One year had passed, two roses now Were mine, and mine a cap of white Within my heart, there glowed a pride Known only to a student nurse, Could I turn darkness into light? Three roses, now, replaced three years, A pin of gold made dreams gleam bright And though I smiled, my tears showed through I'd made my hope reality Could I tum darkness into light? I am but one, with hands but two, I can not change the large world' s plight Yet there are many little ways, The least of which is just a smile I could turn the darkness into light, by Lynda Newell In Dedication We, the Senior Class of Saint Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing, proudly dedicate the 1966 ‘‘In Tenebris Lux’’ to Miss Carol Diller, Associate Director of the School of Nursing, Miss Diller has helped to bring an appropriate and inspiring beginning and end to our nursing education through her teaching of Fundamental and Professional Adjustments in Nursing. By the sharing of our sadnesses, our joys, our anxieties, our fears...we have become endeared to this administrator and have seen Miss Diller as teacher, as friend, as helpmate. To Carol Diller we dedicate this 1966 yearbook with love and respect for truly bringing us ‘‘from darkness into light. (p Sai I p eS oS Graduation June 2, 1966 The Cap and the Pin... Throughout the year, there were ac- tivities with the junior and senior students in Cleveland. In summer, 1966, they will continue at St. Luke's. Entrance to Kent State welcomes the St. Luke's Freshmen. Kent's rapidly expanding campus has many modern buildings. Kent Students relax in a dormitory lounge. When the freshmen leave Kent they will start their instruction in clinical nursing. Yet, others had walked this pathway; . . They had sought the light too, Young was I and unknowing, But willing-so willing to learn, Though my head was very full of dreams, . .With ideals my heart did burn. I would comfort them in their sadness; In pain they would come to me; With warmth would I smile; with tenderness touch From ill shadows they would be set free. So I took those first, faltering steps; My future seemed here and now. Yet for patients I was not caring, Only learning the why and the how, One day we defined Professional And mastered the making of a bed, But those old dreams seemed to be fading As other plans filled their stead Research, there was in English; The Kreb Cycle to learn for A P; A bus to catch in the morning, And at night a call - That s for me? Suddenly--quite suddenly--- The awaited time was here! In white I stood insecure, Feeling not courage--but fear Even with all my good intension The patient was hard to see Through the techniques of procedure And the instructor's opinion of me Some distance down the path I came, As I was faced with experiences new. And gradually, as my knowledge broadened, My perspective came to change too. Of life I saw the beginning In the tiny squalling child; Of life I saw the ending-- At times tragic, at times mild, I saw in most noble courage, Yet many were wrapped in fear, Others I met with wealth and pride While some wore poverty dear, Now I would not merely see With hands held fast at my side A gift of help was mine to give, As in the light I'd come to bide, by Robbie Haught 64 na a we ha ae AN SoS betta .
