To the Class of 1951: You are about to take your places in an exciting world. In that world you will find many ways of life and much confusion. You may wonder often just what pathways you should follow. Decisions in such matters rest with each of you and let us hope this will always be true. Yours is a heritage of individual initiative, individual enterprise, and individual freedom so long as the exercise of your rights doesn’t interfere with the exercise of similar rights on the part of your neighbor. Whenever the time comes that your decisions are dictated to you without recourse to any proper adjudicating medium instead of being formulated by you within the limits of good social behavior, you are not searching for trouble; you are in the midst of it. It is a great privilege to be a citizen of this great nation. It is the most sought after privilege in today’s troubled world. Let us strive to keep it so. We can’t afford to take our good fortune for granted. We must work unceasingly to perpetuate it. We must interest ourselves in civic affairs. We must do everything within our power to assure ourselves of good government. We must never forget that in our scheme of things, government was always intended to be the servant, not the master, of the people. Order your lives in a manner that will permit people to say of you that you are a good citizen of a great country. Sincerely, Frep G. CarTER, M.D. Superintendent Page Four

6 To the Members of the Class of 1951 When you entered the School of Nursing in 1948—only three years ago, many of the seniors at that time were members of the United States Student Nurse Cadet Corps and we were anticipat- ing that the needs of the country for nurses in the military services were met for many years to come. However, it now appears that the call is being renewed and the armed forces must have our assistance, and undoubtedly some of you will join one of the services. Not only do the Government agencies need our services but also do the people of all commun- ities—hospitals, homes and other places of employment. The education and experience which you have had the opportunity to have here has prepared you to take your place in a highly-valued profes- sion in these several areas. Not only nursing skill but devoted consideration for patients is necessary in order to fulfill the demands and meet the standards of the profession. Your families and the hospital have invested considerable money in your education, and you have devoted your energies and time over the past three years to attain the status of a graduate pro- fessional nurse. We are proud to have you graduate from this School and we trust that you will practice your profession with much happiness and satisfaction and always be proud of your Alma Mater. Sincerely yours, (Mrs.) Marion W. HALL Director, Department of Nursing Pcege SIx
