1908- 1957 UBILEE flVESVC Published By The Senior Class St. Margaret's Academy 1301 Linden Avenue North Minneapolis, Minnesota PM- To ARCHBISHOP WILLIAM O. BRADY, the seniors of the fiftieth graduating class of St. Margaret's Academy dedicate this, their golden anniversary DAYESYE in commemoration of his recent appointment as spiritual leader of the Archdiocese of St. Paul. In 1907, one of his predecessors, the MOST REVEREND ARCHBISHOP JOHN IRELAND, saw the founding of our school. And now, in this year of 1957, as ARCHBISHOP BRADY begins the work of his office, an important milestone has been reached by St. Margaret's. For half a century she has striven to uphold the ideals of young Catholic womanhood by teaching the principles of religion and their practical application to daily living. For fifty years she has striven to send her students out to take their places in society as informed and steadfast Catholics. 2 u FACULTY AND FRIENDS Faculty and Administration page 3 Freshmen Sophomores Juniors page 4-6 page 7-9 page 10-12 MAIN BUILDING Known in tho fashionable '80s as the McNair Mansion, home of a wealthy lumberman. Main was purchased from the Archdiocese of St. Paul by the Sisters of St. Joseph, along with the other two buildings on the estate, and became St. Margaret's Academy in 1907. A miracle of hard work and ingenuity went into its transformation from an elegant home, rich with handsome, carved woodwork, a graceful central staircase, tapestried walls, tiled fireplaces and a high-ceilinged, beamed ballroom on the top floor which could be reached by an olevator! The student body found, in the homey atmosphere of Main, offices, library, chapel, cafeteria, classrooms and reception rooms. THERESA'S BUILDING Formerly housing the stables and carriages of the McNair and Wilson families, St. Theresa's building was, until 1920, the headquarters of the elementary school, on the ground floor, and of the commercial department on the second floor. Until that year the commercial students formed a separote department and received special certificates. A large statue of St. Theresa of Lisieux occupies a niche in the entrance of the building, as special patroness of the youth within its walls. SENIORS OF '57 ELSIE CAMPBELL Class presidont 4 . . . Sophomore salesmanship of Forget-Me-Nots proved SMA's spirit of help your neighbor, for the Disabled American Veterans in September of 1954. Elsie Campbell, in junior year, lent her modelling abilities to help make a Contact style show a success, in the spring of 1956. SCHOOL ST. CECILIA'S BUILDING The Wilson family, related by marriage to the McNairs, owned the large red brick building adjoining the Main building, as well as the three-cornered park across the street, which they gave to the city, and which is now Wilson park. The home became St. Cecilia's building and housed the music and expression deportments with their studios, practice rooms, and a concert hall. The music department offered a special certificate. Later, an addition to the west end of the building made room for scionce laboratories, and a larger cafeteria, but St. Cecilia's is still called the music building and still resounds with the efforts of pianists in various stages of development. The arch of the porte-cochdrc which stood over the driveway of Main, is remembered by alumnae Marguerites of the closs of 1940, shown here in the uniform of that year. Main's manorial beauty is evident In the front porch which stood before the entrance from 1907 until 1950, ond wos the setting for the traditional graduation photo. The oldest alumna was Mrs. Charles Brennan, who died in March of this year. She graduated in 1887 from old Holy Angels Academy, and was a charter member of the Alumna Association. She wos a faithful attendant at every reunion until shortly before her death. SMA's Alumnao Association, founded in 1907, has grown to 2,000 members and includes the graduates of old Holy Angels. Its purpose is to uphold the ideals of Catholic womanhood, to support Catholic education, to assist SMA by continued loyalty and by scholarships to needy students. Members of the 1956-1957 Executive Board shown here are, Donna Busch ('52), Mrs. Ken Collins ( 33), Susan Meloche ('55), Kathryn Houlihan ('271, Mrs. Douglas Donald ('31), Diane Marked ('56), and Helen Stone t'50). Alumnae president, as they moke plans for the spring reception and dance honoring the graduates. 27 THE YEAR WITH CHRIST Traditional opening of the '56-'57 school year took place fittingly when SMA students offered it to God at 9:00 Mass on September 20, feast of St. Thomas of Villanova, at the Basilica of St. Mory. Through the kind offices of the Right Reverend Monsignor James M. Reardon, P.A., pastor, and his assistants The Rev. John M. Murphy and The Rev. Martin P. Fleming, the beauty and dignity of the Basilica serve as a setting for SMA's most important opening and closing exercises. Be Christ bearers Monsignor Reardon fold Marguerites in his sermon after offering Opening Mass. Marguerites meditate during their annual three-day retreot on November 19-21, under the direction of Rev. Oscar Winzeling and Rev. Joseph Kuncl We crown thee Queen, today. Students and faculty, carrying flowers honor Our Lady with the traditional procession and May Crowning in the lost week of Moy. The goal of four years at SMA, Graduation day, June 5th, finds the white-gowned seniors leaving the Basilica with their red roses and new diplomas PARENTS MEET Formal but friendly was the setting at the senior Golden Tea held February 25th in the Main building.
