LUCIE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Fort Pierce, Fla. pprecia tion To Miss Shutord we extend our apprecia- tion for all the time spent in making this year a success Without her we never could have made it past Stunt Nite. Her patience throughout this year will long be remem- bered. To Mrs. Scharfschwerdt goes our thanks for the hours she has spent helping us with everything from the annual to Class Day. In our hearts we will long remember and cherish her friendship and helpful guidance. ,fm Hx .Aan .fbeclicai lioii Yes, we the Senior Class of 1948 dedicate this Annual to our long loved General Science and Latin teacher, Mrs. Fern Z, Wilson, who in leaving this year will take with her our gratitude for the time and energy she has given in her sixteen years as a member of the faculty of Ft. Pierce High School. Without her kind understanding and steady manner these halls will not be the same. We who are graduating, as well as all who have known Mrs. Wilson, will keep her memory in our hearts. ' Q - A Clan .Hidlory j 1 In September, i944 the Class of '48 entered the immortal halls of Fort Pierce l-'ich Sclhool, des- tined to become the most stupendous class ever to graduate from there, We started off by electing Gene Hayes as president, james Leeper, vice-president, and Nancy jones, secretary-treasurer, with Mrs. Evans as our Sponsor. For Stunt Nite this year we presented Fashion Show starring those good-looking Freshmen boys. Although we didn't win a prize, we thought we had the best stunt, After struggling through exams we passed on to our Sophomore year. First, we elected Billy Don Church, president, Anna Scharfschwerdt, vice-president, Anita Martin, secretary, and joann Pagan, treasurer. Then we chose Aunt Kitty as our Sponsor. This year we had much better luck with Stunt Nite by winning first prize with our presentation Dreams of a jack-ass. By throwing some of the biggest dances ever witnessed in F. P. H. S., we were able to give the most fun-packed Sophomore-Senior picnic ever. Paying no attention to the rain that was bound to come, we went on to the Community Center for the big picnic and barn-dance. Again we struggled through exams and came out as juniors, looking down, disdainfully, on the underclassmen. A After a wonderful vacation we started off our junior year by re-electing Billy Don, president, Betty Priest, vice president, Vivian Smith, secretary, and Elton Cahow, treasurer. Miss Green, Mrs. Campbell, and Mrs, Evans were our Sponsors. Stunt Nite was wonderful-although we politely re- frained from taking a prize on our Stunt. Then untiringly we went to give the best junior Play ever given, Ever Since Eve. The money we attained from these two productions gave us plenty to put on the junior-Senior Banquet of all times. After filling up on that good ole Southern Fried Chicken, we danced and danced for hours. Then, of course, came final exams. Most of us squeezed through and we became High and Mighty seniors. 4 We began our last and best year by electing for president, lguess?l that's right, Billy Don Church, vice-president, Billy Young, secretary, Betty Griffin, and treasurer, jimmy joiner, our sponsors being Mrs. Scharfschwerdt and Miss Shuford. We elected Billy Don, Elton, and Red to Student Council. The first four months of our Senior year have been very successful. Although we didn't win any prize at Stunt Nite, we tried hard. We cannot tell about the last half of our Senior year, as it has not happened yet. Assuming that all 96 of us pass, in the early summer we will don our caps and gowns and march down the aisle. What a good class we have been through all these years? We shall remember the good and bad times and think of Fort Pierce High School as the best in the world. THE ANNUAL STAFF Harriet Williams Sally Hodge . N - i . . . LLL. - L s. . .. . .4 . . .V - Clan Prophecy Dear Diary: Ten long years will have passed before we get another glimpse of the Class of '48. As I, Sally Hodge, walk down busy Second Street headed toward the Ole Fort Pierce Hotel, l hear jerry Taylor yelling, Step right this way, and get your ticket to the latest Hollywood production, starring jo Ann Raulerson and Roy Mock in that latest musical comedy hit, 'Wits-appopin'.' Moseying on down by the News Tribune's new 25 story building, jeanne Arnold, editor of same, comes tearing out with stacks and stacks of old Green and White's. When she stops to catch her breath l ask her where she is going and, with that famous break in her voice, she answers, Haven't you heard? - That the Class of '48 is having their first class reunion at the 'Ole' Fort Pierce Hotel, now managed by Dick Lounsberry, who seems to have taken quite a liking to our fair city. jeanne asks if l'd like to ride on down with her and being a member of the class of '48 myself, l naturally accept her invitation. We drive up just as Donald Anderson, the doorman, helps Stanley and lo Bracken out of their ZZ cylinder Lincoln. lt's the first time in history that a married couple have been chosen as Mr. and Mrs. America and this honor has fallen to Stanley and jo. At the head of the receiving line is none other than Billy Don Church, now mayor of Fort Pierce, who points out among the guests many people familiar to me. Over in the center of the room, sur- rounded by people l haven't seen in years, I see the All-American Football Hero, Rabbit Prescott, who is busily signing autographs. To his left l notice Betty Griffin and Gene Hayes carrying on a hot conversation. Curious by human nature l wander over to see what is so interesting. Betty is leubbling over with the news that Caroline Briggs is on tour with a section of the Metropolitan Opera ompany. Our conversation is interrupted by Red Williams, Master of Ceremonies, who introduces Miss jean Hahn, world renowned radio singer. Miss Hahn sings the latest hit tune by the popular song writer, joe Baggett. We stroll into the-dining hall where the I947 junior-Senior Banquet was held just as Betty Briscoe, acting as hostess, announces that dinner is served. During the dinner we are entertained by the celebrities of the theatrical world. The first are Elton Cahow, Don Bryan and Edwin Brenner singing selections from a musical show hit by Mary Orr Riddick. The master of ceremonies, Vernon Williams, who has finally invented a bass horn that you can fold up and put in your pocket, announces that we will witness for the first time a new.dance, originated by Elinor and Allen, the couple who has danced around the world and back again. Those two slap- happy comedians, Charles Nero Griffis and Gerald Tex Cothes, then knock around a few cornies. Last, but not least jeanette Bates sings the words to Chop-Sticks while jeanette Mathis accompanies her on the piano. Looking around the tables I notice an outstanding thing, Shirley Breed has let her hair grow since '48 and is able to wear the latest thing-Hair Spun Dresses. Suddenly everyone is startled as Elwood Smith bursts out on the Cornet with a melody of familiar tunes including Pine Top Boogie and Mountain Dew. The Banquet being over, I decide to walk to the still standing Community Center. As I enter the building l see several of the prominent business people of the city. Among these are Dorothy Austin, owner of the Doll House, Sam Bennett, a criminal lawyer, whose partner is Eddie Denison, and leanne Cassens, Marjorie Davis, and Fay Culpepper, who own an exclusive dress shop. Since this is a special occasion Bob and Rue Lane have reopened The Alibi. They have just .. 551.4 QQ- ,....,- ...- W ,,,- L, 4, , ,S 47- - -We lags-ek --P --V -A - - invented a new soda, The Super-Duper-jet-Propelled-Atomic Soda. The first to try it out is Mary Claire Waters, who is just home from New York where she is a successful interior decorator. My attention is drawn to the door as a whole crowd of our former fellow classmates enter. The first person I see is the former joann Paganjnow Mrs, Bill Strickland, who is lending an ear to Mary Ellen O'Quinn's news about her farm in Georgia. Along with them comes Adrienne Thurmond, who is a famous missionary to China. Also in the crowd I see jo Carrera, who is making a success of her modeling career. Going on into the game room I see Herb Blum and Bob Eldridge, those world-famous ping-pong players, in the middle of a terrific game. Some of the miraculous things that have happened since we graduated are: AI Feinsod has finally made his trip around the world in a barrel, Lucille Waldron and Woodie Mae johnson are now Physical Ed. instructors at Fort Pierce High School, Bill Huie has flown over the United States twelve times in his own plane, jim Gordon is pitching for the Yankees, Kathleen Ezelle has finally found that Cer- tain someone g Paul Holley has just returned from a trip to the moon in a rocket, Wiley Gray has beef chosen America's Number One Pin-Up Boy, and that Harriet Williams is making a success of her writing. Spotting Marie Brunelle over in a corner I walk over to talk with her. She tells me that she has just written her own auto-biography and that it's a best seller. She also tells me that joyce Palmer is Superintendent of Nurses at the Fort Pierce Memorial Hospital, and Margaret Westbrook, Madge Pyles, and Catherine Haggard are also nurses at the same hospital. She says that Glenn Henderson is an All- American basketball player. Bidding Marie good-bye, I stroll over to where the orchestra is tuning up. For this special occasion, Lowell Thomas and his orchestra have consented to play. I walk over to tell him hello and he informs me that jimmie joiner now owns his own printing shop. He also says that Barbara Carter and Nancy jones are partners in a fashion designing business and that Willie jean Bevis is a private secretary to Moran McKenzie, who is now National Key Club Director. He relates that Dan Kelly is considered The Playboy of New York. Leaving Lowell, I stroll over to talk to Vivian Smith who is now a Power's Model. From her I learn that Euretha Black is' happily married and is the proud mother of twins. Vivian also says that Dewey Bourn now manages the Fort Pierce version of the Stork Club. I learn that Bobby Braswell has taken over the chain of Sunrise Grocery Stores and that Gladys Hartley manages Hartley's Restaurant, and also that Don PoweIl's presi- dent of the St. Lucie County Bank. My attention is attracted by another group coming in the door. Among these are joyce Cail, Fern Freer, and Hazel Curl, co-managers of the McCrory's Dime Store. Behind them comes Marion Cain, who is noted for the popcorn that she pops at the Sunrise Theater. Roger, now a famous radio announcer, comes in next. As Roger leaves, my attention is again drawn to the door. I see Betty Cato, who has just written a book on the principles of chemistry. Eleanor Childs comes in next. She now operates her own theater. jimmy Sallette, Lover Boy of I958, enters next. Then I see Dolly Rowe, who is mayor of White City. - ' Who could that be? Why it's john Hughes, principal of Fort Pierce High School. I stroll over to talk with him and learn that Anna now teaches Physical Ed at-guess where-Vero Beach High. He tells me that Carl Sapp has taken over Mrs. Cahow's position at our school. I learn that Gerard Van Eick and Donald Sykes run a used car business and that Loree Wilder and Crosby Anita Wright operate a florist shop. After talking with everyone about everyone I am convinced that the class of '48 is a huge success, as l knew it would be. A magnolia centerpiece with moss, tern, iris and jasmine was the decoration on each table. Placed in the flowers and moss were candles in crystal holders. At each place as favors were tiny bales of cotton and nut cups made in the design of southern belies. Highlighting the typical southern menu were fried chicken and peach pie ala mode served by twenty black-face sophomores. The program, furthering the Old South theme consisted of two solos, a reading, and a black-face tap numbert At nine o'clock the Prom began with music furnished by George Saleeby's Star Dustersf' The orchestra was enclosed in a picket fence, Ropes of moss and flowers were strung around the room and punch was served from a well surrounded by flowers and moss.
