As students of St. Louis University High School we quickly grow familiar with the many and splendid ideals which are the heart and soul of our school, and the guiding spirit of everything we would nobly achieve. Ideals are a call to courage, for ideals are born of sacrifice. Spending themselves in cheerful and un- heralded sacrifice for us, Brothers Brudny and Thornton have labored at Backer for a com' hined total of eighteen years. Their work for the school is in truth work for us. In sincere gratitude we proudly dedicate this volume of the Dauphin to them. Rev Gregory H Icxcobsmeyer SI gm, f,g,:5g,l 5, Q V vw from-...Q Rev. Mention Captain '52 Team St. Louis, 65 Roosevelt, 6. Outweighed but not out-fought, the Blue- White battled the Goliaths from the south side to a well-earned deadlock. ln preseason pick- ings the Roughriders were selected to top the Public League, but the Backermen put their defensive prowess to good use as they rushed the much heavier Rider line off its feet. Roose- velt drew first blood when a lineman picked up Les Hohl's blocked punt and galloped un- molested over the goal. The Bills tallied in the second quarter when Hohl, already having two long touchdown dashes called back, finally snake-hipped his way to pay dirt from the three-yard stripe. Eighty-eight St. Louis, 6: Beaumont, l3. All hopes of avenging the District game of last year were toppled when the Bills were stung twice in the first half by a powerful jackets' backfield. Dan Crimmins imparted a ray of sunshine on the Backer fans in what was otherwise a very gloomy day. ln the third quarter the junior streak spun around left end and started on a junket which ended at the goal line, 65 yards away. Paul Thomann, stellar linebacker, had set up the play by run- ning an interception pass to the Bills' 35. Mis- cues played an important part in the game. Fumbles and interceptions were happening so fast that neither team had time to start any substantial drives of any kind. This game saw a couple of the many injuries that were to plague the Bills this season. St. Louis, 71 Decatur, 13. Two long runs trampled the Dauphins in their first road game of the season when they matched running attacks with the spirited Reds from Illinois. The contest was just under way when the Reds' left end scooted eighty-five yards for the first marker. The Bills' running attack was stifled by a solid wall of crimson, so quarterback Hohl went to the air. Dan Crirnmins ate up large parts of opposing turf as he caught three of Hohl's spirals. The last was good for a touchdown from twenty yards out. Late in the second quarter, Simroth took off through the Billiken secondary for a fifty- yard sprint which sewed up the game. The Bills' last ditch attempt was nullified by a pass interception. St. Louis, 35: St. Mary's, 7. Making the first defense of their Prep League diadem, the junior Bills all but buried the Green Dragons from the Southside. The Dau- phins' two burly fullbacks, Bill Hebron and Steve Sweetin, were just too much for the Dragons' forward wall to stop. The fans had just gotten seated when the first part of the Backer Bulldozers, Hebron, skipped undis- turbed into the end zone from a short distance out. ln the second quarter, Hebron picked a hole in the line and dashed to another t.d. Dan Crimmins had set up the play by snatch- ing up a fumbled handoff and driving to the one-yard line. Towards the end of the second quarter, sub-quarterback Dick Ossenfort raced 65 yards up the middle, following a hole made by guard Art Demmas. Crimmins and Sweetin piloted drives to the goal in the second half. The former galloped ten, the latter twenty yards. The Borckermen stood determined crgoinst the much heovier Wildcot line crll through the first hcrlf, when both sides did little else but punt. But DeAndreis punted once too often. Lote in the second quorter the Wild- cots kicked into cr stiff wind. The pigskin cor- ried ten yoirds to the Wildcots' thirty-seven yczrd line, ot which the Bills took possession. Finding the Wildcot line not yielding enough yordoge to the Billiken bcrcks, Co-coptorin Hohl pitched to end Donny King, who trotted the needed distcrnce for the morker thcrt wcrs to sew up the contest. The some dogged couroge thot corried the Bills from the doldrums of mediocrity crt the sec1son's stcrrt to the spec- toculdr heights they now commonded, proved itself crgoin in the second hcrlf. LOUIS l3: SOUTHWEST l2 The dark clouds which overhung Francis Field all through the Thanksgiving Day classic seemed suddenly to disappear as the seconds of the clock stubbornly ticked off a Billiken victory. Then all at once it was true and bed- lam broke looseg the Dcruphins, a team which had to fight an uphill battle all year, had clashed with the vaunted Steers from South- west and conquered. The seemingly indestruc- tible passing attack of Southwest boomeranged and came back to haunt them in the form of passes hurled by brainy Les Hohl. All- American Art Demmas and Rocky Brennan dug their mud cleats into Francis Field to stage a brilliant blocking and tackling rodeo with the Steers. Like the champions they were, the two schools locked horns in a fierce battle to win. The first half was fought on an even keel on a sea of mud until Hohl pulled, from his bag of tricks, the feared reverse, the play that scored repeatedly for the Bills all through the season. Halfback Dan Crimmins was the last man to receive the pigskin on this crafty maneuver and the speedy back spun through the line, out- distanced the linebackers, and raced forty- seven yards before he was pulled down just three yards short of the Steer's goal. But reli- able Les Hohl brought the fans to their feet when he slipped past the outstretched arms of the enemy and into the end zone for the first marker of the contest. Bob Massey's placement went wide. Bob Buck scored for Southwest lust before the end of the half. This didn't stop the determined Bills, for they grabbed the second half kickoff and quickly scored a touchdown before they relinquished control of the ball. Again it was Wingback Crimmins who administered the telling blow. This time he scampered from the forty-seven to the twenty-seven to put the Bills in touchdown territory. Several plays later Hohl drove over for his second tally. Hohl now decided to use the play that was to decide the District champion- ship, the strategy that backfield coach Ed Dono- hue outlined in the locker room at half time. The team lined up as usual for the extra-point attempt with Hohl down on one knee, preparatory to holding the ball for Bob Massey's accustomed boot. But when the ball was snapped, Hohl sprang up, caught the ball, and shot a spiral to lanky end Tom Sullivan, who hugged the leather that was to mean victory. Billiken supremacy ebbed only once in the few minutes that remained. Buck, sidestepping beautifully, raced forty yards to get as far as the Billiken one-yard line Where Bill Hebron pulled him down. A moment later he tallied his second touchdown which put Southwest be- hind by only one point. The Bills stubbornly protected their one point advantage the last few seconds and preserved their first District Game victory in five tries since they won in l947. 1x't'neft,.0n.1 64144 FLUITL1 Row 11. 'MURAL FOOTBALL 'MURAL BASKETBALL Launching the annual intra-mural encounters in the usual fashion, the various classes welded together six stalwart members to compete in the perennial touch-football clashes. From these twenty-four squads only two emerged victorious. After sneaking by 4E in a photo- finish, 4F crashed headlong into trouble against a fiery BB contingent, but finally warded them off for Senior Division laurels. 2B also had a rough time in Sophomore surroundings, but completely overwhelmed the rather inexperi- enced Frosh of IB. Fr. T Kelly, S.I, had Tony Miceli as his assistant for scheduling and refereeing games. One Hundred Ten With the initial center-jump earlier than usual, the various 'mural baslceteers had a long and perilous ascent to the pinnacle of the basketball division. Twenty contingents fell by the wayside before the accuracy and reach of 4F, 3D, ZF, and ID. ln the senior division an unlooked-for runaway took place as the Iuniors, a much smaller quintet, continually cleared the backboards before the befuddled eyes of the towering Seniors as they romped to two straight victories. A surprising Fresh- man team rose to unexpected heights after falling before a well-organized Sophomore squad in the primary contest. Tying and then sneaking by the erring sophs, the freshmen finally succumbed to their elders in a hair- raising finale. Outstanding diamond men were pitchers Mike Martin, Dick Kloster- man, and Don Buhl. Exceptional outfielders were Sassin, Sullivan, and Lonigro. Catchers Mager, Merideth, and Hilton did a fine job. Tom Bauch on tirst base, Taylor on second, Gorski on third helped to make a tight infield.
