Linn. r n It was fifty years ago this year that a trainina school started in St.Luke's Hospital. We'rc proud of St. Luke's. It gives us a thrill, a surge of exultation to stateg Uwe re from St. Luke'sH. We can't boast of anything in ourselves alone. rogetnerzp the studentsg the superin- tendentsg the staffg have worked to give the institu- tion the background that puts pride in our statement HWe're from St. Luke'sU. , K, In the class of '42 ten states and Hawaii are represen- ted. First we chose 1St. Luke's ,end then UHappy Day,H St. Luke's chose us. It, was an exciting day in the fall of '39 when sixty bewildered girls cluttered the halls of the Hallett home--we were eager 'to become nurses. We were impatient. And now, we look back on the three years that have gone so fast and wonder at the short period spent together. We're reluctant to leave the friendships which will mean so much to us always-- the experiences which have taught us, the instructor s who have tolerated us, the good-times which we have hed vivid in our minds. But, we're proud to leave with our St. Luke's cap,-so thrillingly different, so defiantg so proud, with.our white pins with red crosses, so syns bolic, so dear to us. i And so it comes time for.the class of '48 to make place for the class of '45. We know they're capable of carry- ing on the torch for St. Luke's.. We sincerely hope that the training school will carry on for another half century and more. May we say in'repartee--THANK YOU, ST. My, were they surprised when they turned out to be Sairey Gamps. Well, that's neither here nor there. They started, and now they are nearly finished. August 30--1959, was the red 'fxc - letter day. After waiting for what seemed an eternity each and every one of the sixty lassies embarked uponi the thing of their life. One by one they arrived. HDear me, sitting in those . s gg nasty old hot class rooms and trying to answer questions we've never heard of. Guess we belong in the moron class instead of the gallant, glorious nursing profession.U However, with let- ters and food from home, pep talks and the WDO or dien atti- tude--on the poor probies trudged. Their first stream having been crossed, they were spurred to higher and mightier des- tinations. ' r Ringggsgsg--0Oh, that alarm...If only we could sleep five min- utes longer--can't see why in the world they start classes so early in the morning. Guess it's so we will have more time to attend more classes. High school was never like this. Don't see why we have to learn all these ,things before they let us work on the floors. Wish I hadn't stayed in the closet so long last night studying my chemistry. And to be interrupted so many times by those graduates turning off the lights was most annoying. I'll never learn all those bones and muscles. Can't see what good that is going to do us anyway. And Mrs. Chase-- she just isn't the least bit cooperative--oh well, Ifd rather take care of her than to try and clean. Honestly, there just isn't anything left to clean but those instructors seem to find a bit of dirt every place they look. Think they must har- bor a dirt pile in some dark cleset. For Freshmen it is inevitable end unfortunately is apt to rcoccur st ony moment in the Junior year, but rarely is seen in the Senior year. It may spread with greet rs- pidity, csusinf irreparable damage to normal, henlthy inclinations. The two stares of thissmnlady are: first, an acute period, the onset is rapid but soon nbntes after n month or so, becomes quiescent run- nin: into the second or chronic stgte. The acute stare may be recovnized by s tendency to self-consciousness --3 curious rinxlinn of hot and cold sensations in the vertebral re- r-e:. In rare cases n desire to out-shine and out-study each fellow-worker seizes tha victim with the hope that exoollinr will elevate ones food nunlities in the eyes of the internes. This reaction is most denser- ous, uno may drive the sufferer to insanity. The chronic stave in time produces n flushed complexion for the vic- tim due to continusl rise in blood pressure snd the rapidity of the heart beat. There has been known to develop e distinct lenninw toward Chgyne-Stokes respir A'-. tion in presence of his majesty, the Interns.
