On the morning of November 24, 1959, the Reverend Francis G. Be- noit, S.J., a member of the faculty of St. Louis University High School for the past thirty-two years, died in his sleep. The students and fac- ulty alike mourned his death - over four hundred students and alumni attending his funeral in the Backer Memorial Chapel two days later. Father Benoit was born in Holland in 1879. At the age of nineteen he entered the Jesuit novitiate in that country. Coming to the United States in 1903, he taught for tive years as a scholastic at St. Igna- tius College, Cleveland, Ohio. In 1911 he was ordained a priest of the Society of Jesus. In Memoriam 11 From 1914 to 1927 Father taught mathematics and classi- cal languages at St. Mary's College, St. Marys, Kansas. ln the later year Father came to St. Louis University High. For the next twenty-one years he was in the classroom as a teacher of mathematics, reli- gion, and Latin. In recent years Father served the student body as a confessor and student counselor. He was active in these capacities till the day of his death.
