Reardon on the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy, September 24, formally opened the school year. Pictured (left) are students entering the Basilica of St. Mary for Mass and praying in the Basilica interior. The initial dedication of the year is renewed in daily prayer before the altar of the Academy chapel (center). Ways of integrating religion and life engage Mary Con- nor, Carolyn Wilcox, Elayne Esterley, and Kay Kelly in a social problems panel and motivate Annette Barney, Carol Hosselo, Ardelle Nelson, Betty Clemens, and Harriet Heinen to examine Religion IV text books. During the annual retreat, October 8 to 10, the Reverend Howard Ralenkotter, CP, (above) helped upperclassmen develop a truly spiritual outlook, while the Reverend Francis Fleming (below) directed underclassmen. Miss Stephens, homemaking instructor, and Ethel Foy, student, welcome the panel of experts on the social life of beaux and belles. The eye has it for physical scientists-Mary Frances Devereaux, Carolyn Wilcox, Mary Rains, Sue Clinton, and Kotherine Kalvestran. Language, Literature, and Art Amicus est alter idem according to Cicero and to bookmarks designed by members of the advanced Latin class— JoAnn Fortin, Barbara Speltz, Mary Zeglen, Mary Clare McBride, Gerry O'Meara, Joann Berigan, Susan Schaub, Jo Ann Goblirsch, Mary McGraw, and Lucie Guillemette. Authors, Authors, Everywhere! agree Jean Gunderson and Mary Kay Church as they try to deside which English author might prove interesting enough for a research paper. More Matt with less art is what we need, say Ruth Raj-kowski, Barbara Knight, and Down Thomas as they attempt to paint in the absence of their instructor Miss Loretta Matt. In secretarial training, Kay Kelly slipsheets while Kay Murray handles the controls of the mimeograph machine; Connie Fudali takes dictation from the tape-recorder operated by Barbara Theisen and Mary Jane Kapuster. In an imaginary cafe on the Rue de la Poix, linguists— Jonel Pelletier, Sharon Kolhoff, and Ann Busch—order in French from garcons, Mary Ann Curran and Pat Schwartz. For their Pan-American program, Spanish students, Dorothy Hartman and Helen Swanson, practice a dance as Joan Byrnes, Elayne Esterley and Margaret Leigh clap to the music. The Wei I-Trod Stage At the one-act play festival held ot Cretin High School on November 8, Nancy Mollers, Margaret Cashman, Janel Pelletier, and Connie Fudali star in SMA's entry. Sacrifice in Brocade. In IT'S A MING, presented at SMA on February 15, Connie Fudali and Kay Murray conspire against eavesdropper Diane Moeglein. The Glee Club, accompanied by lorna Demarais, give a concert for a school assembly. Chemists—Mary Schwappach, Ellen Dufek, Rosemary Baron, Helen Katzmarek, and Kathryn Ditter—display posters made for an assembly on atomic energy. Solly Clinton, Ellen Dufek, Julianne Campion, Franie Sexton, and Sue Clinton model in a style show sponsored by Contact on March 3. Carol Schwaab, Contact leader, was in charge of the style show; she was assisted by Mary Kay Church and Kay Ditter. The Alumnae Association turned over proceeds from the Festival to the Academy for a scholarship fund and for school equipment. Mrs. Mary North and Mrs. Frank Murray were co-chairmen for the affair. St. Joseph, whose statue on the landing in Main is the center of Wednesday devotions, is the motivating force for much of SMA's spirit of charity. Sliu Time For Activity Special activities highlight the various seasons of the school year. Assembly Programs Convocations featured on March 4, singers, Nina Orla and Wayne Scott lupper left! on tour for the University of Minnesota Community Program Service and on October 29, Mary Louise Hickey, dramatic monologuist (center), who read Christopher prize ploy. The Velvet Glove. lUpper right Betty Clemens and Barbara Speltz persuaded the Reverend Theophane McGuire, C.P., to autograph his book Hunan Harvest, just after his talk of January 14 on The Eternal Triangle. With Indian tales and dances, James Longie, better known as Chief Blackbird, and his two children (right center), educated and entertained underclassmen on February 16. After the scientific program by General Motors on November 12, physical science students—Sylvia Kell, Sally Frost, and Sue Clinton (right center)—watch a special demonstration by Robert Tuck. Vocation Day Speakers Planned for seniors only. Vocation Day on April 15 emphasized prayerful consideration of states of life. The Reverend William Craddick, C.S.C. (left), discussed the religious life,- the Reverend Joseph Boglio (center) developed the topic of vocations in general. Mrs. William Carlson, who spoke on marriage and home-making, and Miss Agnes Keenan, who surveyed the single state, exchonged views at luncheon. The Reverend Leo Conners, M.M., with his Guatemalan pet, Ofelia, amused and instructed alumnae and seniors at the spring meeting May 6. The Reverend Howard Rolenkotter, C.P., retreat master for upperclassmen, chatted informally with seniors—Mory Judd, Kathryn Ditter, Rosemary Baron, Carol Schwaob, and Sally Clinton.
