FATHER REINERT'S MESSAGE The Departments of Instruction Fulfill the University's Mission of Service The 1965 Archive, through its theme, expresses dramatica'lly the character of Saint Louis University as a private institution devoted to public service. The em- phasis placed on the Departments of Instruction portrays the way in which the Uni- versity best fulfills its mission of service, for though the University serves the com- munity and the nation in many ways, all of its contributions are determined by the breadth and quality of its educational programs and the men and women who car- ry them out. The graduating seniors pictured in this year's Archive ioin a body of some 30,000 alumni, in every part of the country and the world, who are making their own individual contributions to society. Saint Louis University is proud of these alum- ni and the part the University played in their' development as responsible, intelligent, and effective citizens. The contributions that Saint Louis University makes to society through its alumni are easily measured. For example, one out of every three physicians in Greater St. Louis is a graduate of the School of Medicine, one out of every two den- tists is a graduate of the School of Dentistry, graduates of the School of Nursing and Health Services are on the staff of every hospital and health service program in the community, Similar parallels can be drawn between all of the other schools and colleges of the University and virtually every aspect of the community-between the vast, com- plex needs ofthe community and the thousands of alumni who teach in its schools, conduct its business and financial affairs, seek solutions for its social problems, help preserve the rule of law, advance its technological resources, contribute to its spiritual, cultural, and family life. ln pursuing its dedication to public service, Saint Louis University also recog- nizes that it must not only keep abreast of the needs of the community and the nation but that it must exercise leadership in anticipating and planning for the needs of the future. The trends of the sixties-the growth of automation, the ex- panding population, the revolution in.technology, the increasing percentage of high- school graduates going into college, the continuing increase in life expectancy and the many opportunities for significant advances in the health field, the many new avenues of intellectual inquiry, and the enlarging inter-dependencies be- tween the urban university and the community it serves-all require great vision on the part of our universities. Saint Louis University, in keeping with its long tra- dition of service, has accepted the responsibilities that educational leadership de- mands, and has set out on a course that will ensure its future contributions to the community and the nation. Faithfully yours, WAQ. Paul C. Reinert, S.J. President
