To the Class of 1951: You are about to take your places in an exciting world. In that world you will find many ways of life and much confusion. You may wonder often just what pathways you should follow. Decisions in such matters rest with each of you and let us hope this will always be true. Yours is a heritage of individual initiative, individual enterprise, and individual freedom so long as the exercise of your rights doesn’t interfere with the exercise of similar rights on the part of your neighbor. Whenever the time comes that your decisions are dictated to you without recourse to any proper adjudicating medium instead of being formulated by you within the limits of good social behavior, you are not searching for trouble; you are in the midst of it. It is a great privilege to be a citizen of this great nation. It is the most sought after privilege in today’s troubled world. Let us strive to keep it so. We can’t afford to take our good fortune for granted. We must work unceasingly to perpetuate it. We must interest ourselves in civic affairs. We must do everything within our power to assure ourselves of good government. We must never forget that in our scheme of things, government was always intended to be the servant, not the master, of the people.
