l ... REV. ALPHONSE M. SCHVVITALLA, SJ. Dean E11Le1'zft-Ms, School of Medic-ivie eibecbca fion It is to the Rev. Alphonse M. Schwitalla, S.J., dean emeritus of the Medical School, that we dedicate this 1950 edition of the Archive. Father Schwitalla's resignation as dean was announced in December of 1948, shortly after he had completed his twenty-iirst year as head of the school. During his long career, he established an international reputation in the field of medical education. Just before he resigned, he became the iirst layman to receive the American Medical Association's award for distinguished service. The new wing of the Medical Building, formally opened not long afterward, was named SCHWITALLA HALL in his honor. The retired dean is now devoting his attention to writing in the iields of nursing and medical education as well as hospital administration. Father Schwitalla will celebrate his golden jubilee in the Jesuit order on July 25. He re- ceived his A.B. from the University in 1915 and his M.A. the following year. In 1915, he was or- dained a Roman Catholic Priest. Except for a brief period of study away from St. Louis, Father Schwitalla has spent his entire career with the University. flrlgi 'ffl'

0I QlfU0lf' Faced with increasing difficulties in production and finances, the thirty-third edition of the Archive strug- gled behind the mask of complacency to bring to the students of St. Louis University a journal of the one hundred and thirty-second academic year. The assessing of senior students for the purchase of the book was a major factor in the debt-free production of this year's Archive. Small advertising revenue and the little response by under-classmen toward advance purchase of the book put a strain on the budget. This strain is evidenced by the size of the journal. Financial difficulties were not the only headaches thrust upon the staff. Each one of the four main sections of the book was delayed by at least one major obstacle. Communications with New York during the Christmas mailing rush in an effort to locate a number of missing senior portraits put the annual's largest section more than six weeks behind and diverted much time and attention of the editors. The feature division was several times dropped and restored, 'according to the book's changing financial outlook. There were willing workers, but not enough of them. Time was shortrwith stacks of Work to be done. This, then, is the background of the product turned out by a short-handed yearbook staff. Though the book is smaller than its predecessor, its contents include about the same number of seniors, more organizations, more informal pictures and as many pages of sports as last year. We feel that you will be pleased with the fruit of our labor. - The Editors
