MARGARET, QUEEN OF SCOTLAND, valiant woman and benefactor of the poor, we, the Senior Class, dedicate our 1948 DAYESYE and also . . . TO MOTHER MARY BERTRAND who has been the inspiring factor in inculcating the growth of the Christ-life in us, do we dedicate this book. She has been ever vigilant in holding to the course which will make us truly Christian women, and through her tireless effort she has succeeded in integrating our academic and extra-curricular activities with Christian philosophy. MHC A retace WE, THE SENIOR CLASS, have chosen the life of St. Margaret of Scotland as the theme for our book in an attempt to further the knowledge of her valiant life and to instill a greater devotion to her, our regal patroness. In reply to a letter to Scotland seeking information about St. Margaret, the Reverend David McRoberts, author of St. Margaret, Queen of Scotland, states: It is with very great pleasure I learn that St. Margaret is held in honor so far away from her own country. May the DAYESYE and St. Margaret’s Academy long prosper and spread the knowledge and love of St. Margaret. . .” •'Part One MARGARET - QUEEN oCeaderA Tart Two MARGARET - SAINT 3 (L outers 'Part Three MARGARET - TEACHER X earners Tart Four MARGARET - BENEFACTOR Sharers Waller Wary Eertrand Principal M.A., Catholic University Religion Sitter J ominica Procurator B.A., College of St. Catherine Silter Qerarcl Wajelfa Secretary, Bursar Holy Redeemer Academy Detroit, Michigan Sitter Syn ellct B.A., College of St. Catherine English Shier Jinn fauti me B.A., College of St. Catherine Typing, Shorthand Sitter Senicirdine M.S.Educ., University of North Dakota Art, English Sitter Cdfciritta B.A., College of St. Catherine Supervisor of Study Safer Wary Join Registrar M.S., University of Chicago Religion, Physics Wrs. MARGARET CENTERED about a burning love of God and His Church. This love inflamed the hearts of all who came in contact with her, husband and children, and the courtiers and common people under her rule. Not only did this zeal enable her to bring about reorganization in the Church but also spurred her to make beautiful craft work to be used in God’s house. She was well aware of the vital role the liturgy must play in the life of a militant Catholic and made this the focal point of her religious exercises. We at St. Margaret’s strive to follow her splendid example by entering into the spirit of the Church year. Each academic day begins with morning prayer, reading and reflection on the feast of the day. In tremendous trifles” such as prayer before class and devotions in honor of St. Joseph and Our Lady, visits on First Friday, Stations of the Cross and in memories like annual retreats and religion classes we, too, are becoming strong followers of Margaret-the Saint. Poge thirty-nin® MARGARET, TEACHER - earners UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ST. MARGARET, the Scottish court became a center of learning. Margaret, who had a great thirst for knowledge, invited scholarly priests from Europe to Scotland. She and her learned guests would sit by the hour conversing and debating over various theories. Oftentimes the result of these disputes was that these intellectual personages took their departure from the court with an enobled philosophy and a fund of newly acquired knowledge. St. Margaret also collected several scriptural books. Her favorite, the Gospel Book, she studied constantly with her penetrating intellect. Today we find that St. Margaret’s spirit still permeates surroundings wherever her patronage is sought. Here at school in our classes we are taught the important task of growing in the Christ-life, and we learn to correlate our knowledge of science, literature and the arts with our daily living in order to be articulate Catholics making functional our Christian philosophy of life. PoflO forty-sovon MARGARET, BENEFACTOR —Sharers O, GOD, WHO DIDST IMBUE the blessed queen Margaret with a spirit of singular charity towards the poor...” Thus the collect from the feast day of St. Margaret gives the motif for her life. Her confessor, Turgot, tells us that of all persons he has known she was the most devoted to works of mercy and almsgiving. She taught her husband, the king, and all the kingdom charity towards Christ in the person of the poor. Who shall find a valiant women?...She hath opened her hand to the needy, and she stretched out her hands to the poor.” We have found her in Margaret, Queen of Scotland. Therefore, motivated by the example of our patroness, we are encouraged to act in a similar pattern and to emulate her in contributing to the peace and happiness of friends in our everyday meetings. In our mission work, the basketball games, after school cokes, the school paper, and all of our spiritual, athletic, and social activities, we share in the charitableness of Margaret, Benefactor, by adding to the well-being of those about us. By our spirit, our good cheer, our kindnesses, we too can follow in the footsteps of the valiant woman.
