Ritter, Archbishop of Saint Louis, was to be elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals by the reigning Sovereign Pontiff, Pope John XXIII. The people of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis had special reason for re- joicing - they were being honored for the second time through this ecclesiastical elevation, and were to experience for the first time the actual residency of a reigning prelate of such rank. John Cardinal Glennon, the Archdiocese's first Cardinal, died after receiving the Red Hat in 1946. At that time Arch- bishop Ritter, then administrator of the Diocese of Indianapolis, was appointed by Rome as the Ordinary of the historic Saint Louis Archdiocese. Shortly after his assignment to Saint Louis, Cardinal Ritter received the pallium and was made an Assistant at the Pontifical Throne. His election as a member of the Sacred College was a climax to an eventful career of one of America's foremost Churchmen, a career that had begun in 1917 with his ordination, and progressed in 1934 with his ap- pointment to the Bishorpric of Indianapolis. Cardinal Ritter distinguished himself in many fields and activities, particularly with regard to social iustice and charity. He is recognized far beyond the United States as an undaunted champion of racial minorities. He had advanced the cause of refugee settlement in the United States. And he has given ardent support to Saint Louis University and the Jesuits of the Missouri Province. For his contributions to humanity, for his dedicated assistance to the University, for his promotion of brotherhood, we salute Joseph Cardinal Ritter.
