.N if Q The double burden of ministering to the needs of the parish and maintaining the discipline of St. Louis College was stubbornly borne by Father Neil and his assistants until the end of the 1826-1827 session, when it was decided to close the doors of the institution. Then, on the second day of November, 1829, it was reopened by the Jesuits in a new building fpictured abovel which they built on Washington Avenue at Ninth Street-- in the opinion of the inhabitants there was no more suitable spot for a college. Father Peter Verhaegan, S.J., formally welcomed the students--one hundred and fifty strong, lads whose names were to become rich in the historical lore of the city and the West. 6.2 PETER VERHAEGAN, SJ. Despite his meager resources, the first Presi- dent hopefully set about introducing the standards of excellence traditional in Jesuit colleges. Father Verhaegan's hope of giving the best tools of scholarship to his students would seem to be amply realized today in the libraries and laboratories of St. Louis University. But the Very Reverend Paul C. Reinert, S.J., pictured here by the fabulous Pius XII Memorial library, the twenty-ninth president and presently in his sixteenth year of office, is possessed of the same concern for higher learning and is restless to move the University ahead in rapport with its great tradition. Father Reinert Announces New Annual Awards Alumni Merit Aworclees The Bicentennial of the City of St. Louis is a time for reflection on the proud traditions that have inspired its cultural, social, and physical growth. St. Louis University pays tribute to these traditions, in establishing The Spirit of St. Louis Award, which will be conferred annually, beginning with the Bicentennial year, on a prominent American who exemplifies the pioneering spirit that has motivated so much of the city's progress. The University has been an integral part of these traditions for almost three fourths of the city's life and is proud of its own pioneering achievements in the field of higher education. The City and the University have walked many paths together, and today, we are deter- mined to share in the march of urban progress. The Spirit of St. Louis combines the vision and courage of its people, and the University takes pride in the fact that so many of her alumni and faculty have helped shape the City's past and planned its future. I urge everyone associated with St. Louis University--- faculty and students, alumni and friends---to ioin in the Bicentennial celebration, not only to glory in the City's achievements, but in a spirit of rededication to the ful- fillment of its promise.
