The Continuing Responsibilities Imposed by the Advances of Science on This Generation I should like particularly to emphasize that our dedica- tory celebration today aims to highlight one vitally important fact: all of us, in one way or another, share in the continuing responsibility which the advances of science impose on this generation. Within the University, the faculty in the engineering and science departments must recognize their solemn ob- ligation to utilize these facilities to their maximum ef- fectiveness in their efforts to discover and propagate and conserve the knowledge which is the precious commodity with which their profession is concerned. Our students must recognize that, as never before, theirs is a moral obligation to apply their God-given talents to the pursuit of scientific competence so that the threat of scientific illiteracy in our day may be averted. This community and especially its business and In- dustrial leaders must reaffirm their responsibility to guar- antee that the manpower pool of scientific ability, which will probably always be in short supply, is drawn upon with intelligent efficiency. Moreover, all of our citizens, and especially those who have been blessed with a generous share of this world ' s goods, must accept the responsibility of helping to bear the extremely heavy financial costs of superior scientific research and education. SP ? «- -- FATHER REINERT addressing guests at the dedication ceremonies in the Edwin C. Koenig Plaza.
