Out of 125 beginners, 80 boys were received into the Sodality at the Solemn Reception on April 25. During the year candidates in the Freshman group, moderated by Fr. George Toruno, Sl., and Mr. William Doran, SJ., deepened their spiritual lives during the two days oi recollec- tion which they had during the year, by tridua, novenas, and spiritual reading. Food drives for the poor at Christmas and Easter, donation to the regular mission collections, and dona- tion of Catholic literature to hospitals and missions assisted them in developing their vir' tue of charity. They planned visits to their homes of the Pilgrim Virgin of Fatima and a pilgrimage to the tour churches assigned in St. Louis to gain the Holy Year indulgences. Varshy FoothaH The second coaching change in as many years proved to be just as successful for the lunior Billikens as the previous one did when new head coach C. l. Taylor took the Blue and White through one of the greatest football seasons of all time at St. Louis U. High. An eight game winning streak was snapped by Central Catholic, who, fortunately, had dropped out of the Prep League and thus enabled the Dauphins to take the crown for the fifth straight time, but they didn't have to take a back seat to anyone with their record of eight wins and two losses, the other defeat coming in the District game. As usual the Bills placed several players on the local All-District teams, George Shaffrey, Syl Lutkewitte, Art Demmas, and Bobby Bran- gle, and had a flock of All-Prep selections, ine cluding Demmas, Lutkewitte, Shaffrey, Pete Hummel, and lohn Dwyer. ST. LOUIS, 7: SOUTHWEST, 6. Usually the opening game of anybody's football season is more or less a breather, a tune-up for the more strenuous games to come. The lunior Billikens and coach Taylor were on the spot from the initial kick-off how- ever as they met one of the pre-season favo- rites for the Public League title in the Long- horns, and had to go all out to annex the victory. The Dauphins played a brilliant de- fensive game after scoring in the first five minutes of the first quarter, when Bobby Bran- gle went over from the one yard line and George Shaffrey trotted across for the extra point. Although they had very few opportuni- ties to display their wares during the past year, the club seized every opportunity to prove to all within earshot that their renditions of Hlune ls Bustin' Out All Over, You'll Never Walk Alone, Clclahonia, by Bodgers and Hammerstein, and Night and Day, by Cole Porter, were the best to be heard. After proving this at the Winter Concert, they re- tired to the obscurity of the Movie Hall to perfect The Wiffenpoof Song, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Stout-Hearted Men, and With a Song in My Heart, for the equally successful Spring Concert.
