jooffaf The dream of every high school lad is to make the varsity football squad and it was certaxnlv true ol St Lukes last fall ts thntv five voung men reported for pr tcttce at lXa tional Farm School Pennsylvania Although its record of two victories live defeats and one tie does not compare with that of last ye tr the 46 eleven coached bv Bob Curley will long be remembered as a lighting aggregat Jn Oakland Military -Xcademv and Mount Loretta were conquered Teams who scored over the Lucans were Immaculate Concep tion Pope Pitts Halsted Prep St Agnes and Good Council The contest with Dobbs Ferry resulted in a tie With the loss of backs Nelson Heddy injured during training and co captaln EEL? Iindy Scafuro injured in the hrst game Coach Cuilev experimented with numerous combtnittons and was finallv forced to enter the season with manv inexperienced fresh men who however showed much promise Ifive seniors donned their uniforms for the list time Bill Hopkins star center for the last two vears converted into 1 pile drtv mg fullback in the latter part of the season and co captained the gridmen along with Lmdv Sctfuro Xvhtle ln the forward wall the 4, squad will miss the scrappy fighting spirit of Red Ktrbv Bob Hamer and Alan Gould ing who were the main stands tn this years me Coach Curleys grldmen of 46 were a tc nn that dtsplav ed a creditable brand of foot ball that cven in defeat smiled as in victory At the start of this season Coach Curley fared well Thev advanced to the sectional had less than two weeks to form a team to ever had Plaving as many practice games as possible the team took shape with ohnnv ONe1ll the only team holdover from last vear av Kirby a transfer student from Saint Johns Nffickey Kirby Vince Toltsano lohn Caradonna Iiggs Turt and ohn NIcD0nald forming the varsity group The team started slowlv but hit its peak towards the second half of the season The scorlng twms co captains john O Neill and av Kirby who scored 486 and 595 points respecttvelv were the mam factors in the team s success -Xblv backed bv the other mem bers of the team and reserves these bovs led the team to third place tn the Bergen Passaic Catholic Conference The loss of Vince Tollsano was a bad break to the Lucan cagers early in the sea son Vince tlwavs a driving ballplaver and a sparkplug was bedrldden the whole season after starring in the Salnt Patrick s game All believed Vince would have meant vlctorv in manv of Sunt Lukes close defeats In post season tournaments the Lucans final of the State Tournament only to lose allv became the State Champions In the Eastern Prep School Tournev the Purple and lVhtte advanced to the semi finals with victories over Hacklev Prep and Saint Nlarv s of Katonah Thev dropped a close 3, 35 game to the New Stork School for the Deaf 'Ihe Luc ms however came back to win the semi fm tlists consolation game from Rom ford Prep to cop the third place trophy It would be hard to forget the scrappy umor varsity team of this year lV1nners of 22 out of 26 games these bovs won the untor Varsttv Championship of the Catholic Con ference 'I he diligent work generous selfsacrifice and unlimited time spent by Coach Curley and our Athletic Director Father Rembisz will tlwavs be remembered and appreciated bv the team and the students Hith all but one varsitv man returning and with the champion untor Varsity team to inspire them we are sure that Saint Lukes will cnjov unusual success tn basketball next vear I . .b J. . , . . .
