Clan Prophecy Dear Diary: Ten long years will have passed before we get another glimpse of the Class of '48. As I, Sally Hodge, walk down busy Second Street headed toward the Ole Fort Pierce Hotel, l hear jerry Taylor yelling, Step right this way, and get your ticket to the latest Hollywood production, starring jo Ann Raulerson and Roy Mock in that latest musical comedy hit, 'Wits-appopin'.' Moseying on down by the News Tribune's new 25 story building, jeanne Arnold, editor of same, comes tearing out with stacks and stacks of old Green and White's. When she stops to catch her breath l ask her where she is going and, with that famous break in her voice, she answers, Haven't you heard? - That the Class of '48 is having their first class reunion at the 'Ole' Fort Pierce Hotel, now managed by Dick Lounsberry, who seems to have taken quite a liking to our fair city. jeanne asks if l'd like to ride on down with her and being a member of the class of '48 myself, l naturally accept her invitation. We drive up just as Donald Anderson, the doorman, helps Stanley and lo Bracken out of their ZZ cylinder Lincoln. lt's the first time in history that a married couple have been chosen as Mr. and Mrs. America and this honor has fallen to Stanley and jo. At the head of the receiving line is none other than Billy Don Church, now mayor of Fort Pierce, who points out among the guests many people familiar to me. Over in the center of the room, sur- rounded by people l haven't seen in years, I see the All-American Football Hero, Rabbit Prescott, who is busily signing autographs. To his left l notice Betty Griffin and Gene Hayes carrying on a hot conversation. Curious by human nature l wander over to see what is so interesting. Betty is leubbling over with the news that Caroline Briggs is on tour with a section of the Metropolitan Opera ompany. Our conversation is interrupted by Red Williams, Master of Ceremonies, who introduces Miss jean Hahn, world renowned radio singer. Miss Hahn sings the latest hit tune by the popular song writer, joe Baggett. We stroll into the-dining hall where the I947 junior-Senior Banquet was held just as Betty Briscoe, acting as hostess, announces that dinner is served. During the dinner we are entertained by the celebrities of the theatrical world. The first are Elton Cahow, Don Bryan and Edwin Brenner singing selections from a musical show hit by Mary Orr Riddick. The master of ceremonies, Vernon Williams, who has finally invented a bass horn that you can fold up and put in your pocket, announces that we will witness for the first time a new.dance, originated by Elinor and Allen, the couple who has danced around the world and back again. Those two slap- happy comedians, Charles Nero Griffis and Gerald Tex Cothes, then knock around a few cornies. Last, but not least jeanette Bates sings the words to Chop-Sticks while jeanette Mathis accompanies her on the piano. Looking around the tables I notice an outstanding thing, Shirley Breed has let her hair grow since '48 and is able to wear the latest thing-Hair Spun Dresses. Suddenly everyone is startled as Elwood Smith bursts out on the Cornet with a melody of familiar tunes including Pine Top Boogie and Mountain Dew. The Banquet being over, I decide to walk to the still standing Community Center. As I enter the building l see several of the prominent business people of the city. Among these are Dorothy Austin, owner of the Doll House, Sam Bennett, a criminal lawyer, whose partner is Eddie Denison, and leanne Cassens, Marjorie Davis, and Fay Culpepper, who own an exclusive dress shop. Since this is a special occasion Bob and Rue Lane have reopened The Alibi. They have just .. 551.4 QQ- ,....,- ...-
