DE DD IMPLICITY is the keynote of modernity. And it is with simplicity that we have endeavored to present this book to you. We believe that there is a certain beauty in that which is stripped of superfluities. For that reason, therefore, and to be becoming to the present era of economy, much of the display and elaborateness that has marked previous books has been dispensed with to achieve the simple. We hope that it is not too plain, at the same time believing in the attractiveness of that chaste plainness. In future years when these pages bring back memories of student conquests, those memories will be unadorned with illustrations and descriptions that look so old that one will start with astonishment at the rapid progress of years. Please have a soft spot in your heart, too, for the sorrow that has been ours in bringing this to you.
