G R A D E S I X They did come! They did see! They have conquered, as our bold Hungarian soldiers launched their cavalcade towards the north of beautiful Hungary and claimed what rightfully belonged to them. Daily the radios send a tremor of resounding clashes of an unbe- coming war, but thanks be to God so far so good. Daily we follow- ed the current events and in imagination took part in the confer- ences held at Munich. We listened attentively to the words of our late Holy Father, Pius XI, pleading for peace.' First of all, it was Germany who took its possessions peacefully, all of us heaved a sigh of relief, and another of sadness as we watched a young na- tion reluctantly handing over the portion received just a little over twenty years ago. ' Czechs and Hungarians battle over border. The radio booms forthli Flashes and news screen! The newsboys scream! Our current events were busily scanned. Open and violent warfare on a small scale a- long the border between Hungary and Czechoslovakia. The fighting which took more than forty people on both sides, was over the bor- der which separates Hungary from that part of Csechoslovakia.known as Carpatho-Ukraine. We were busy with our maps, tracing and all that was necessary to study the demanded sections. Success! Hungary receives her portion back to her warm mother land. Beautiful strains of Hungarian marches and rapsodies filled the home- sick hearts with rejoicing and jubliee to think that once the beauti- ful accents of their mother-tongue is lipsed by the many thousands. We, American born children, do not understand the meaning of this hilarious rejoicing. But leaking into the twinkling eyes of our dear folks here in America, we could read volumesand volumes of what it means for them. r f . X .V .. . 1
