Bl, Football I , , I . -uk i R 1. I Hof Autumn on the Dauphin Campus - Football Ap,'cnti,i self: Ruma, Hahn and lones took care of the rest. Webster's well-drilled team was unde- feated until it walked into the Dauphin camp. Brady and Inkley carried the ball over the stripe in the first half: Hahn in the second stanza, Webster turned in a lone tally in the third period but never threat- ened after that. St. Genevieve came to St. Louis only to fall before the rushing Dauphins. Purcell, Ryan. Ellis and Barry shone on the Blue and White line, Two passes from Hahn to Iones enabled the latter to knife through for two tallies. In the South Side games the HB shock troopers were given an occasion to show their wares and many new stars appeared. Peterman, a discovery in this game, ran the Dauphins touchdowns over the tape. lclabenicht, Erker, Sinclair, Rohman and Lander played the game of their lives, The hitherto undefeated C. B. C. team was worthy competition for the Backer boys. There was splendid running by Eberle. Hahn, Cummings, Peterman and Gaskill, and fine tackling by Ruma. The St. lohn's game was colorless and ended with a colorless score, Only Dau- phin second stringers were used. and they were not quite strong enough to score on the varsity opposition. McBride was hardly opposition for the speedy Backerites who ran roughshod over them in the final home appearance of the season. The last game was played in historic old St. Genevieve. The enemy scored on a pass to win. Leiweke, Ruma and Rohman played good defensive hall. So with virtually green ma- terial Coach Stanton had to try to repeat his magic of making something out of nothing. The schedule and scores tell you the story. In spite of setbacks on account of the illness of key players of the team at critical times, the aggregation battled for and won the highest honors in this district. For by defeating an ever formidable rival, C. B. C. in the district tournament final, the Dau- phins won the District Championship, All ten men of the squad were rather equal in abilityg it was for that reason a team of team men. Individuals did not stand out: the whole team did, and it did this best when the odds were against it. Never before was the spirit of a great coach reflected so amazingly and accur- ately in his team-a dogged, persevering, never-say-die spirit. It would be unfair to single out any par- ticular player of this fine team. You have their names under the picture: when you look at the picture you see a great team made up of mutually superior players. IUNIOR-VARSITY BASKETBALL Ten slashing victories, two defeats! 283 points scored against 183 of the opposi- tion! These cold figures-which mean plenty as basketball figures go-tell only half the story of the I-V's sensational play. Both defeats were at the hands of sea- soned senior varsity outfits on their own home courts. The institution of a Iunior Varsity is the ten-year old wish of Coach Tom Stanton realized. Taking six likelv sophomores and a freshman, he was able to whip them, by daily drill against the varsity, into a smart, scrappy, high-geared combination. Their natural competitors. ordinary B squads. provided little more than moderate workouts, with the result that stiffer opposition was sought in the varsity teams of the county schools. The I-V's outpointed Brentwood varsity on Eberle's charity toss with seconds to qo. Ienning's high scoring combination barely nosed out the Blue-Whiters, 38-34. The peak of the season was reached when Central Catholic went home defeated for the first time in 21 starts, after l'lahn's free throw swished through the basket to break an overtime 20-20 deadlock. V, Eberle led the scorers with 73 points: Captain Hahn was next with 55, trailed by Saey with 52. Unless we miss, this aggre- gation will make basketball history the next two years. MIDGET BASKETBALL The Midgets turned in a great season, turning ll victories out of 13 starts. Coach Staab's little quintet made a fine impres- sion at every appearance with speed, nice ball handling and free scoring style. Page Eighty-eight Captain Kavanaugh led the scoring with the amazing total of 93 points for 12 games. Next to Eberle's all-round play, Maher's clever work at guard was out- standing. The program, chuck- full of activity through the year, included: freshman football league, fall and spring indoor leagues, noonday basketball leagues, noonday soccer leagues. table tennis and indoor-tennis tournaments. The freshman football league met with huge success. Five fully equipped teams played an elimination round, with the out- fit captained by Tom Weiler winning. Contemporaneous with the football season, the fall noonday indoor league swung into action. Sophomore B, captained by Sam Marrone, captured the title with an unde- feated schedule. Iunior D and Freshman D, captained by Harry Dunn and Harry Kehoe respectively, held a slashing play- off for the soccer title: scores by lim O'Neal and Dunn caused the leagues to end in a deadlock.
