Football Flashe 1950 September, 1950, Coach Dick Frazier greeted an odd bewildered crew of some twenty or thirty St. Maries students, bid- ding their way to a climatic football sea- son. The sweat of eager heroes dripped freely in practice, but the aches and pains slowly dissolved and the '50 season began. September 15 brought a confident and cocky Wallace eleven to St. Maries to prove their superiority over the River wharf boys. The bruising Miner clan was rather dismayed and sur rised when a light, green-clad force Eowled them over and snagged a 12 to 0 decision on running and passing power. The line -up was set- tled with ewev Spooner over the ball, Bonds, Dick Clark and Dimico alternating at uards, Marzulli and Croson at tackle ant? Quane and Emerson, the wingmen, Jacot at blocking back, Gibson and Shi py, half backs and Fish and Epler switching at fullback. Potlatch spun into St. Maries onSept. 22 trying desperately to overcome their 6 to 6 tie of '49, but were out-classed con- siderably. The spirit of the Jacks climbed after the Wa-Hi game and theytoppled the Loggers Z1-13 using a successfu aerial attack. The Sand oint-St. Maries affair was a duplicate of Sxeir '49 affair and the Jacks were stubbornlypushed in the sod time and again. When the night lights were exting- uished, the visitors bore a 19 to 0 victory into their locker room. The Priest River game was acom lete turn of events for the Mariettes and, the Green and White gridmen spran a 26 to 7 defeat on the visiting Spartans. iocal fans again saw an aerial power that had slipped in the Sandpoint game and it capatilized the ame completely. The Sp1inters from the Bench who saw action in this giame were Elsen, Weinmann, Bill Clark, annatter, Pendall, St. George, Seifert, Swofford, Van Brunt, Hayden and Don Spooner. Friday, the 13th, completely took St. Maries unaware when, on t e Kellogg rid- iron, the Wildcats clawed and dug ail to 0 rave for the bullied Lumberjacks. The dual axe of the Jacks never cut and the less remembered of this lgame, the better. Eager to get bac on the win column, the Lumberjacks jumped on a supposedly weak Colfax Bulldog team. The wiley pups, however, pushed three touchdowns through the mud and dumped the Green and White to a 19 to 7 defeat. The Bonners Badgers played host to a despairing River eleven but defeated them 19 to 13 in an air of sleet, rain and snow. The Armistice Day classic was on the top of the list. With it, three footbal1Sen- iors saw their last prep action. The open- ing kick-off was taken by a Viking back and carried 93 yards for the first C. D.'A. tally. It looked like a rout but the Green and White sprang back and passed their way to a tie score of 6-6. Not to be denied, the Vikings us ed the fourth quarter and anun- balanced, spread formation to pass over the bewildered Jacks for another 6 points and the bacon of the day. The River team out-fought and out-classed the Lake City but gained only a moral victory. CHEER LEADERS i Donna Taisey, Patsy Grigsby, Lilas Marquette Page Sponsor-ST. MARIES GAZETTE-RECORD
