l ... REV. ALPHONSE M. SCHVVITALLA, SJ. Dean E11Le1'zft-Ms, School of Medic-ivie eibecbca fion It is to the Rev. Alphonse M. Schwitalla, S.J., dean emeritus of the Medical School, that we dedicate this 1950 edition of the Archive. Father Schwitalla's resignation as dean was announced in December of 1948, shortly after he had completed his twenty-iirst year as head of the school. During his long career, he established an international reputation in the field of medical education. Just before he resigned, he became the iirst layman to receive the American Medical Association's award for distinguished service. The new wing of the Medical Building, formally opened not long afterward, was named SCHWITALLA HALL in his honor. The retired dean is now devoting his attention to writing in the iields of nursing and medical education as well as hospital administration. Father Schwitalla will celebrate his golden jubilee in the Jesuit order on July 25. He re- ceived his A.B. from the University in 1915 and his M.A. the following year. In 1915, he was or- dained a Roman Catholic Priest. Except for a brief period of study away from St. Louis, Father Schwitalla has spent his entire career with the University. flrlgi 'ffl'
