If commemorafed sevenfy-five fruifful years in which fhe parishoners of Sainf Luke's have enioyed fhe benefifs of pracficing fhe Cafholic religion. A Diamond Jubilee gives a church a special disfincfion. Many have affained fhe honor of a golden or silver jubilee, buf an exceedingly small proporfion have affained fhe singular disfincfion of celebrafing fheir sevenfy-fiffh anniversary. To commernorafe such an auspicious occasion fhe pasfor, Fafher Maloney, arranged an imposing series of appropriafe ceremonies and celebrafions for fhe week of Ocfober I6, l939. A solemn High Mass, af which His Excellency fhe Mosf Reverend Archbishop Walsh presided, was sung on Monday morning by Fafher Maloney, assisfed by Reverend John J. Dougherfy, deacon, and Reverend Rayner Bradshaw, sub-deacon. Also presenf were His Excellency, fhe Mosf Reverend William A. Griffin, Auxiliary fo fhe Archbishop of Newark, forfy monsignori and priesfs, and a large number of religious Sisfers from various parfs of fhe sfafe. lmmediafely following fhe Mass, fhe clergy and Sisfers were guesfs of a banquef given by Fafher Maloney, in fhe affracfively decorafed sfudy hall, and audiforium of fhe school. Confinuing fhe fesfivifies of fhaf day, a banquef for fhe parishoners was given af fhe Elks Club, Ridgewood, fhaf same evening. Af fhis banquef were assembled many nofable speakers, sfafe officials, church clignifaries, and prominenf laymen. Among fhese were A. Harry Moore, Governor of New Jersey, and His Excellency fhe Mosf Reverend VWlliam A. Griffin. Bishop Griffin in his dinner speech exfended his mosf sincere congrafulafions fo fhe parishoners and friends of fhe parish, while Governor Moore sfressed fhe imporfance of religion foday amid fhe ferror and sfrife in fhe world. On Tuesday, a High Requiem Mass was celebrafed for fhe deceased priesfs who had in any way parficipafed in fhe adminisfrafion of Sf. Luke's. Wednesday was indeed a happy clay. In addifion fo being fhe Feasf of Sf. l.uke's, and a holiday, if was also fhe day on which fhe Sacramenf of Confirmafion was conferred on 250 candidafes by Bishop Griffin. Thursday proved fo be a banner day for fhe sfudenfs of fhe school. Affer having affended a High Mass celebrafecl for fhem by Fafher Maloney, fhey were given a royal picnic on fhe school grounds by fheir pasfor. The evenfful Diamond Jubilee week was concluded on Friday morning wifh fhe celebrafion of a High Requiem Mass for fhe happy repose of fhe souls of fhe deceased laify of fhe parish. The greaf success of fhe Diamond Jubilee celebrafions was due in no small measure fo Fafher Maloney who planned fhe defails for fhis fesfal week and made if a fruly splendid and colossal affair. The wonderful fhings accomplished for fhe Church and Cafholic Educafion by Sf. Luke's in ifs sevenfy-five years of exisfence may be affribufed fo fhe generous sacrifices of fhe sainfly, zealous pasfors who guided ifs spirifual desfiny. Pindar as +irs+ pas+or. +he real developmen+ 0+ +he parish was rapid. ln Sepfember l92O Fa+her Pindar es+ablished +he +irs+ Ii++le school a+ Saddle River. The +0llowing year he erec+ed a small +rame building near +he Church. As +he enrollmen+ increased he added several addi+ions +0 +he original s+ruc+ure. ln I937 he saw his +0ndes+ dreams realized when +he beau+i+ul, modern building +0r +he grammar and'high schools was opened. ln +he years 0+ i+s exis+ence S+. Luke's School has made a splendid con+ribu+i0n +0 +he parish in +he excellen+ educa+ion impar+ed by +he Sis+ers 0+ S+. Joseph 0+ Newark. l+s pupils have won many honors and +he sch0las+ic repu+a+ion 0+ +he school is 0+ +he highes+.
