In the '39-'40 season, the Saint Luke High varsity basketball team won the section I title of the Catholic league, for the first time in the school's history. St. Luke's opened its season playing Sharpsville and Farrell, but dropping both games. The boys then started their conference games with a victory over St. Mary of the Mount. After defeating every other league opponent, the Irish bowed to St. Michael, but came back with a victory in at return game on their home court. St. Luke seemed headed for the championship, but were defeated by a strong St. Veronica team. However, the Irish ended in a tie for the lead with St. Michael, when St. Veronica was defeated by St, james. St. Luke's clinched the lead when they defeated St. Michael in a thrilling play- off game, at Central Catholic gytn, 27-25. A summary of the records show that St. Luke won 16 and lost 6. The team will lose four varsity members next year, when Story and Hoag, guardsg and Zeicheck and Columbus, forwards, graduate. This will leave Coach Lally with only two lettermen to work with, Swanson and Dinnen. The B squad will also have a good team. Likely to see varsity action next year are Coyle, VanBalen, and Kelsey. In the league play-off, St. I.uke's met the strong St, Basil quintet of Section II, who had taken the title in 1939. Their experienced team won the Hrst game, 42-go, with Unites starring for Basil with I7 points. They also won the second battle, 34-30, to clinch the series. 1939-tg lo BASK E'l'liAI.I. The season ended with the seniors and juniors tied, but the seniors won the play-off in a hard-fought battle. The sophomores finished third and the freshmen last. Boys' interclass basketball holds a dchnite place in the extra-curricular activi- ties ot the school. Class teams are an excellent source of material for future varsity teams. Vidal, GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL After an absence ol' 21 few years, St, Luke's were again represented in the Cath- olic Girls' Basketball League. The girls were organized but two years, but were a real threat for the championship. After winning eight straight games, the girls lost their first game to St. Rosalia, and later lost to Cathedral, putting them out of the race for lirst place honors in the Hrst half. In the second hall, the girls hit a slump, losing three of their First four. How- ever, they picked up, and, when they defeated St. Raphael, they were tied with Rosalia for first place, but lost to the strong Rosalia team. The girls are to he congratulated on the hue showing, in View of the fact that they are but recently reorganized. Miss Bauman will have difficulty building a team next year,as she will lose from the varsity, Irma Vidal and Gladys McCarty, at forward, and Dorothy Vidal at the guard position. Georgette Ferguson and Helen Zimmer-subshwill also graduate. The Varsity wishes to thank Madelyn Bauman, who gave much of her time and energy to the team, and made such a splendid job of it, and they also take this opportunity to wish the team the best ol' luck for the coming season. 1939-19,40 ls.tsKi1'l'1s.xt.I sc:HE1Jt'I.r1 St. Luke's .,...,,.. 25-St. Miehael's ,..... YVhat might be awaiting us, we did not know, but never- theless, we were determined to do our best. Nile had the highest intentionsg we were going to be the 'Kbest-class-ever. Our first thrust into the realm of entertaining was the Senior Breakfast, given to our departing brethren of the class of 1937. lVe passed our finals fmost of usj , and awaited the next year. 1937-38 When we came back in September of '37, we had dwindled some, but still had the largest class in the school. Our first theatrical adventure, the K'Pigskin Twins, was a marked success. The year was featured by the usual schedule of football games, and heavy basketball schedule. The success of the teams was partly due to members of our class, who were already blossoming forth. 1938-39 NVell! Wfelll Upperclassmen already. This was easier than we thought it would be! YVe could look down on the Sophoniores and Freshies . The stars of the basketball court and the gridiron were drawn chiefly from our ranks. Girls' basket- ball was introduced for the Hrst time in recent years, and most of the female stars came from the ranks of the class of '4o. Another innovation was class basketball. And just to show we could do everything, our team won every game they played in the league, winning the cup Qfilled with jelly beans!j. The class showed the boys their appreciation with a little impromptu banquet. Our hrst entertainment of the year was the .Iunior Christmas party. Then came the event of the year! The junior Proni! Benny Burtonls Orchestra helped make the affair a grand success. The juniors then began to help the Seniors with their Graduation, and this was followed by the usual Class Night, Graduation Mass, and hnally Commencement-which automatically left us Rulers of the School! fThe only way in which we feel we can do justice to the hnal year is by giving it a full page-which is exactly what we did-on tl1e following pagelj X'-?t Nga is la QM-5 be-J I 46 Xvednesday, September 6 193940 opened Monday, September ll .... ,....,... . ..,....,.
