Hubert Pryde, played by Whealen, is a rather stupid individual who was duped into buying the Ramshackle Inn on the pretext that it's a veritable gold mine. Realizing his mistake too latg Hubert is immediately involved in the meshes of the Black Market racketeers. All ends well, however, when the ring is smashed, its leaders apprehended and finally brought to justice. The stage crew for Ramshackle Inn was led by Pete Messineo, McLaran Sawyer, and Bob Vonder- haar. It also included Ray Lonergan, joe Conlon, and Gene Martens. Mr. Richard Smith, SJ., was respon- sible for the sound effects, and Bob Vonderhaar for the lighting. For their second major presentation of the year, the Guild chose a delightful little comedy-farce, by Mr. Robert J. Imbs, SJ., called French Omelet. The play, a one-act drama, is a hilarious satire on Holly- wood Cast in leading roles were Fred Wehking ack Kersting and Don Connolly The supporting cast included oe Conlon jack Buhr Bill Riley Dave Dempsey Ray Lonergan Don Bauman and Frank Cabrilliac Fr Meehan produced and directed Mr Keeler assisted and james Nauert helped out back stage with makeup etc Both plays received favorable notices from the critics Back Hx i fo o Flrt R llw Nic all in Dr Page Sixty Seven . , J , . The Bills' only losses came as a powerful Rough Rider eleven administered a 25-7 drubbing, and a fateful pass gave St. Marys a victory in the last quarter. However, the men of Coach George Hasser had little trouble in beating the other teams in the league. racking up two shutouts and two verdicts by twelve-point margins. All-District End Bob Rooney. who acted as a fifth backfield man and divided the booting assignments with tackle Don Cole, held a big lead in the scoring race at the end of the season with a total of 52 points. Fullback and Captain Al Hannibal and quarterback jack Shea tied for second place with 2-i points apiece. At the halfback positions speedy Alack VC'ind and shifty Tom Holden proved invaluable in many of the .Iunior Bill touchdown marches. Although somewhat shaky in the first few encounters. the Dauphin line had sharpened into a sturdy. charging wall by the season final. Center Bob Lyng. one of the Bills' most skillful defense artists and Guard john McNay were the mainstays of the forward wall with john Mcllinty. Don Mclntyre. and Don Cole holding down the tackle positions. -lerry Hogg and .lay Shapley at guards. and Don Meiners and Tom Tombridge alternating at right end completed the line. Lettermen returning for another year include: Bob Beetz. Bob Bogdan, Tony Correnti. Marty Dooley. Bill Flynn. ,Iohn Meara. Bob Rooney. Mike Schulter. jay Shapley. Tom XVinkler. and Pete XY'ebbe. Page Sei-nity-Sir Ri ST. LOUIS 31 e BEAUMONT 13 The Junior Bills made St. Louis fans stand up and take notice in their first game with their arch rivals, the Blue- jackets of Beaumont. jack Shea. jack Wind, and Bob Rooney stood out in the Bills' attack that netted a total of five touch- downs. After stopping a surging jacket attack several times in the first quarter, jack Wind and Al Hannibal tallied for the Bills and the score at the half had the Hassermen lead- ing l9-0. Numerous fumbles and pass interceptions stopped the jackets many times when paydirt was near and set the stage for several Jr. Bill touchdown marches. ln the fourth quarter after a Beaumont pass had been intercepted by Tom Holden, Bob Rooney raced -'io yards for the Bills' last touchdown. The Jackets scored twice in the final frame for their only points of the evening. ST. LOUIS 7 f ROOSEVELT 25 The Bills ended a victory string of five straight over the Rough Riders of Roosevelt in their second game of the season as a hard driving line and single-wing ran rampant through the Bills' defense. Although the Bills led momentarily in the first quarter, the Riders quickly tallied twice in the first and once in the second for a two-touchdown lead at the half. jack Wind, star of the previous game. suffered a broken nose in the first and was removed from the game. This incident to- gether with the Riders' evasive lead combined to hold the Billiken offense down to a trot. Herb Hacker of the Rough Riders scored midway in the third quarter for the last score of the game, and the Hasser- men had suffered their only heavy loss of the season. Page Seventy-Seren 'Y l J J 1 aff' Z Q --A W g , PQQ JOHN McNAY BOB LYNG ST. LOUIS 12 3 SOUTHWEST 6 Two quick first-quarter touchdowns and a good. steady defense gave the Bills their second victory of the season over the Southwest Longhorns. After St. Louis recovered a Southwest fumble on the kickoff, Bob Rooney carried the ball 45 yards from the Southwest 47 to the 2, from where a Shea-to-Holden pass gave the Bills their first touchdown. After a mild surge of the Longhorns was stopped on the Bills' 20-yard line, the Hasser- men scored once again as Shea flipped a short pass to Don Meiners who lateralled to Rooney on the St. Louis 40. Rooney then galloped 60 yards for their last six points of the night. The Steers' only score came towards the end of the first half. when Byers scored on a plunge from the three-yard line. The second half was mainly a succession of punts by both teams with the Longhorns coming within the Bills' thirty-yard line on three occasions only to lose the ball on downs. ST. LOUIS 20 ee McBRIDE 6 The Bills took their first Prep League contest in the next game. Scoring I5 points in the first quarter for the margin of victory over the Colonnaders. Bob Rooney and .lack Shea pro- vided the attack in the opening minutes of play as a 24-yard run by Bob Rooney and a short pass by jack Shea set the stage for XVind's plunge from the three, Bob Rooney again scored towards the end of the period with a 77-yard scamper and the Bills maintained a I3-7 lead. McBride staved off two Dauphin scoring threats in the second quarter as the Bills twice penetrated to the McBride 5-yard line without scoring, A Sl-yard run by Tom Holden and a pass from End Tombridge to End Rooney gave the Bills their last score of the evening early in the third quarter, Page Sctenfy-Eigllzf JERRY HOGG DON McINTYRE DON MEINERS ST. LOUIS 7 - ST. MARY'S 12 A disheartening defeat and a lost chance for undisputed possession of first place in the Prep League fell into the laps of the junior Bills in the second loop game of the season. An old nemesis to the Hassermen, Corky Bellers, romped over the goal line twice for the Dragons, once in the first quarter and again in the fourth quarter to squelch a Bill lead. After the Dragons had held a 6-point lead for two quarters, Al Hannibal put the Bills back into the game as he intercepted a pass on his own fifteen-yard line and scampered down the sidelines for an eighty-five-yard touchdown run. Rooney converted and the Bills led momentarily. The deciding touchdown came in the last frame as a last down Dragon pass through two junior Bill safety men dropped into the hands of a South Side end on the 15-yard line. ST. LOUIS 19 - CENTRAL CATHOLIC 0 The first of two straight shutout victories was posted in the next contest against an hitherto undefeated Central Catholic squad with the Bills completing six out of seven passes, three of which they used to score their three touchdowns. The Bills' strategy of building their attack around their passing depart- ment because of the muddy field proved a smart move as long aerials by jack Shea and Bob Rooney took the place of their usual ground attack. A 50-yard pass from Shea was gathered in by Rooney on the 40-yard stripe and Rooney scampered 40 yards for the Bills' first touchdown. Then, after the Pioneers had lost the ball on the Bills' 40-yard line, Shea again connected with Rooney on the 5-yard stripe for their second six points. Towards the end of the period Bob Rooney, playing in a turnabout role, flipped a pass to Don Meiners for the last score of the afternoon, Page Seventy-Nine i i 1. - , I may S ai ' -ffiivu' - ,, i .-A TOM TOMBRIDGE '1 If ST. As the sun sets on the 1947 basketball season and we wait patiently for the dawning of another hardwood year, we glance back at the passing season and see a record that does not quite parallel previ- ous Midget achievements but is still one to be proud of. With sixteen victories and seven setbacks the Mites finished off a successful season under the coaching of Fr. Thomas Kelly. and Mr. Thomas Hanley. Sal. Games were played every Saturday against grade school teams. Athletic Clubs. and Sophomore teams. The latter quintets defeated the Mites frequently and were the cause of the blemish on a good record.
