler tips it to Eric Cressman who passes to Paredes for the goal. No time left and mothers and fathers freaking out and slapping each other with exuberance. Milton cries in frustration: Winners never quit, quitters never win Ending our season on a high note, a team of seniors led by Eric Cressman. overcame a 2-1 deficit at halfiime, and went on to a 4-2 victory over Groton betore a crowd ot hundreds. Surpassing much prc-season criticism, St. Mark ' s compiled a more than respectable record. Thus, we often lost before we even stepped on the mat. Yet we were able to overcome this handicap and win as a team. Individually, with Teven of u! being returning varsity wrestlers we gave many of e better te s in the league a tough fight. Doshik Wood, at 1031bs proved to be a quick learner, as d d Mike Donovan and heavyweight Alex Dennis. When Mando Prado -turned, he added experience to the lighter classes. Our middle weights were as strong as any in the league and they were led by Captain Derek Pieper. Following him came Thor Benand r, BU WFerriabough, Carlos Ortiz, and Ted Bovey. But with Caty Storey recruited to squash at the Number three position, Bliss Summers, Kathy Kim and Alexis MuUm from the top of J.V. at numbers four and five, and seniors Aubrey Borland and Leslie Allen at seven and eight, we closed the season with an overall record we could be proud of. A smog of bovine indifference pervaded the mmds ot all (except for our talwart pillar of eternal optimism, Captain Chns O ' Brien) regarding these thrashings. But as of now, we look to Nobles, that squash dynamo, to provide the sole light of victory at the end of our long and gloomy tunnel. • , ■ ■ This is not to say that we have not had a good time. Laughs were provided by JUKE, who, refusing to bow to the wishes of Coach Floyer and Chris O Bric-n. and renouncing traditional squash etiquette; obstinately insisted [ rearing pink boxers which he had purchased from fellow team member Winfield Hartley. JUKE was not only an object of laughter for his teammates, but his talic haircut amused our opponents and delighted spectators. The team ' s backbone, Wmfield Hartley and Zebulon Inge, instilled in the team a strong sense squash fashion with their Bermuda shorts and colored T-shirts. Chris O ' Brien, Captain and number one playc-r, completed the picture with some semblance of skill. Four years ago from Texas far The Bay State Called our Favorite LONE STAR. So off as a Freshman he did embark To start his studies at the school of St. Mark. It was a challenge at first to fit in the mold But the tradition was there for him to uphold. So that meek little lion who entered the tray Will roar with great pride on graduation day. The years have been good and the Friendships true. You will always remember the white and the blue. As the future is faced with heads held high May there always be a sun-filled sky.
